Downey Library :: Customers And Staff Look Forward To New Beginnings

At The Downey Library, Customers And Staff Look Forward To New Beginnings
Downey Patriot: 3.19.2019 by Lorine Parks

Under a bright blue sky, when the trees around the Downey City Library are about to put forth green buds and leaves, a party was going on. The amazing blue ribbon library staff had invited kids and their parents, and had balloons and Spin The Wheel Games of chance with candy and books and puzzles as prizes. Finger painting on hither-to untouchable white walls.

And it almost looked like business as usual. In the Friends’ Used Book Room, sales were brisk. Book lover Mitch proudly held up his catch of the day, Marcella, one of Johnny Gruelle’s Raggedy Ann’s stories, Volunteer Marcia toted up his purchases while his wife Joy stood by, ready to pay.

But the Library is about to close for 15 months, and this new beginnings party was to celebrate the new phase of life for this beloved Downey institution.

Claudia took time from her busy schedule to show us how so many Downey organizations will be proxy-hosting for the library. Literacy program tutoring, which is near and dear to Claudia’s heart, is every Tuesday and Thursday from 1 to 2 pm at the First Baptist Church. Adult Communication Class will meet Mondays at 11 am at the Downey Women’s Club.

The Library’s book discussion club, Booked For Lunch, which has 20 or so active members, will meet Thursdays at 10:30 am at the First Baptist Church.  Summer reading shows will be scheduled on Mondays in June and July at the Downey Theatre.  Impressive.

“The renovation gives library staff an opportunity to pause,” Ben said, “and rethink how we work and what we offer. The construction gives us time to develop these programs.”  READ MORE >>

Downey Library :: Closes Saturday For Renovations :: Literacy & Most Programs Will Continue

Downey Library closes Saturday but most programs will continue
Downey Patriot: 3.14.2019 by Eric Pierce

The Downey City Library will close Saturday as part of an extensive renovation that will take 15 months to complete.

When the library re-opens June 2020, it will be as a “true 21st Century public learning environment, furthering its mission to ignite a community of creative and critical thinkers,’” city officials said.

Construction is slated to begin in June. Plans call for a reconfiguration of interior spaces, new interior finishes, new book and data storage furniture, installation of energy efficient lighting, completion of ADA improvements, new doors and signage, and new exterior paint.

Most library programs will continue at off-site locations during the renovation:
Literacy program tutoring is every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church

Literacy book discussions are Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church

The library also has other scheduled events:

A volunteer recognition luncheon is set for Saturday, April 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Rio Hondo Event Center;

National Library Week will be celebrated April 8 at the space center, with a children’s event from 4-5 p.m. and an author visit from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Downey Library :: Library Volunteers Thanked With Brunch

Downey Library Volunteers

Thanked With Brunch
Downey Patriot: 12.10.2018 by Lorine Parks

“Volunteers make the library what it is,” said Claudia Daley, literacy coordinator who heads the Children’s Room as well as supervises the volunteer programs at the Downey City Library.

She’s usually right, but this time Claudia was wrong: she is what makes the library what it is, a warm and welcoming community center. Just ask anyone who is involved, for example, in the Adult Literacy Tutoring Program, teaching adults to read, often in a second language. Claudia trains the volunteers for six weeks in phonetics, before they meet their pupils.

Some of these volunteers have been tutoring for years, and that means a serious commitment of time on a regular basis every week.

Downey Beat: 5.29.2017 by Tammye McDuff

Laptop Anytime is an innovative special dispensing checkout kiosk for laptop and tablets which was officially opened at the Downey Library in May.

The Company was co-founded by Matthew Buscher and Jonathan Ruttenberg with the vision of giving back to the community via convenient on-demand access to full-function laptop computers.

Working with a local broadband company, the kiosk can dispense devices per ATM-style technology, in this case if a Downey Library card. With the addition of the new 18 laptops, the Library now offers up to 36 computers for public use.

Adult Literacy Awareness Month - Downey Library - Escondido Library

Adult Literacy Awareness Month
September Spotlight
on SCLLN Literacy Programs

Downey City Library – Adult Literacy

The Downey City Library is committed to helping people learn how to read better. If you understand English, are over eighteen years old, and need help reading you may contact the Adult Literacy program for an assessment. Then once a week for an hour and a half you will meet with a tutor at the library who will teach you to read. The student may determine the day and time they would like to be tutored.

Escondido Public Library Literacy Program

The Escondido Public Library Literacy Services has been in existence since 1990. One in four adults cannot read and over 500,000 struggle with reading in San Diego County. We assist English speaking learners in achieving their goals based on individual needs.

Downey Library - September tabbed as literacy month

September tabbed as literacy month
Downey Patriot: 9.19.08 by Henry Veneracion

Downey Mayor Dave Gafin last week proclaimed the month of September 2008 as Literacy Month.

The proclamation is premised, he said, on the following considerations:

1) More than 27 % of adults in the Los Angeles area are capable of reading only simple words and sentences.

2) Literacy issues severely impact the lives of families in the area of work, school and their full participation in all the benefits of Downey residents.

3) Volunteers in the Downey City Library Adult Literacy Program give of themselves to help students reach their goals by providing free help in the areas of basic reading and writing skills.

“I urge fellow citizens to learn more about the importance of literacy and to become involved with literacy in our community,” he said.

Downey Library - Library Visit: Nessas Blog

LIBRARY VISIT
Nessas Blog: June 20, 2008

Downey City Library
11121 Brookshire Ave.
Downey, CA 90241

At first sight, The Downey City Library may seem like an unfunded and unused resource for the City’s residents, or at the least some sort of mecca for the local High School youth. Located across from Downey High School, and sandwiched in the parking lot between City Hall and Performing Arts Center, the one-story building is quite a gem inside.

Upon entrance of the sliding front doors is a small collection of Karen and Richard Carpenters’ memorabilia. I knew the famous two were from the City of Downey, but didn’t realize they were involved so much in their community. The small tribute to them was nice to see.

Across from the display is the impressive Circulation Desk. Impressive I guess in its rounded counter top and staffed with friendly and helpful personnel.
. . . . . . . . . . . . .
A couple things that may go unnoticed are the quaint Friends of the Library bookstore and the Literacy Office/literacy programs. The bookstore sells both new and used books, magazines, videos, nick-knacks, and a good selection of reasonably priced greeting cards. The store’s contributions go to help fund certain library equipment and programs. The literacy office is used for adult literacy and is run by a full-time staff member that coordinates literacy volunteers to help promote reading for adults. READ MORE

Downey Library - Literacy Month 2007

More on Literacy Month: Donna's update: I spent Monday evening at the Downey Public Library talking about My California with a very enthusiastic group that included many of the city's volunteer reading tutors.

Librarian Claudia Dailey mentioned a surprising statistic: that 27 percent of adults in Los Angeles County are not fully literate. So Claudia and her wonderful band of volunteers spend countless hours all year long helping other adults improve their reading skills.

I'm delighted that the library's tutors and their students are all diving into the narrative travel stories in the My California anthology. And I can't think of a better way to inspire people to read than sharing the work of these 27 great writers.
