An Altadena Library District trustee has been awarded the California Library Association’s President’s Award for her contributions to libraries and literacy, the library announced Thursday.

Katie Clark, who serves as president of the Board of Trustees, has been named the recipient of the honor, the Altadena Library District said in a written statement.

“[She] is a central leader in the community of Altadena whose vision and tireless commitment to libraries have created a legacy of long-term, positive impact that will provide critical library services for Altadena for decades to come,” the statement said.

The CLA President’s Award recognizes “outstanding contributions, leadership, and achievement in support of California libraries by a Trustee, Friend, Elected Official, or other layperson who has given his or her time and talents to further the advancements of California libraries,” the statement added.  READ MORE ➤➤

I enrolled for this program about two and a half years ago as a learner. At first, I felt lonely and separated from the community and people around me but step by step I found myself more involved, more active, and more confident. It happened with the help of selfless people who worked tirelessly, with dedication and obligation to prepare an encouraging ambiance for learners like me. They are wonderful volunteer tutors, instructors, and professional staff.

I’m writing to share a bit of my personal story and experience at the Literacy Program of the Newport Beach Central Library.

In 2017, I arrived to the US from Venezuela to reunite with my family. Even though I was 62 years old, this was a new beginning for me. My first limitation was that I spoke little English, so I enrolled in some of the Literacy Program classes: News You Can Use, Idioms, Grammar and others of the Newport Beach Central Library.

At the same time i was continuing my studies, so recently i receive my GED Certificate

I love being a tutor for the Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy program. I have had the privilege of working with several learners over the last seven years. The students are hard-working, enthusiastic, and dedicated to advancing. Each week the time spent with the learner flies by. We have such a good time. Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy

The Mission of Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy is to develop the literacy skills of adults to empower them to achieve greater success in their lives - at home, at work and in the community.

Since its inception in 1986, Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy has offered free, one-on-one tutoring and small group classes in basic literacy, to adults who live or work in the Newport Beach area.  The program is open to adults, over 18 years-of-age, who are either native English speakers with low literacy skills or those who learned English as a second language.

New Learner Orientation - Online

For those interested in joining the Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy program as a learner, the first step is to attend one of our quarterly orientations. Pre-registration is required and no one will be admitted without a reservation.

Tutor Orientation and Training

Tutors are required to complete online orientation and attend tutor training. Orientation must be completed before attending the training sessions. Online orientations can be taken at any time.

Please be aware that when you take the Online Tutor Orientation (approximately 20 minutes), you must complete and submit the online application at the end of the orientation in order to be scheduled for one of our Tutor Training sessions.

Monica Chapa Domercq, Oceanside Public Library

CLA: 2020

Monica Chapa-Domercq is Principal Librarian of the Oceanside Public Library and manages reference services, public programming and collection development for adults. She recently began overseeing the READS Literacy program. She implements community conversations to inclusively inform development of locally relevant programs and services. As an active participant in the cultural life of Oceanside, Monica strengthens bonds by creating partnerships and collaborating with local leaders while serving on committees for cultural celebrations and festivals.

=This year, her team was the recipient of the Book to Action grant from the California Center for the Book, and she served on the ‘One Book, One San Diego’ Selection Committee. She has directed five National Endowment for the Arts ‘Big Read’ grants for the Library, and will be working on the Library’s sixth such community-wide read in February/March 2020.

One award will be given out in 2020. The Outstanding Librarian in Support of Literacy Award recipient will receive one year free individual CLA membership and will be honored at the CLA annual conference.  Additionally, Grass Roots Press will give the recipient's library $350 of materials of the recipient's choice to support adult literacy.

3 Adult Literacy Students In Redlands Honored For Their Writing

The cornerstones of literacy are reading comprehension and effective writing. Over the past two years, the Redlands Adult Literacy Program has offered tutor training and learner workshops to help learners develop stronger writing skills. The focus on writing led to 10 adult learners from the Redlands Adult Literacy Program entering into the Writer-to-Writer Challenge, sponsored by the Southern California Library Literacy Network (SCLLN). 

The SCLLN annual Writer-to-Writer Challenge invites adult learners throughout Southern California to write a letter to an author, living or dead, whose book has inspired them. This year, 95 adult learners from the Southern California region submitted letters to the challenge. Literacy coordinators screened the letters and selected the top five in each of four categories. Panels of adult learners then judged the top letters and selected one winner and two runners-up for each level of writing.

The Redlands Adult Literacy Program is happy to announce that three adult learners, Marisela Casillas, Maria Hernandez, and Tanya Jauregui, earned runner-up recognition from SCLLN.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, however, the awards ceremony that would have recognized these learners has been postponed. The Redlands Adult Literacy Program acknowledges the achievement of all adult learners who submitted writing to the challenge and celebrates the three runners-up from Redlands.

