Azusa Library ▬ A New Challenge

A New Challenge

Literacy Update: Summer 2020

The Literacy Office is usually buzzing with small group ESL tutoring sessions, one on one tutoring, appointment and trainings for new tutors and new learner assessments but for the past 3.5 months it has been empty. Our Adult Literacy services, as all Library program and services have moved online.

We have been fortunate to move some of our learners and tutors online but we’ve come to learn of the digital divide within our community. Our Adult Literacy Services provides online learning tools such as Reading Horizons and our Leamos program which is web based but these opportunities attract individuals who are already comfortable with the technology. Moving forward our commitment lies in reaching all our learners and creating a space where our learners feel comfortable learning to using this technology.

COVID-19 taught us we could exist in a world we never thought imaginable but if we scale it down to the small, important details we see how much we can learn. We can see how much we take for granted.

Click to listen to a conversation with Azusa City Library Manager Leila about how the library is meeting the challenges of Covid-19.  LISTEN 06:54

Azusa Library :: The Dream Of Citizenship Is Alive And Well

The Dream Of Citizenship Is Alive And Well At Azusa Library
SGV Tribune: 11.21.2019 by Anissa Rivera

For Miguel Requelme, 34, of Covina, action is hope.

Born in Mexico, and brought to America at age 3, he grew up grateful that his parents sacrificed so much to give him a better life. Requelme graduated from Wilson High School in Long Beach in 2003, married in 2005 and is the proud father of two daughters. He worked his way up in the fast food industry and is now a general manager.

“As a naturalized citizen, I am looking forward to starting my own business this upcoming year,” Requelme said.

But first, he made time to celebrate Azusa’s newest crop of American citizens. Requelme, after all, is himself a graduate of the Inspired Citizenship program at Azusa City Library.

Arlene Calderon, adult literacy program coordinator at Azusa City Library, invited Requelme to speak to 33 newly-minted Americans at a Nov. 9 celebration.  READ MORE >>

BASIC LITERACY
Over 10 million adults in California function at or below basic literacy levels. They may not have the skills required to be gainfully employed or economically self-sufficient. They are unlikely to have the skills, and the confidence, to engage in their children’s education or participate in community activities. Yet once they start to learn, there is no stopping them . . . and you can help them get started!

INSPIRED CITIZENSHIP
According to the U.S. Census, nearly 1-third of Azusa residents were born outside the United States. The goal of our Inspired Citizenship program is to empower our community and encourage stronger civic participation for all City of Azusa residents.

The library offers:
weekly classes
study materials
1-on-1 coaching
special information workshops to help you and your family achieve your dreams of becoming U.S. citizens

GRASSROOTS ESL
According to the U.S. Census, nearly 1-quarter of Azusa’s 46,361 residents report they speak English “less than very well.” In response, the Azusa community has joined together to provide Grassroots ESL (English as a 2nd Language) to help limited English speakers gain confidence and skill in speaking English.

HEALTH LITERACY
Health Literacy Learning is a collaboration with the Azusa Neighborhood Wellness Center and the Azusa Pacific University Department of TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages).

Health Literacy Learning classes focus on English vocabulary, grammar, conversations, and reading and writing exercises related to topics such as nutrition, exercise and preventing disease.

Two levels of classes are offered. Each is scheduled twice a week, for 8-week sessions.

Azusa Library :: Mike Wang An American Citizen

Mike Wang An American Citizen
Literacy Update: June/July 2018

Mike Wang is a prominent business man in China. He has two successful companies in Beijing. Mike was able to provide a good life for his family in China but he always went back to one memory. As a young man Mike came to this country for a training and was impressed by American democracy and prosperity. He was impressed by the idea that you could be anything you wanted in America. There are no limitations to an idea. At that moment he knew that one day he would become an American citizen. Mike has been here for 6 years as a permanent resident.

One day Mike came into our library and saw our Citizenship corner and asked about the classes that we offered. He began attending them back in January. Mike is now attending NorthWest College in West Covina. He is studying for his Associate’s Degree in Healthcare Administration.

