Newport Beach Library - Literacy Day Celebrated

Literacy Day Celebrated in Newport Beach Library
Corona Del Mar Today: 9.12.2013

Life in Newport Beach without the skills to communicate in English left one woman feeling like a hamster running on a wheel in a cage. Another woman described endless days surfing the Internet, too uncomfortable to step foot outside her home. Another said she spent her entire childhood and part of her adult life finding ways to fool her family, teachers and friends into thinking she could read and tell time.

The women — all “learners” with the Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy organization — spoke today in the Central Library Friends Room as part of a celebration of International Literacy Day. A standing-room only crowd of about 150 people shared foods from around the world as well as literacy accomplishments.

Tutor Katie Northup  &
 2013 Hoffman Award
recipient, Marnalee Lopez

“Literacy is a hard word when you can’t read,” said Marnalee Lopez, who described trying to read a flier about literacy services 20 years ago. She studied for awhile, she said, then returned to the ProLiteracy program in Newport Beach when her triplets were in fourth grade.

“I realized they were becoming smarter than I was,” she said. “And that wasn’t going to happen.”

Lopez received the Rochelle Hoffman Memorial Award, given each year to a standout learner in the Literacy Services program. The award is named for a Corona del Mar woman who volunteered as a tutor before her death in 2004.  READ MORE !

My First Election Day
BY LEARNER LETICIA BUENROSTRO
I was busy all morning trying to finish everything by 3:30 pm to be ready to vote. When I arrived to the polling place I was nervous because it was my first time. The line was very long but when I turned around I was relieved to see a friend, so I went back to stay near her. I asked her, “What do I have to do to vote?”

Newport Beach - Literally Speaking

Each year, Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy publishes a collection of learner writings consisting of stories, personal essays and poetry. Entitled In Our Own Words, the books are distributed at the annual International Literacy Day celebration, this year held on September 12, 2013.

Altadena - Let's Read
Inspiring History Exciting Future

Looking back through the years the Bob Lucas Branch and Let’s Read, Altadena! have an inspiring history. After being closed for many years the Altadena Library Branch, formerly named the Arroyo Branch, was reopened in October 1991 with a grand celebration featuring former Lakers player Michael Cooper as the Guest Speaker. Since that grand reopening many wonderful activities and programs have been presented. Credit must be given to the late Winnie Ragsdale for her leadership in getting the Literacy Program started.

Adult Learner Leadership Institute

The Adult Learner Leadership Institute was held on May 3 through 5 at the Cole Library. Fifteen learners attended from 6 Southern California libraries, with six learners from Carlsbad. Participants attended workshops on leadership, networking, and self-esteem. The learners also gained valuable public speaking skills. The learners’ speeches on the final day of the Institute were the highlight of the weekend’s activities. According to one learner, “I now find my-self very confident to speak in front of people due to the Institute. That is why I liked it a lot.”
