Glendora Library :: Great Trivia Challenge

Great Trivia Challenge 25
Glendora Library Literacy
February 25 :: 5 pm

Approximately 6000 adults living in the city of Glendora do not have the literacy skills required to independently manage daily activities at home and work. They are unable to achieve personal, educational, and professional goals.

It is highly likely that you know one of these adults with or without being aware of it. Adults with low literacy skills can be strategic at keeping this information hidden because it can be embarrassing, even shameful, to them. Many learn to compensate by listening effectively, observing carefully, memorizing efficiently, and devising ways to quietly depend upon others.

Glendora Library :: Help Mary Pat Dodson Continue Her Fight

Help Mary Pat Dodson continue her fight
Glendora, CA

Mary Pat has been a Literacy Coordinator for the community for over 12 years. She is a single parent with a 17 year old daughter. This last year Mary Pat was diagnosed with Autoimmune Hepatitis (persistent liver inflammation). Mary Pat was soon after diagnosed with Non Alcoholic Cirrhosis of the Liver, and is now in Liver Failure. She is currently on a waiting list for a liver transplant.

Mary Pat is physically unable to work the hours required for her job, and is currently on temporary un-paid leave, with no foreseeable income. Being that Mary Pat is a part-time employee she does not qualify for disability. Mary Pat is at the end of her financial rope right now and needs our help to get through the next 6 months. We are hosting this online fundraiser to try and raise $25,000.00 to help cover her living/medical expenses. Mary Pat has helped so many and given so much to our community we feel it's our privilege to help her in her time of need. Please take a moment and donate whatever you can, no amount is too small. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Glendora Library :: Great Trivia Challenge :: Feb 27

Glendora Library
February  27, 2016 :: 5 pm

The Great Trivia Challenge began in 1992 as a fundraising event to create an Adult Literacy program. Now it is a community-loved tradition that promotes friendly competition to support the Glendora Library. It is an exciting event in which teams, sponsored by local business and service organizations, compete against each other. Mr. Trivia, Thom Hill, asks a series of increasingly difficult trivia questions to determine a winner.

Glendora Library :: Parent and Teacher Phonics Workshop | Sep 26

Parent and Teacher Phonics Workshop
Glendora Public Library -- Bidwell Forum
September 26
9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Have you or your child ever read a word and thought, "Well, English is just crazy, that is a word that just has to be memorized?” If you have, we have good news for you: English is not crazy and there is a way to investigate words along with your child or students (dyslexic and non-dyslexic) to learn the true underlying structure, and never utter those words again!

You are invited to attend a Community Literacy Program on Structure Word Inquiry featuring Dr. Kelli Sandman-Hurley and Tracy Block-Zaretsky.  Dr. Sandman-Hurley is a published author and researcher of dyslexia and received her doctorate in Literacy with a specialization in reading and dyslexia from San Diego State University and the University of San Diego. Ms. Block-Zaretsky is a trained Special Education Advocate assisting parents and children through the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and 504Plan process and has tutored children and adults with learning disabilities for the past 18 years. Together, they formed the Dyslexia Training Institute in San Diego.

Presented jointly by the GlendoraAzusa, Covina and Monrovia Public Library Literacy programs, as well as Glendora Public Library Friends Foundation, this program is offered free to all community members, including teachers, parents, students and anyone interested in adult and family literacy.

•Learn to find the sense in English and “sight words”.
•Become a word detective by conducting word hypothesis and creating word sums.
•Learn about the interrelationship between morphology, etymology and phonology.

The Glendora Public Library is located at 140 S. Glendora Ave., Glendora CA 91741. To register for this program, please call the Library at 626-852-4891.

International Literacy Day: September 8

International Literacy Day kicks off Friday
Imperial Valley Press: 9.05.2012 by Celeste Alvarez

HOLTVILLE — As libraries across the nation prepare for International Literacy Day, Imperial County librarian Connie Barrington said she hopes to inspire others to take an interest in literacy during a celebration at the Imperial County Free Library, Holtville Meyer Memorial Branch here Friday.

“We hope to highlight literacy concerns in the Valley and encourage others to volunteer,” Barrington said.

The annual event will consist of several public readings ranging from children’s literature to more sophisticated literature, explained Barrington.

With the demand for teaching literacy in the Valley increasing, Barrington said she hopes the festivities will also motivate others to take an initiative within their own education and the education of their fellow neighbor.

