Carlsbad Library :: Literacy Services - Browse Our New Consumables

Browse Our New Consumables
Learning Connection: Sep/Oct 2017

For years, our adult literacy program has been able to offer free textbooks, workbooks and fiction books to all learners in the program. We have recently added new consumables, including over 100 titles of fiction books. These new books are possible through a generous grant from the California State Library. We encourage our learners to choose up to two books each to start building their home library. Please keep in mind quantities are limited. For most of your reading, continue to check out books from the literacy collection!

Giving Back To Your Community

Are you looking for a rewarding way to volunteer in your community while helping an adult improve their life? Volunteering at the Upland Public Library’s Adult Literacy Program is a wonderful way to offer service to your city. The Adult Literacy Program provides free, private, one-on-one tutoring for adults seeking assistance in improving reading and writing skills. After an initial interview, the adult learner is matched with a volunteer-tutor and they meet once or twice a week at the Upland Public Library. Adult learners set their own goals based on their needs. Here are some of the areas where our specially trained tutors can help:
•            Tutoring for the GED or citizenship test.
•            Reading and writing improvement
•            Comprehension and spelling improvement

Since its start in 1989, the completely grant-funded Adult Literacy Program has successfully impacted the lives of over 1,000 individual adult learners with the help. For more information, or to volunteer as a tutor, please contact the Literacy Office at (909) 931-4211.

Beaumont Library :: Stories from the Porch-Building a World of Books

Stories from the Porch-Building a World of Books
Patch/Banning-Beaumont: 9.03.2017 by Luren Dickinson

Join Beaumont Library for its 8th annual “Stories from the Porch – Building a World of Books” program from 10 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, September 23, in celebration of International Literacy Day.

The program encourages community leaders, community members, literacy volunteers, library staff and/or adult learners to read their favorite children’s book from the “front porch” of the library. Readers may bring their own book or read one we supply, or tell a story, read a poem, sing, dance, or play an instrument.

The program will draw attention to the problem of low literacy and illiteracy among adults (1 in 5 adults in the United States has low literacy skills). This means they are unable to complete job applications, read notes home from school, or administer medication properly.  READ MORE @
