Azusa Library :: Grassroots ESL Presented at State Conference

Grassroots ESL Presented at State Conference
Azusa Library
Literacy Update: Nov/Dec 2014

City Librarian Reed Strege and Adult Literacy Coordinator Cathay Reta traveled to Oakland, California to present a session on Azusa’s Grassroots ESL Program at the 2014 California Library Association Conference on November 8.  The session was well-received by approximately 40 library professionals who are interested in meeting the English needs of English Language Learners in their communities.  Attendees were especially interested in the unique community partnership model developed by Grassroots ESL. A few people have already followed up with requests for more information about it.

Another highlight of the presentation was the snapshot of student statistics from the first full year.  From October 2013 to October 2014, 130 students received 3064 hours of instruction from 28 volunteer tutors.  Since the program seeks to not only teach English to non-English speakers, but to also encourage them to practice English outside of tutoring sessions, we also collected information from students regarding how many English-speaking people they know and how often they speak English, along with their education levels and number of years living in the United States.

Ventura Co Library :: Discovering Joys of Reading

Discovering joys of reading
Ventura County Star: 10.10.2014 by Anne Kallas

It required some stealth, but Marie Martinez, 50, of Oak View, learned a few tricks over the years to hide her secret: She couldn’t read.

“I’d sit in the break room and wait for someone to go to the bulletin board. Then I’d ask them to read me what it said. I’d always say I was too busy eating and didn’t have time,” Martinez said. “When the kids wanted me to help them with homework, I’d tell them I was too busy cleaning or cooking.”

Now, her secret is out. But that’s OK, she said, because she’s doing something about it, and she wants others to know there’s no shame in seeking help.

Martinez goes on Wednesday afternoons to the Buena High School library in Ventura, where tutor Valerie Stachkunas, of Ventura, goes over word sounds, using colored tiles as part of a phonics lesson.

Martinez is one of about 200 people being served by READ Ventura County Library, a free adult literacy program offered at six sites throughout the county library system. The program is part of California’s Library Literacy Services, which is in its 30th year both in the state and county. The occasion was marked by Gov. Jerry Brown issuing a proclamation that declared September as Adult Literacy Awareness Month.

Carol Chapman, who runs the Ventura County adult literacy program, said most people who use the one-on-one tutoring services are “people born and educated in the United States who are dealing with all kinds of factors — emotional issues, illness, trauma.”

“The average person who comes to this program reads at a third- or fourth-grade level. They can read, but not well enough to improve their employment status,” she said.

The people in the program tend to be very intelligent, but with some type of issue that makes reading difficult, Chapman said. READ MORE !

Redlands Library - Redlands’ Smiley Library’s Adult Literacy program welcomes new face

Redlands’ Smiley Library’s Adult Literacy program welcomes new face
Redlands Daily Facts: 12.04.2014 by Kristina Hernandez

A part-time literacy coordinator has been hired to help expand the A.K. Smiley Public Library’s Literacy Program.

Dottie Podolak, an educator who has worked for the Redlands Unified School District, will join Katherine Gifford and Trudy Waldron, volunteer literacy coordinators, to create new opportunities for students.

“I’m very excited to be coming in to a wonderful program and to be a part of the Smiley Library,” Podolak said by phone Thursday. “The hope for us as we look ahead is to continue to really deepen the program that has already been established.”

According to the library, 15 to 20 percent of adults in the country are in need of literacy assistance; the program’s goal is to assist adults 18 and older to improve their reading and writing skills.

The program has assisted more than 220 adults in the past four years.

“There is definitely a need for this program and the program has been really held up by these two wonderful volunteers, Trudy and Katherine, who have dedicated themselves to this cause. To come in and work with them is a privilege,” Podolak said.  READ MORE !

Newport Beach Library :: Tutor Snapshot

Newport Beach Library
Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy
Literally Speaking: Nov/Dec 2014

Snapshot: Tutor
Shari Elias Last year, Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy recognized Shari Elias for her nearly 7 years of service to the Program, both as a tutor and an instructor. Her dedication to the learners has made her an invaluable member of the team.

Literally Speaking: What first drew you to the Newport Beach Public Library literacy program?

Shari: My father passed away in 2007, and after having been his caregiver for 7 months at his home in CDM, I felt a need to volunteer in a less stressful situation. I never realized how much fun and enjoyable, while also being therapeutic, tutoring in this program would be. It took some time to realize that as I was helping others, the learners were doing me a much greater service.

Literally Speaking: How has your work here impacted your life outside?

Shari: Being involved with individuals from approximately ten different countries every week cannot be anything but exciting. Although I have always thought of myself as open-minded and fairly liberal, it is difficult for me to express my emotions felt when discussing religion, politics, lifestyles, families, marriages, sex, etc., in a group setting with foreigners. I have learned from them to be more compassionate, less prejudiced, and not to jump to conclusions when a particular group is headlined in our news. I also appreciate that I can now recite a greeting in about 8-10 different languages other than English.  READ MORE !
