Paragraphs: Give Us a Break! ▬ Teach Write

Paragraphs: Give Us a Break!

Paragraphs
Teach Write: 1.17.2018 by Jennifer Laffin

I’d like to try a little experiment. Please read the following two passages.

   Passage #1:

   Passage #2:

Now that you've read both passages, think about the following questions:

➤ Which passage was easier to read?

Which passage was easier to understand?

How did you feel after reading both passages?

If you are like me, you found the second passage easier to read and understand. Why? Because it had paragraphs.

Using paragraphs correctly is an important skill for all writers because it makes the reader’s job much easier and more pleasant.

Paragraphs exist to give the readers’ eyes a rest and a few seconds to process what they’ve read before they start the next line. Paragraphs signal that a change is coming.

They tie common sentences together in one neat little area.

Readers expect them. Readers need them. When they are missing, it is noticed.

But how do writers know when to start a new paragraph?

Use the New-New Rule:

Newport Beach Library ▬ Tutor’s Corner: A Focus On Poetry

Tutor’s Corner: A Focus On Poetry

Literally Speaking: March 2021

With the renewed interest in poetry thanks to Amanda Gorman, now is a great time to examine how you can use poetry in your literacy lessons. Some students – and teachers - tend to shy away from poetry, but poetry is a great medium to teach adult learners at varying reading levels.

Without getting lost in a poet’s intended purpose for writing the poem, Nancy Padak’s “Poetry in the Adult Literacy Classroom” outlines how you can use poetry to aid in reading and writing instruction.

Focus on these four areas:

➧ Comprehension

 Fluency

 Phonics

 Writing

Redlands Library ▬ Literacy Students Write About Their Pandemic Experiences In New Anthology

Redlands Literacy Students Write About Their Pandemic Experiences In New Anthology

Our Stories,
Pandemic Reflections

Redlands Daily Facts: 2.05.2021 by Diane Shimota, Adult Literacy Coord: A.K. Smiley Library

The Redlands Adult Literacy Program recently published “Our Stories, A Collection of Writings, Volume 3,” which includes writings from adult learners enrolled in the Redlands Adult Literacy Program. Over 40 adult learners and tutors contributed written works for the anthology. These works focused on the learners’ journeys to literacy, personal reflections, family and friends, memories and adventures, and reflections about books the learners had read. This year, a special chapter entitled “Pandemic Reflections” was added to the anthology providing an opportunity for authors to share the impact that the pandemic has had on their lives.

The anthology provided an opportunity for adult learners to write stories from their hearts, choosing just the right words to express themselves, and then to share those stories with the broader community. Previously, the Redlands community would be invited to a “Celebration of Authors” event, where adult learners would read their works to an audience that included their families and friends. Because of the social distancing requirements caused by the pandemic, this year the library recorded authors reading their stories, so that the whole community could experience the joy of hearing the works of adult learners who are working to improve their literacy.

This anthology’s pandemic reflections were especially heart-felt and relevant as everyone continues to adapt to changes caused by the pandemic. Several learners wrote about the losses they had experienced, like the inability to see family or gather in large groups, supporting children with online school, learning how to meet with tutors remotely, and adapting to wearing face masks.  READ MORE ➤➤

Los Angeles Public Library ▬ Summer Reading Poetry Series

Summer Reading Poetry Series

READ
Newsletter

READ: Fall 2020

A newsletter written by the adult learners and tutors in Adult Literacy Services

For many learners, the Summer Reading Challenge poetry series was their first time learning about, writing, and reading poetry. Through the four-week course, their poetic language grew, and along with it their confidence in expressing themselves poetically. Even conversations became a perfect place to “speak in poetry.” As Laurie Lew, the poetry class teacher, puts it, “The great discovery for me in teaching this class is how naturally we all use the language of metaphor.”

Perhaps this was why our learners connected with each other and the class from the beginning. As English language learners, they were all discovering how to express themselves in an unfamiliar language – one notorious for its complex rules. Perhaps the freedom which poetry allows the poet gave each of our participants the chance to express themselves, gracefully and thoughtfully, without having to worry about those rules. The poetic voice was in them already. All they needed was the freedom Laurie provided and a space to comfortably share their thoughts and feelings.

Student Poems

Super Moon and Grandson

Found super moon, On Venice street.
On the way home from work.
In Autumn night.
Staring, following bright yellow moon,
Slowing down wheels & handle under neon.
Let Moon Walk in my yard.
«Good Night to the moon on the tree top of lemon. »
Closing wooden gate with sleepy hand.
Opening the mail from daughter.
Hi from universe heard.
Holding breath, Staring ultrasound.
Waving tiny fingers, Praying curved posture.
Jumping heart with joy. Thinking round forehead.
Found super moon, On my daughter.
On the way from journey.
At the Autumn of life.
