Placentia Library Adult Literacy ▬ Meet Our Learners and Tutors

Placentia Library Adult Literacy Meet Our Learners and Tutors

Placentia Library Adult Literacy
Literacy eXPLORE: Spring/Summer 2021

Isha shares her experience tutoring her learner, Marisela:

As a college student involved in creative writing, poetry, and teaching English literacy, I strive to make every meeting with my student Maricela very engaging and inspiring.

When Maricela first joined the library’s literacy program, she was eager and ready to dive straight into goal-oriented lessons, go page by page in the workbook, and learn flashcards. Though this progressed well, I realized that introducing her to some light reading, poetry, and current events could be a major breakthrough for her understanding of English. With this in mind, we started planning out all the activities we could do together on Zoom all while staying safe at home.

While preparing for her citizenship exam and interview, Maricela has been especially interested in the current issues regarding the US election and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the topics that made headlines this past year were not always uplifting. Together, Maricela and I chose to balance this by splitting our time between reading the news, and reading a short story or poem that reflects a positive outlook on life and learning.  READ MORE ➤➤

Placentia Library ◯ Meet Our Learners And Tutors

Meet Our Learners And Tutors
Placentia Library Explore: Sep 2019-Feb 2020

Jan shares her experience tutoring her learner, Bao: A quote from Winston Churchill sums up my experience with my adult learner, Bao – “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”

As a former teacher and administrator, I have found that a student’s attitude is an important determiner of future success. From our first meeting three months ago, it was evident that Bao was a determined and committed learner. Her desire to strengthen her communication skills, both in writing and speaking, has guided our weekly learning sessions.

To achieve these goals, we have discussed current events, increased knowledge of content vocabulary and integrated writing skills through the reading of a weekly newsletter, “News for You.” In addition, we are enjoying reading a novel that supports Bao’s comprehension, vocabulary, writing and reading fluency. Connecting her prior knowledge and life experiences with her learning goals has allowed her to make great strides towards the achievement of her goals.

The Placentia Library’s adult literacy program has allowed me to re-connect with my passion for teaching and share my experience with an enthusiastic and dedicated adult.

Placentia Library :: Spotlight On Literacy

SPOTLIGHT ON LITERACY: Meet Our Learners & Tutors

Sumi is a prolific reader from South Korea. Her love of literature lead her to sign up for the adult literacy program. Her goal is to improve her English to be able to read classic literature. We are working towards achieving this goal by reading simplified versions of classic novels, learning new words, and completing engaging lessons on reading and writing.

In Sumi’s words, “Thank you for the Placentia Library’s adult literacy program that gave me the pleasure of learning English with such a great teacher. The literacy program has had a big impact on my life.” Sumi is tutored by Raul, a recent graduate from CSUF. Raul combines his education and skills to help Sumi build her reading and writing skills. They meet every week for an hour and a half.

In Raul’s own words, “The Placentia Literacy Program has helped me develop into a better teacher so that I can be successful in my career as an ESL instructor and has given me a way to be more connected and involved in my community.”  READ MORE >>

Placentia Library - Library Celebrates Seuss Centennial

Library celebrates Seuss Centennial:
Party adds birthday cake to the menu with green eggs and ham.
The Orange County Register: March 4, 2004 by Veronica Rodriguez

With their mouths full of green eggs and ham, kids of all ages intently listened to the words of Dr. Seuss during the Seussical Centennial celebration Sunday in the Placentia Library.

The hourlong event marked the late Theodor ``Ted'' Seuss Geisel's 100th birthday and his legacy, as the famed author Dr. Seuss, for his work as a writer and illustrator of 44 children's books.

``This (event) is just an outreach for the community to get involved and understand the brains of a tremendous children's book writer,'' said Jim Roberts, literacy coordinator for Families for Literacy.

The group hosted the event, in celebration of Dr. Seuss' March 2 birthday, which coincided with the annual Read Across America event.

Families for Literacy members and volunteers were among those who read some of Dr. Seuss' most notable books, including ``Green Eggs and Ham,'' The Cat in the Hat'' and ``Hooray for Diffendoofer Day!'' to a crowd of almost 100 guests Sunday.

As readers turned pages, the children's curious voices interrupted storytellers with comments and often questioned ``Why?''

This interaction, according to Diane Martlaro, a library volunteer for four years, was a symbol of children's innocence and interest in the words of Dr. Seuss and of tremendous gratification for her service.

``When kids are asking questions, you know they're listening. They're interested. They're excited; and that is awesome,'' Martlaro said.

San Clemente resident Gloria Paoletti said she was baby-sitting and decided to bring her Placentia granddaughters -- Natalia, 11, Adriana, 9, Daniela, 6, and Katarina Balgojevic, 5 -- to the program. The oldest three are Golden Elementary School students.

``They are just enjoying the event thoroughly. ... They have had more than one serving of green eggs and ham.''

``No, two or three servings,'' interrupted Natalia as her grandmother giggled. ``Daniela had one and a half.''

Of course, the party couldn't end without a birthday cake.

Volunteers cut the cake and each child received a free copy of ``Gerald McBoing Boing,'' to encourage the continued exploration of Dr. Seuss' world full of entertainment and imagination.

Four-year-old Eliza Bruner of Placentia gets a front-row seat for the Seussical Centennial party Sunday, a Family for Literacy program at the Placentia Library. About 100 people marked the 100th anniversary of the author's birth.

Caitlyn Schrepfer, 7, of Placentia is wowed by a Dr. Seuss book being read Sunday at the Family for Literacy's Seussical Centennial at the Placentia Library.
