<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk72670760;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Graphic Novel: A Picture is Worth a Thousand
Words for Learners<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk72670760;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Want to try something new with your
reading? Graphic novels are a great resource for learners. Some people think that
graphic novels are just comic books for kids, but they </span></span><span style="font-family: verdana;">are so much more.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk72670760;"><b><span style="font-family: verdana;">What Are Graphic Novels?<o:p></o:p></span></b></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk72670760;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Today’s graphic novels are works of
art that teach. Graphic novels have artwork on every page that help tell the
story.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk72670760;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">This is what makes it great for
learners. There are many details of the story and setting that are shown with
the pictures. It helps learners to understand the story because they can see
details of the setting and situation without reading. This makes it easier to
concentrate on the words and to understand the story better.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk72670760;">This is the story of a young boy and
his non-verbal brother living in a refugee camp in Kenya. Their father was
killed and they were accidentally separated from their mother in Somalia. Although
the story sounds sad, it is filled with tremendous hope. The illustrations are
beautiful and colorful. It is an amazing true story.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span><a href="https://library.carlsbadca.gov/home/showpublisheddocument/4547/637575583743930000"><span style="color: #2b00fe;"><b><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk72670760;">READ

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Educators and cognitive scientists recognize that “reading”
is a very broad term. In the audiobook community, we already know that
“reading” can and does mean critical listening as well as visual understanding
of printed text. Pushback still comes from some who believe that“to read” is to
decode visually. I like to call them reading “print-bound purists.” As most
long-established “eye-readers” know, assumptions about characters, plot
direction, and capacity to grasp how facts in chapter one will be required in
chapter seven, can and do miss the mark on any first complete reading of a
book. How many of these print-bound purists re-read texts — silently, of
course, as 20th century pedagogy taught many of us to be a requirement of
“skillful” reading?</span></p><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">🔽<br /></span><span style="font-family: verdana;">Professional audiobook narrators, in fact, are the people
who do that essential pre-reading for us before we sit down to acquire the
author’s work by listening to interpretive choices that make sense the first
time around as listening readers. Professional narrators, having familiarized
themselves thoroughly with the book before the recording session begins, know
and impart appropriate pacing and alterations in inflections that we can have
from the get-go when we hear their reading. Passages dense with significant and
complex information are delivered in a manner that allows us to concentrate
point by point instead of rushing by without collecting what we need for
understanding the next stage of the work. And when personal names may be too
close for eye comfort, narrators introduce specific tones — if not outright
voices — that allow us to distinguish between speakers readily.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">🔽<br /></span><span style="font-family: verdana;">Try these audiobooks as examples of how reading
comprehension can receive significant boosts from hearing skilled narrators:</span></div>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk72670760;">Carolyn Cosgrove spent 40+ years in
advertising when she and her business partner decided to sell their agency and
retire. She wanted to volunteer with an organization that was close to her heart
with reading and writing. After 10+ years of tutoring, </span><a href="https://www.newportbeachlibrary.org/about/literacy-services"><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk72670760;"><b><span style="color: #2b00fe;">NMPL</span></b></span></a> </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">still holds that place. When a friend
recommended the program to Il Jeong Choi, she registered for New Learner
Orientation and got an assessment. From there she participated in several
classes before being matched with Carolyn for one on one tutoring.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk72670760;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><b>Il Jeong, did you feel nervous about
the program when you started?</b><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk72670760;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">IJ: Yes, I was very nervous because
my English was not perfect then, and my writing and speaking were horrible.
Thus, I didn’t know how to communicate and explain my goals. The one thing only
I had then was passionate and brave about learning English.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>

reading the morning newspaper, applying for a job, or communicating with
doctors, a tutor can help a learner achieve these goals. Another reason is by
prioritizing their needs in a one-to-one setting. Sometimes it is difficult to
keep up in a class with 20 other students with different goals, while working
with a tutor focuses on the learner’s individual goals, level, and pace.</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> </span><a href="https://calexicolibrary.org/sites/calexicolibrary.org/files/attachments/CML_MAY2021_Newsletter-Web.pdf" style="font-family: verdana;"><b><span style="color: #2b00fe;">READ

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Governor

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: verdana;">This morning
<a href="https://www.gov.ca.gov/2021/05/14/california-roars-back-governor-newsom-presents-100-billion-california-comeback-plan/"><b><span style="color: #2b00fe;">Governor

the <a href="http://www.ebudget.ca.gov/"><b><span style="color: #2b00fe;">2021-22 State Budget</span></b></a>. The “May
Revision” process allows Governor Newsom the ability to update his January
Budget to reflect the April (or in this case, May) tax receipts and federal
funding allotments. In the May Revision document the Governor released this
morning, it states, “The May Revision stands in stark contrast to the budget of
one year ago. Compared to a projected budget deficit of $54 billion a year ago,
the state now has a projected $75.7 billion surplus. Combined with over $25
billion in federal relief, this supports a $100 billion California Comeback
Plan – a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to not only speed the state’s recovery
from the pandemic, but to address long-standing challenges and provide opportunity
for every California family – regardless of their income, race, or ZIP code.”<o:p></o:p></span></p>

This post features one of our librarians, Amy Crepeau!<br /></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: verdana;">When I was a child, some of my favorite books involved libraries and librarians
and I think that is where my interest began. I remember reading All of a Kind
Family and how important library books were to the sisters and the chapter when
Sarah lost her library book--the librarian was so compassionate. There were so
many examples like this and some, unfortunately, where librarians were the
opposite of compassionate but people telling how important libraries were to
them inspired me. Beyond that, I love libraries! Programs, storytimes, books,
computers, literacy, study space, free to use, people from infants to seniors
coming through our doors everday…sign me up! In 2009, I finally decided to go
to graduate school to earn my MLIS and the feeling of accomplishment I had in
May 2016 when I walked across that virtual stage was far more than earning
either my high school or college diplomas.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

volunteers from Huntington Beach and seeing people accomplish important things
like reading with their children, getting a better job, passing the driver’s
test or becoming U.S. Citizens. It was constantly inspiring and people were so
grateful to the library.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><a href="https://www.facebook.com/LiteracyVolunteersHBPL/"><b><span style="color: #2b00fe;">READ MORE ➤➤</span></b></a><o:p></o:p></span></p>
