Newport Beach Library :: International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day :: Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy
Literally Speaking: July/August 2017

More than 780 million people worldwide (nearly two-thirds of whom are women) do not know how to read and write. International Literacy Day, traditionally observed each year on September 8, focuses attention on worldwide literacy needs.

Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy hosts an International Literacy Day (ILD) event at the Newport Beach Public Library, highlighting the tremendous strides our adult learners have made in reaching their goals. It is a day of celebration as tutors, learners and special guests share dishes from their home countries and come together to honor literacy program participants.

The adult leaner who exemplifies the mission of the program, is honored as the Rochelle Hoffman Memorial Award winner. This award, established in memory of Rochelle Hoffman, a dedicated tutor who passed away in 2004, is presented each year by Rochelle Hoffman’s daughters, Renee and Risa.

Another special part of the day is the presentation of the book In Our Own Words, which is a collection of stories, essays and poems written by the learners of the program.

It is our way of recognizing the efforts of volunteers and the progress of our adult learners. By improving literacy skills, we strengthen our community, and what better way is there to applaud these dedicated people than by supporting their efforts!  READ MORE @

Beaumont Library :: Stories from the Porch-Building a World of Books

Stories from the Porch-Building a World of Books
Patch/Banning-Beaumont: 9.03.2017 by Luren Dickinson

Join Beaumont Library for its 8th annual “Stories from the Porch – Building a World of Books” program from 10 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, September 23, in celebration of International Literacy Day.

The program encourages community leaders, community members, literacy volunteers, library staff and/or adult learners to read their favorite children’s book from the “front porch” of the library. Readers may bring their own book or read one we supply, or tell a story, read a poem, sing, dance, or play an instrument.

The program will draw attention to the problem of low literacy and illiteracy among adults (1 in 5 adults in the United States has low literacy skills). This means they are unable to complete job applications, read notes home from school, or administer medication properly.  READ MORE @

Redlands Library :: Author Francisco Jiménez Speaks in Redlands about ‘The Migrant Experience’

Author Francisco Jiménez speaks in Redlands about ‘The Migrant Experience’
Redlands Daily Facts: 9.17.2017 by Diane Shimota, Adult Literacy Coordinator-A.K. Smiley Library

The Redlands City Council proclaimed Sept. 7 as Adult Literacy Day in the city of Redlands. The proclamation included the finding that adults in Redlands seek to improve their literacy skills with the Redlands Adult Literacy Program so that they may get a job or advance in their employment, help their children in school and work toward their own higher education.

The council also commended the efforts of volunteers and community partners whose support is vital to the program.

To celebrate Adult Literacy Day, the community gathered at the Contemporary Club Sept. 7 to hear Francisco Jiménez, author of “The Circuit: Stories From the Life of a Migrant Child” and its three sequels, “Breaking Through,” “Reaching Out” and “Taking Hold: From Migrant Childhood to Columbia University.” The common theme in these four books is the transformative power of education.

Each book represents a different stage of Jiménez’s education and describes the struggles Jiménez faced and conquered.

Before Jiménez’s talk on “The Migrant Experience: A Personal Story,” many participants in the Redlands Adult Literacy Program enjoyed a special opportunity to greet him at the Lincoln Memorial Shrine and share a bit of their personal histories with him. Some said that his story is similar to the history of their own families, and others connected with his passion for learning and his struggles to become educated.

Ana Alcantar, a learner in the program, said about meeting Francisco Jiménez, “It was a magical moment that I will treasure forever.”  READ MORE @

Huntington Beach Library :: International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day
Open Doors: September 2016

International Literacy Day (ILD) shines a spotlight on global literacy needs, which goes hand in hand with the International Literacy Association's mission: literacy for everyone, everywhere. ILA advocates for a literate world, supports literacy educators and leaders, and celebrates the power of literacy. Founded as the International Reading Association, the International Literacy Association (ILA) has worked to enhance literacy instruction through research and professional development for 60 years. Some of its advances made for literacy include:

• Honing the skills of thousands of literacy educators through our practical research journals, publications, professional development, conferences, and advocacy efforts
• Publishing over 900 books on issues in literacy education
• Developing and managing dozens of global literacy projects across the developing world
• Building a community of educators through our network of councils and affiliate groups
• Advocating before legislative and regulatory bodies for resources to enhance students' skills
• Setting standards for educators and assessment that are now used throughout the field
• Co-producing ReadWriteThink -a widely used website resource for peer reviewed lesson plans

As the champion of a vibrant literacy community, we recognize the importance of working together to drive sustainable change and have great expectations for the next 60 years-and beyond.

