Carlsbad Library :: Library Learning Center 10-Year Anniversary

Library Learning Center 10-Year Anniversary

The City of Carlsbad is proud to announce the 10-year anniversary of its Library Learning Center on Aug. 23, 2018. The Library Learning Center is located at 3368 Eureka Place. Services and programs are free.

The Library Learning Center was the third library to open its doors in Carlsbad and serves nearly 5,000 children, teens and adults each month.
The Library Learning Center features a Spanish, English and bilingual library collection for all ages.

The Library Learning Center offers an average of nearly 30 free programs in both English and Spanish each month, including story times, homework help, concerts and a Spanish-language book club.

Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Fridays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Library Learning Center is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

“The Library Learning Center is integral to the city’s mission to provide community members of all ages with convenient access to high quality resources and services to enrich their lives,” said Heather Pizzuto, Library & Cultural Arts Director. “Over the past 10 years, we’ve heard countless success stories of how the Learning Center’s programs are making a difference for Carlsbad residents.”

The Library Learning Center offers specialized education programs, such as the Early Literacy Program, where school-age children meet with their parent or caregiver and a volunteer tutor to strengthen reading skills. Currently 10 student-parent teams are working with volunteer tutors.

“One of our young students who participated in the Early Literacy Program improved his reading assessment scores by 60 percent,” said Pizzuto. “In addition to his scholastic improvement, his parents shared that the program helped him gain confidence and make new friends at school.”

Adult programs are also available. Each year in Literacy Services, approximately 100 adults meet one-to-one with a volunteer tutor to improve their reading and writing skills. Past participants have used the program to help them read to their children, read medicine labels and apply for college or new job. All program participants report they have met at least one of their reading or writing goals after working with a volunteer tutor.  READ MORE >>

Los Angeles Public Library :: The New Americans Initiative Provides Free Citizenship Help

The New Americans Initiative Provides Free Citizenship Help
HS Insider LA Times: 7.25.2018 by Madina Safdari

Nestled in the heart of downtown Los Angeles sits Central Library, competing with the grandeur of banks and skyscrapers. Well established in comparison to other Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) branches, Central library serves as the hub for all services and resources imaginable.

“A lot of us, we go to the library to search for information, so I think it’s nice to know that the library provides additional services” Rita Orantes of the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN) said.

Since its inception in 1872, LAPL has grown to offer more than just book borrowing and a quiet place to study. Their free and extensive programs target community needs such as tutoring, financial guidance, veterans support, and recently an immigration and citizenship service.

Librarian Madeline Peña used the resources at the LAPL to pave her own path to citizenship. With the help of the library’s citizenship materials that preceded the new expanded program, she became naturalized in 2009.

“I checked out study materials, I studied all my civics questions. We all drive here in Los Angeles, so I used to put my CD in and listen to all the questions in both English and Spanish. Having those free resources really made things easy for me,” Peña said.

Peña said the LAPL has always aimed to serve their diverse communities.

With the launch of the New Americans Initiative (NAI) in January, the LAPL sought to support L.A.’s immigrant population with six New Americans Centers and welcome stations at all 73 branches. Their resources include, but are not limited to, second language resources, family services, “know your rights” cards, financial coaching, job opportunities and citizenship classes.  READ MORE >>

Read Adult Learners’ Stories In Upcoming Redlands Adult Literacy Program Anthology
Redlands Daily Facts: 7.28.2018 by Diane Shimota, Adult Literacy Coor-A.K. Smiley Library

Adult learners seek help in their writing in order to fill out job applications, communicate with family members, help their children with homework or advance their own education. Because of the importance of writing, the Redlands Adult Literacy Program identified 2018 as the Year of the Writer.

At a recent writing workshop, adult learners in the Adult Literacy Program wrote letters of appreciation to the Redlands City Council and A.K. Smiley Public Library trustees about the impact of adult literacy in their lives. Following is an excerpt from one of the many letters.

Sonia Gutierrez wrote, “I originally came to the program to learn how to write better. The Adult Literacy Program is very important to me because it helps me learn English, improves my writing, and speech. I’ve learned a lot of new words. It also helps me with my job and I’ve been helping my family with their doctor’s appointments.”

Learner Mina Ryan finds herself texting with family members rather than calling them on the phone. She said, “Everybody communicates by writing now, so I need to be able to write better. It is never too late to learn, and now I feel more confident when I read or write. Thank you so much for this program.”

As part of the Year of the Writer initiative, tutors have learned strategies to ease writing anxieties, such as the use of dialogue journals in which tutors and learners write short messages to one another. They practiced steps in the writing process, from brainstorming ideas to editing final drafts, and they gained tips for helping learners generate topic ideas through picture books and story starters.  READ MORE >>