This is such a change of direction to what his background is in. I mentioned this to Mike, he said when he came to America he purchased healthcare for his family and he was so confused. He looked at the problem through his business efficient eyes. Mike feels there could be an easier way for people to understand and sign up for the best healthcare for their family.  READ MORE >>

Azusa Library :: Cathay Reta Hands Torch to Arlene Calderon

Cathay Reta Hands Torch to Arlene Calderon
Literacy Updates: Sep/Oct 2017

As the Azusa City Library staff transitions into fall, The Literacy Program is preparing for a shift from one Literacy Coordinator to another. The Literacy program is saying goodbye and thank you to its long time coordinator Cathay Reta.

Cathay began working as the Adult Literacy Coordinator for the Azusa City Library in 2011. Her grassroots ESL program went hand and hand with the Azusa community, in which a large majority of it’s residents claim they have difficulty with English in their everyday household. The program was formed in the fall of 2013 with seven community partner sites around the city willing to collaborate.

In 2014, Cathay expanded the library’s services by introducing a citizenship program that specializes in tutoring and access to information for those desiring to become U.S. citizens. Through collaborations and events with local businesses, the residents of the community have benefitted greatly from the positive impact of these newly provided services.

Despite all the progress the programs have made over the past couple of years, Cathay Reta decided it was, “time for a new chapter in her life.” She recently moved on from her position as Literacy Coordinator and is now involved with consulting work for literacy programs across the nation. Cathay Reta leaves a strong legacy behind as well as many goals accomplished.

Reta will be handing her head of literacy program duties over to Arlene Calderon.  READ MORE >>

Azusa Library :: Celebrates its ‘Literacy Heroes’

Azusa celebrates its ‘Literacy Heroes’
Fume of Sighs: 4.21.2018 by Dena Burroughs

The Adult Literacy Program of the Azusa Library, in conjunction with the Foothill Learning Alliance, celebrated its volunteers on April 21, 2018, with a “Literacy Heroes-Volunteer Recognition Brunch” at the Azusa Greens Country Club.

Fifteen volunteer instructors and coordinators socialized, enjoyed breakfast, and received a Certificate of Appreciation for another year of selfless service to the community, which they offer in the form of ESL lessons, Citizenship classes, and more. These volunteers dedicate an average of 12 hours each month to help others gain literacy. They were also gifted with a copy of Leslie Odom Jr.’s book Failing Up, which he wrote to encourage his readers to pursue their passions while rising over the rejections that usually precede success. Odom is best known for his performance as Aaron Burr in the now famous musical Hamilton.  READ MORE >>

Azusa Library :: Foothill Learning Alliance Brings Together Tutors, English Learners

Foothill Learning Alliance brings together tutors, English learners at Azusa library
Pasadena Star News: 5.13.2017 by Anissa Rivera

Hope is a word that would earn you nine points in Scrabble.

It’s also what Eugenia Arias had in spades when she came to the United States in 1988. She was 20 years old and eager to work.

“I started working as a babysitter with a very special family,” said Arias, now 47 and an Azusa resident. “I took care of a baby girl who was 5-months-old. I stopped taking care of her when she was 11.”

Arias’ charge is now 27-years-old and still in touch with her former babysitter.

It was that family who encouraged her to learn English, even though she resisted.

“I thought English wasn’t that important to me,” Arias said. “When I moved to Azusa about six years ago, my son started to go to school. He needed help with his homework, so we got a tutor for him at the library. That was how I started to learn English. It took me two years to learn English.”

Today, Arias tutors English learners three times a week at the Azusa City Library. She is one of about 40 volunteers who donate almost 2,000 hours a year helping others.

“I admire the group because they rise up to the task and they are motivated to learn English,” she said. “And I’ve made a lot of friends by speaking English. Even if we were bilingual, we would speak in English to help each other grow.”  READ MORE @
