Azusa Library ▬ Citizenship Specialist Speaks About Inspired Citizenship Program Now Being Virtual

Citizenship Specialist Speaks About Our Inspired Citizenship Program Now Being Virtual

Azusa Adult Literacy Podcasts: 2020

Inspired Citizenship

According to the U.S. Census, nearly 1-third of Azusa residents were born outside the United States. The goal of our Inspired Citizenship program is to empower our community and encourage stronger civic participation for all City of Azusa residents. The immigrant community often faces barriers to citizenship, due to low or interrupted education levels and limited English proficiency.

Created by the Azusa City Library, Inspired Citizenship is a program to help adults prepare to become United States citizens. The library offers:

weekly classes

study materials

1-on-1 coaching

special information workshops to help you and your family achieve your dreams of becoming U.S. citizens

Due to COVID-19, our weekly classes have transitioned into a virtual service. The Azusa City Library is now offering Citizenship Classes through Zoom on the following days:

Tuesdays: 9 am (English/ Bilingual)

Wednesdays: 9 am (Spanish)

To request more information, please contact Joyce Ayala at (626) 812-5273

PODCASTS

The Adult Literacy program has developed a podcast of quick, insights into our tutor programs. The following episodes are of volunteer tutors and learners from the different programs we offer.

The Adult Literacy program offers four programs our Adult Basic Literacy program, Grassroots ESL, Leamos and Inspired Citizenship. If you would like to become a volunteer or are in need of our services please contact Arlene Calderon acalderon@azusaca.gov or call 626-812-5266.

OC Public Libraries Launches Back-to-School Events To Support Distance Learning

OC Breeze:
9.19.2020

With school looking different this year, OC Public Libraries’ literacy program, OC READ / Families for Literacy (OC READ), will be launching a series of Back-to-School events to support distance learning.

“The County understands the need for literacy and family engagement are important in building a foundation for learning,” said Chairwoman Michelle Steel, Second District Supervisor. “The goal of the Back-to-School events is to help support the community and encourage a culture of reading and learning for the entire family.”

OC READ offers literacy assistance to adults and their families, and the Back-to-School events are aimed to promote literacy and help create “home libraries” to support student learning.

“Distance learning has been challenging for many parents and students,” said Vice Chairman Andrew Do, First District Supervisor. “Now more than ever, it is important that we provide essential support services to our communities through our local county libraries.”

The Back-to-School events will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the parking lot at the following library locations and dates:

Westminster Library: Tuesday, September 22

La Palma Library: Wednesday, September 23

Stanton Library: Thursday, September 24

Garden Grove Main Library: Tuesday, September 29

Garden Grove Chapman Library: Wednesday, September 30

La Habra Library: Thursday, October 1

“These Back-to-School events are part of the creative community outreach efforts OC Public Libraries is initiating to ensure they stay connected with their users,” said Supervisor Donald Wagner, Third District.

The Back-to-School events will include free books and crafts provided by OC Public Libraries staff to families while they remain safely in their vehicles.  READ MORE ➤➤

State Propositions
Propositions are proposed laws presented to the public to vote on. Propositions can make new laws, change existing laws, and sometimes they change California’s Constitution. They can be placed on the ballot by people who collect
enough voter signatures or by state lawmakers (the California Legislature).

A proposition passes and becomes law
if it receives more than 50 percent YES votes.

Propositions 14 through 24 are “initiatives.”
For an initiative:
A YES vote means that you support the way the proposition would change things.
A NO vote means that you want to leave things the way they are now.

Proposition 25 is a “referendum,” which asks voters to decide on a law that was already passed.
For a referendum:
A YES vote means that you support the law and want to keep it.
A NO vote means you do not want the law to go into effect.

There are 12 state propositions in this election.

The way it is now:
What Prop would do if it passes:

Brawley Library ▬ Services Partially Return ▬ Adult & Family Literacy

Services Partially Return For Brawley Library
Imperial Valley Press: 9.03.2020 BY Vincent Osuna

Library services will partially return here after the City Council unanimously approved a resolution on Tuesday.

In order to finish with a balanced fiscal year 2020-2021 budget — a budget heavily impacted by COVID-19 costs — the council voted in July to not fund any library services until after year’s end.

However, that changed with Tuesday’s vote.

Locals can now check out books via curbside pickup from the library’s Main Street branch. The library’s adult and family literacy services have also returned. Both the Main Street and Del Rio buildings remain closed to public access.

The $51,479 in funding for the pickup and literacy programs was appropriated into the fiscal budget from donations and grants.

The group Brawley Library Friends donated $4,000 to fund the pickup program.

This part-time employee will work under the supervision of library director Marjo Mello. Since the city conducted its COVID budget cuts, Mello has been the only staff at the library. She is also currently the city’s interim parks and recreation director.  READ MORE ➤➤

Camarena Library ▬ Meet Our Tutors: Mark Hurych

Meet Our Tutors: Mark Hurych

Mark Hurych on the Challenges of Tutoring - Camarena Memorial Library

Oh boy. OK, maybe it is a challenge to get me to shut up once I get rolling. I don't think tutoring or teaching is challenging.

Let me explain. Raising a child to be kind and considerate, that's challenging, especially if you are trying to put food on the table and keep everybody healthy.

Dealing with a child with health issues in early life? (I've been there.) That qualifies as challenging.

I challenge myself when it comes to education. I've defined it as something completely different from schooling. Most of what typically goes on in K thru PhD is schooling, in my opinion. Getting schooled is common and it expresses the usual way of operating schools.

Taking, yes that's right I say "taking," an education is entirely different. When I ask myself a question and treat that question the same way you might treat "Where are my damn keys?" when you're on your way to work, when I ask myself a question in that way I begin to educate myself. No one can educate me. They can write a book, or write to me, they can send me a message, they can help me find my damn keys, sometimes, but the motivation to ask and answer is mine and mine alone.  READ MORE ➤➤