Here is what the awardees said they had gained from their experience:

Marisela Casillas
Casillas read the book “Seedfolks” and wrote a letter to author Paul Fleischman. “Seedfolks” was the first book Casillas had read on her own. She chose to write the author because she could relate to the characters in the book.



Maria Hernandez
Hernandez entered the challenge with her letter to Stephanie Sammartino McPherson, reflecting upon the book “Peace and Bread” about the life of Jane Addams. Hernandez was moved by the compassion Jane Addams felt for the poor, especially children and immigrants. Hernandez’s mother shared Jane Addams’ compassion for others and passed this along to her daughter.

Tanya Jauregui
Jauregui read Michelle Obama’s “Becoming” and wrote, “… you gave me courage to find my voice and speak louder for the Adult Literacy Program … I need to keep using my voice to advocate for such an amazing program.”  READ MORE ➤➤

Mariana Boliarova, Adult Learner in LEAF Program, Won Southern California Library Literacy Network's "Writer to Writer"

Mariana Boliarova, an adult learner in the Library's LEAF (Literacy Education for Adults & Families) program, won the Southern California Library Literacy Network's "Writer to Writer" contest with this letter to Sandra Cisneros. She shared her accomplishment with acclaimed author Cisneros and received this heartfelt response. Congrats to Mariana and her tutor Jialing Wang!

SCLLN Writer to Writer Awards ◯ 2019

SCLLN Writer to Writer Awards   2019

We are excited to announce the winners and runners-up for the 2019 Writer to Writer Challenge!  We had a great response—95 entries—and the quality of the letters was amazing!

We are so proud of all the learners who wrote letters.  Each letter was a beautiful expression of the learner’s thoughts and feelings.  The ones selected as winners and runners-up most closely met the contest criteria, but as one coordinator said, every letter had its own “pizzazz.”

Please join other writers, tutors, coordinators and their guests at our conference lunch presentation on Saturday, March 21, at the Holiday Inn Buena Park

The winners and runners-up will each receive a cash prize and a certificate, and all letter writers will receive a certificate of participation.

We encourage all coordinators to invite and sponsor all your writers and their tutors for this special event.

The registration fees are only $15 for learners and $35 for tutors/staff (early bird, SCLLN member) and are an appropriate use of CLLS grant funding.

Inviting your Writer to Writer participants would be an excellent way to recognize our writers and their tutors.  Congratulations to all our letter writers!

At the Stanislaus County Library in Modesto, California, Olga Cardenas makes it her mission to deliver literacy programs, regardless of language or economic barriers.

It is why she received a 2016 I Love My Librarian Award.  Blessed with the ability to communicate in English and Spanish, she reaches families in Stanislaus County burdened with extreme poverty and facing cultural barriers.  Cardenas, who was nominated by the Friends of the Modesto Library,  holds the key these families need to unlock the potential for unlimited opportunities for their children.

As the Youth Services Outreach Librarian, she reaches out to parents in their communities, their workplaces and their houses of worship. Her outreach efforts have also led her to forge partnerships between the library and businesses, service organizations and schools.  WATCH 01:47

In the United States, right now we are helping 10% of the people who need help in learning how to read and speak English. We at VALUEUSA strongly believe that this is an opportunity to help the rest of the 90%, so we need you to help share this information, verbally because non-readers get the majority of our information by word of mouth.

We ask you to pass this information on to other programs and more importantly with adults who need to learn. We are not looking for you to do reports, get information, or collect data on anybody. All we are asking for is for you to get these free learning apps into the hands of the individuals who needs these skills, so they can make life better for themselves and their families.

So, raise your voice and take action now, from April 1 to August 30, 2019.

If you download these apps then, they will be free to use for one year. We are asking you to share it with the students in programs and anyone on the waiting list. Ask them to pass it on to anybody they think can benefit from these learning apps in any way. =Nearly 36 million adults in the U.S. lack basic literacy, yet only approximately 10% access educational services. The goal of the $1 million Adult Literacy XPRIZE Communities Competition is to expand access to adult education technology tools. XPRIZE’s mission is to empower millions of adult learners to acquire the skills they need to advance their education, find better work, or simply read a bedtime story to their children.

VALUEUSA wants your help to get this brochure and these apps in the hands of non-readers, plus verbally tell them about it. And give them a chance to learn and acquire the skills that they have no other way of getting. VALUEUSA wishes you to give us a hand and share your voice with all that will listen; let them know about the apps and give them the codes to begin!
