Altadena Library :: Digital Literacy Impact for ESL Students at our Literacy Center

Digital Literacy Impact for ESL Students at our Literacy Center
Altadena Library CONNECT*: December 2016

While the foundations of adult literacy programs are to improve reading and writing skills, these days it includes information literacy, financial literacy, health literacy and digital literacy.

The University Library of The University of Illinois defines digital literacy as: “The ability to use digital technology, communication tools or networks to locate, evaluate, use and create information.”

At the Branch we strive to help our literacy learners with meeting a wide range of literacy and informational needs. We have small group ESL classes that meet Monday through Thursdays mornings. This Fall we were able to offer a 5 week beginners computer class to our eager ESL students. The bilingual computer instructors taught the students much needed computer skills. For the first time, all the students were able to sign up for their own e-mail addresses, use Word and practice typing, and learn how to search the Internet.

Many had expressed that they had been intimidated by the computers and that with this exposure, they had less fear and felt more comfortable using the computers. The students took this opportunity to practice their skills at the library during open hours.

Most of the students do not have a computer at home and rely on the library for internet access. Many students have language barriers to employment and lack proficiency in computer skills. With improved computer skills, that is one less hurdle to overcome to seeking better employment.

According to ProLiteracy, an organization that advocates for adult literacy, low literacy costs the US $225 Billion or more each year in non-productivity in the workforce and a loss of revenue due to unemployment. According to the World Bank, only 52.5% of adults reporting lack of computer skills were employed, compared to 72.7%. The positive effects of improved computer skills translates to improved self sufficiency and improved work opportunities benefiting all aspects of the students’ lives.

Lucio, a student from the class states, “Thanks to the personnel of the Bob Lucas Library for providing the much needed computer classes. With the lessons they taught, I am able to practice on my own and gain confidence working on the computer. In particular, I like to practice my typing which helps me run my small business as a washing machine repair man.”

Altadena Library :: Bob Lucas Branch and Literacy Center Honored at Neighborhood Church

Bob Lucas Branch and Literacy Center Honored at Neighborhood Church
Connect: July 2016 From the Director

On June 11th, 2016 the Bob Lucas Branch and Literacy Center was honored at the Altadena’s 7th Day Adventist’s Church’s International Day of Fellowship for community service. The Church recognizes one organization’s community service annually at this event. We were this year’s proud recipients!  Staff were presented with a plaque at the service that now adorns our wall.

The International Day of Fellowship was coordinated by Dr. Sybil Cross and the service was conducted by Lead Pastor, Dr. Richardson Honoré, Pastor Dr. Royal Harrison and Pastor E.M. McBride. The event featured beautiful singing by Noelette Leader and other parishioners and music by the Church band. This spiritually uplifting event celebrated neighbors, community, and diversity. International fellowship was celebrated by a parade of flags from around the world that were carried by local community members. Our own ESL teacher, Modesta Nava proudly carried the flag for Mexico.

We are grateful for this recognition for our literacy program and library services for the community.

Altadena Library :: Bob Lucas Memorial Branch Summer Reading Opportunities

Bob Lucas Memorial Branch
Summer Reading Opportunities
Connect: June 2016 Altadena Library, From the Director

Summer is shining its rays upon us and we welcome patrons of all ages to join our summer reading program. Last year, due to popular demand, the summer reading program for adults was brought back for the second year in a row. At the Branch we had 19 adults sign up for the summer reading program and half the adults that signed up were our adult literacy students! Many of our literacy students strive to improve their reading skills and the summer reading program is a great opportunity to do so and win prizes at the same time. Many of our literacy students are learning English and take this opportunity to try out reading an English book. Otherwise, they can also participate by reading a book in their own native language.  That counts too!

Also just in time for the summer, we are implementing an interactive online learning program called Reading Horizons. Reading Horizons gives our learners the opportunity to cover 68 interactive lessons, common word lessons, vocabulary, and 280 reading passages to practice reading fluency and comprehension, along with skill-based games. Tutors and our staff can also monitor the progress of the learners with this system.

Reading Horizons is something that can be used by many of our beginning adult learners to address specific literacy needs. For example, our ESL class can use the phonics decoding method from Reading Horizon to breakdown the sounds, spelling and reading of a word. Another example is that a learner working with a tutor can use the comprehension reading exercises for more advanced reading skills.

If you’re an adult or know an adult who is interested in learning to read and improve their English with our new Reading Horizons tools, let us know and we’ll be happy to help. Please contact us at: literacy@altadenalibrary.org or 626-798-8338.

Altadena Library :: Adult Literacy Tutor

Bob Lucas Memorial Branch Adult Literacy Tutor, Stephner White
Connect: May 2016 From the Director

The backbone of Let’s ReadAltadena’s Adult Literacy Program is our hard working and passionate volunteer tutors. Without their knowledge and assistance, our program would not be able to provide the tutoring services for our adult learners. Our tutors do not require advanced degrees in education or even experience in tutoring. They just need the desire to help another person to read and write. People coming in with that desire just need a place to work with a learner, a little bit of training, and the workbooks, which we provide.

Stephner “Steff” White has been a tutor with our literacy program for several years, and has worked with many learners in our program. During high school, she worked with computers and telephones, which led to her being involved in communications and training with the city of Los Angeles. Steff always felt a calling to be a teacher so she began tutoring during, and after, college. We asked Steff why she decided to tutor at Let’s Read Altadena and she expressed her wish to work with her Altadena community and that she had been influenced by Roberta Lauderdale, who was our literacy coordinator from 1996 to 2014 before she passed away.