Together, we are the future of literacy, and the future is now.

Newport Beach Library :: International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day :: Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy
Literally Speaking: September/October 2015

Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy proudly held their annual event to celebrate adult literacy and the program participants.  The International Literacy Day event invites the NMPL family of tutors, learners and volunteers to come together with members of the community to celebrate adult literacy. On September 10, 2015, a gathering of nearly 150 guests listened to heartwarming stories, inspiring speeches and enjoyed a delicious selection of food from many different countries from all over the world provided by the adult learners.

Renee Hoffman Heath and Risa Hoffman for keeping their
mother's legacy going by allowing us to continue the Hoffman
Award for our learners. This year's winners are Maja Kuta and
Carmen Caicedo who, with their tutors Tanya Gulati and Allan
                                            Segal, accomplished some amazing goals.

Advisory Board member Roman Darmer welcomed guests and spoke of the importance of literacy.  Roman introduced Newport Beach Public Library Director Tim Hetherton, who emphasized the importance of literacy and libraries.

Newport Beach Mayor Ed Selich took to the podium to present a special proclamation designating September as Literacy Awareness month.

Adult learner, Crystal Huang, shared her experience of traveling with her family from Taipei, Taiwan in search of a better education environment for her son. Her son has since attained a postgraduate degree. Crystal joined the Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy program in early 2015 and aspires to one day work at an orphanage and help others.

Literacy Coordinator Cherall Weiss then introduced Risa Hoffman and Renee Hoffman-Heath, daughters of the late Rochelle Hoffman for whom the Memorial Award was named. They spoke of their mother’s dedication and love of tutoring.  They introduced the two winners of this year’s Hoffman Award.
-Ms. Hoffman introduced volunteer tutor, Ms. Tanya Gulati, who spoke to the audience about her learner, Maja Kuta’s tremendous accomplishments. Maja graciously thanked Tanya and expressed her difficulties with dyslexia and how NMPL has helped her reach her goals. She spoke about her artistic passion and how the program has assisted her in pursuing her dreams. Maja signed a deal as an artist for a comic book, and is grateful to be given such an extraordinary opportunity.

Next, the guests were introduced to tutor Alan Segal and his learner Carmen Caicedo, who is originally from Venezuela. She entered the program at a 2nd grade reading level and through her hard work is now at a 5th grade level. NMPL has enabled her to be confident in her abilities to speak and write in English.  Carmen shared her new goal with the group: to become a nurse.

Following the speakers, Cherall Weiss closed with a reminder that illiteracy is all around us and it is thanks to the many volunteers that, day by day, people’s lives are being changed for the better.

Each attendee was presented with a copy of In Our Own Words, a collection of stories and essays written by learners in the Literacy Program. They were also given a key to remind them to help ‘unlock the potential.’
Guests enjoyed a delicious fruit and cheese arrangement donated by Bristol Farms and exciting new beverages donated by drinkNeuro.

Greg Lucas, State librarian to speak at annual UOP literacy event

State librarian to speak at annual UOP literacy event

Greg Lucas, who oversees the California State Library’s vast collection, from historical documents to digitized books, will be the featured speaker Thursday at University of the Pacific’s 2015 Beyond Our Gates Dialogue, “Connections and Common Ground in Literacy.”

“People build libraries and libraries build community,” Lucas wrote recently in Western City Magazine. “Anyone who believes libraries are a withered vestige from sepia-tinted yesteryear hasn’t been inside their neighborhood branch lately.”

On any given day at a public library, parents may be singing with their toddlers at story time, nurturing the early literacy skills young children need to become strong readers. Immigrants may be practicing English while high-schoolers practice for the SAT. Job seekers may be filling out employment applications and seniors may be opening their first email accounts.

The Dialogue is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, at the San Joaquin County Office of Education’s Wentworth Education Center, 2707 Transworld Drive in Stockton. The event is free and open to the public.

“Libraries connect people to resources—and to each other,” said Jennifer Torres Siders, community relations director for University of the Pacific. “We’re working closely with our local libraries to improve early literacy in San Joaquin County, and we want to help more residents.  READ MORE !
