Read, Connect, Discover: Library Bingo via California Center for the Book

Read, Connect, Discover: Library Bingo

Read, Connect Discover: Library Bingo challenges California community members to read in a variety of formats and genres, connect with other community members, and discover new experiences and community places. Cards (and digital templates) are available in both ENGLISH and SPANISH and are FREE for California libraries and literacy programs, while supplies last. Bingo-style game cards present options in each of the three categories:

ORANGE = READ Example: Read a biography or memoir.

GREEN = DISCOVER Example: Visit a local, state, or national park.

The cards were designed for use with your adult community members in mind. Community members complete five consecutive squares in any direction and return the card to the library. A brief survey is included on the back of the card.

Winter Reading Challenge :: Mark Cuban

Mark Cuban Pledges $35,000 To Global Reading Challenge For First Book and Libraries and Their Communities
First Book: 11.15.2017 by Melanie Boyer

Billionaire investor and Shark Tank personality Mark Cuban has announced his sponsorship of the inaugural Beanstack Winter Reading Challenge in support of local libraries. Cuban has challenged close to 100 libraries all over the country and South Korea, to meet a collective goal of reading at least 1.3 million minutes and 55,000 books during the month of January. If achieved, Cuban pledges to donate $25,000 to First Book, a nonprofit social enterprise that provides new books, learning materials, and other essentials to children in need. He will also give $10,000 for top-performing libraries to use for their community programs or donate to nonprofit organizations in their area.

Participating libraries will use Beanstack, an innovative software that facilitates reading programs for schools and libraries, and makes it easy to track the amount of time and books read. “After doing a storytime for my local library, Dallas Public Library, I became increasingly inspired by the work libraries do for their communities,” says Cuban. “Growing up, my mom used to give me a quarter for every book I read. Through reading programs libraries run with Beanstack, they are providing these kinds of incentives for readers throughout the community. I love the idea that we will encourage readers through a shared, ambitious goal, and that the prize for everyone will be to pay it forward to an awesome organization focused on literacy and access to books.”

CLA Summer Reading Challenge :: #OneMillionReaders

One Million Readers

Children, teens and adults, are you up for a challenge?

Please join CLA’s One Million Readers summer challenge again this year, and engage even more community members with your summer programs!

In 2015, participation in California’s summer reading and learning programs increased by 8%. CLA is asking public libraries to conduct outreach and create partnerships to increase participation again this year.

Public library summer reading and learning programs:
· foster communities of readers and library users
· help prevent summer learning loss in children and teens,
· are entry points for community members to learn about the library’s resources, and
· help adults model good reading habits for youth.

The more people who take part in summer reading, the greater impact our programs will have.

Will you accept the #OneMillionReaders challenge? Sign up now!
- Over 790,000 Californians signed up for a public library summer reading program during 2015.
- Over 1.4 million Californians attended summer reading events and activities.
- Over 116,000 children and teens read at least five books during the summer reading program.

Children, teens and adults who take part in summer reading talk about the books they read:
76% of children | 68% of teens | 80% of adults

They enjoy the summer reading program.
90% of children | 84% of teens | 86% of adults

And they plan to return to the library after the summer.
86% of children | 83% of teens | 91% of adults

Children who read, succeed! And California’s summer readers and library users return to school ready to learn!

Participating Libraries 2016
We ask participating public libraries to commit to conducting outreach and creating partnerships to increase their summer reading participation this year!