While working with learners in our program, Steff said that her overall goal is to learn about the person she is tutoring and discovering what they want to accomplish with their literacy skills. This is a regular process for many of our tutors and the initial steps they take before working on the literacy needs of their learner. Steff uses many of the literacy materials we have for our tutors and learners, but she states, “being in a library,  I have all of the resources I need!”

Altadena Library :: Bob Lucas Memorial Branch

Bob Lucas Memorial Branch
CONNECT: April 2016

The Bob Lucas MemorialBranch Library and Literacy Center has been serving the West Altadena neighborhood since its opening in 1957 (and reopening in 1991 after being closed for 13 years due to Prop 13 budget cuts).

Our history is a rich one with the establishment of the adult literacy program, Let’s Read Altadena in 1990 at the Branch. The literacy program is one of few in the region with the next closest one being in Glendale. The literacy program has provided volunteer opportunities for community members as tutors and has helped many adults improve their reading and writing skills over the years.

In addition, the literacy program offers free ESL classes to students and free one-on-one tutoring for adults. Train to be a tutor on-line at your own pace and when it is convenient for you. Call 626-798-8338 for more information.

In addition to our literacy programs we offer craft programs, movies, and games for children. We offer fun flick fridays showings of popular newly released children movies once a month. Throughout the year we also run reading programs such as our Winter Reading Program that encourages kids to read books, complete book reports and earn prizes. Other activities we offer are DIY inspirations Stations such as the “make your own Valentine card” station and game days. We also have an exciting line up of performers for this year’s summer reading program. Whether it be books, crafts, tutors, classes, community information, research help, study space, computer access, scanning, copying, printing, or up-to-date DVDs, we have something for everyone at our library!

Altadena Library :: Give the Gift of Reading and Writing

Give the Gift of Reading and Writing
Altadena Library~Know It All: Jan 2016

The new year is a great time to be grateful for the things you can do. But maybe there is room for a new challenge. If you can read this, imagine someone who cannot. Do you have time to help?  We need volunteers.  At the Bob Lucas Memorial Library and Literacy Center, the Literacy Department's goal is to help adults improve their reading and writing skills. Our Literacy Coordinator, Edward William, matches a volunteer tutor to a learner and that's when the work starts.  Tutors help learners with a wide range of skill building: learning the alphabet, letters and sounds; reading a book, newspaper, or magazine; writing a letter; learning to type; filling out a job application; preparing for the GED test; basic computing skills and more.

The tutor and learner arrange their own study sessions – deciding  how often to meet, when to meet, and where to meet. Typically, one tutor is assigned to one learner and a tutor and learner meet once a week for an hour. We also offer print and online study materials for the tutors to use for their teaching sessions or for learners to study on their own. Edward is available to offer support to the tutors and there are tutor workshops during the year so that the tutors can meet each other and share ideas and tips.

If you would like to give the gift of reading and writing by becoming a volunteer tutor, you need to attend a six hour online training workshop. Volunteers learn about literacy, teaching methods, lesson planning, and learning styles during their training sessions. Volunteers may train on their own computer or use one of our library computers. Many of our volunteers have expressed the joy it gives them to see their learners making progress.

The Literacy Center also offers a small group ESL class that meets Monday & Thursday mornings. As students of the ESL class make progress, they can advance into the Literacy program and work one-on-one with a tutor.  READ MORE @

To help raise awareness regarding the censorship of books, the San Diego Public Library, in partnership with the San Diego Costume Guild, presents the 4th annual All-Day Read-Aloud Read-a-thon on Friday, October 2, 2015 from 12 to 5 p.m. in the Garden Courtyard at the San Diego Central Library at the Joan Λ Irwin Jacobs Common, located at 330 Park Blvd in downtown San Diego.
The public is invited to read alongside librarians, volunteer and teen readers, and special guests from the Costume Guild, who will appear as costumed characters from many favorite books including Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland.

“It’s important to realize that not every book will be right for every reader,” says library director Misty Jones. “The freedom to choose for ourselves what we want to read is a hard-won right that we must not take for granted. Reading, speaking, thinking and expressing ourselves freely are core American values.”

Altadena Library : : Lucio Martinez, an Adult Literacy Success Story!

Branch Notes:  Lucio Martinez, an Adult Literacy Success Story!

July was life-changing for literacy learner Lucio Martinez.  Lucio decided to open his own appliance repair business. A decision like this requires a lot of planning, training and motivation. The challenge is greater if you need English literacy skills to read repair manuals and forms. Lucio’s daughter visited the library and learned about the ESL program; she promptly shared the information with her father. Since beginning English classes, he has improved his reading, writing, speaking and listening.

In preparation for starting his new business, Lucio has also learned to download and read appliance repair manuals on the Internet, to watch training videos, and how to create his own business cards and advertisements. He even ordered custom shirts online for his new business.

Lucio attributes some of his achievements and his goals to the library’s staff and the program. “All of the staff have helped me, since they are good people. This has helped me 1,000%!”

For more information about the literacy program, please drop by the Bob Lucas Branch Library on Lincoln or call (626) 798-8338. Edward William, Literacy Coordinator