“One of the most rewarding feelings I’ve experienced was as a tutor,” Barrington said.

Barrington said she hopes the festivities will bring about more volunteers to the literacy program and encourage individuals age 16 and older to volunteer and help make a difference in an individual’s life.

The free event is open to the public and is from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, with a special guest speaker reading a selection of their choice during the event.

“It’s important to celebrate literature,” she said.

Glendora Library - Brown's Plan Puts Adult Literacy Program in Jeopardy

Brown's Plan Puts Adult Literacy Program in Jeopardy: State money funds much of the free literacy program at the Glendora Public Library.
Glendora Patch: January 11, 2011 by Hazel Lodevico-To'o

They come to the Glendora Public Library to learn how to read. But for the 40 adults enrolled in the library’s Adult Literacy Program, the free program that has helped them learn basic reading skills could soon be on the chopping block.

Governor Jerry Brown unveiled a drastic plan yesterday that proposes to cut state spending by $12.5 billion to close a $25 billion shortfall. Among the items curtailed was $30.4 million in local library funding.

For the Glendora Public Library, 140 S. Glendora Ave., that means up to $70,000 of state funding that will be reduced or eliminated following implementation of Gov. Brown’s proposed plan. Much of that funding goes to the library’s Adult Literacy Program, which has offered free literacy training for adults for nearly 20 years.

“This is going to be a blow for us,” said Library Director Robin Weed-Brown. She said the reduced state funding puts even more strain on the library’s budget, adding that the library has already reduced employee hours and has cut 64 percent of its book budget over the last fiscal year. With the loss of state funding, the library may see further cuts to part-time staff.

Should the library eliminate the Literacy Program, it would be an unfortunate loss for the students and their families, said assistant director Anne Pankow.

“This would greatly impact their lives,” said Pankow. “Many of them are married, and they have children. We take for granted the ability to read, but it’s so crucial in our everyday lives.”

One part-time coordinator supervises and trains a group of volunteer tutors. Students enrolled in the program call and make individual appointments with their tutor.

Adult Literacy Awareness Month :: Glendale :: Glendora

Adult Literacy Awareness Month
September Spotlight
on SCLLN Literacy Programs

Glendale Public Library Adult Reading Program

Literacy is a fancy word for the ability to read and write--simple skills most of us learned as youngsters.m But there are many people who never mastered these skills. For someone who struggles to sound out letters and put them into words, the effort can be frustrating as well as embarrassing.
People who don't read well don't look different from anyone else. One out of every four people in the United States struggles to read, but they also raise families, go to work and participate in their communities.

The Glendale Public Library Literacy Department offers a unique approach to learning literacy skills. Our program combines basic instruction with the adult students' goals, making it possible for adults who struggle with reading to learn and use the tools necessary for life, family, job and pride. Almost anyone can learn to read. The enjoyment found in reading becomes the joy found in a journey, taking them anywhere they want to go.

Glendora Public Library

The GLENDORA READS! Literacy program offers free one-to-one tutoring for English speaking adults, age 16 or older, who are not in high school. Anyone who would like to read better or improve their reading and writing skills is welcome - all inquiries are kept confidential.
Contact the library's Literacy Office at (626) 852-4897.

Glendora Library - Glendora Trivia Challenge 2007

Glendora Trivia Challenge
San Gabriel Valley Tribune: March 21, 2007

Will Mike and Marcia Conway's team repeat or will we crown a new champion at the 15th annual Great Trivia Challenge set for March 23 at APU's Upper Turner Campus Center?

About 300 people are expected to watch and see.

This is the 15th year the Glendora Public Library Friends Foundation has held the Great Trivia Challenge.

Local businesses and service clubs have fun competing in a friendly competition. Thom Hill returns as master of ceremonies for the 15th year.

It is a fun event for the community and a wonderful way for the community to give to the Glendora Public Library, said Chris Cravens, Foundation office manager.

Vying for bragging rights as trivia champs are Certified Auto; Glendora Lions Club, last year's second-place winners; Glendora Rotary Club; Kiwanis Club of Glendora; Hughes Homes, Inc.; Glendora Kiwaniannes; Oakdale Memorial Park Mortuary; In-N-Out Burger; Antoine Sayegh, DDS; Littlepage Photography; White House Real Estate; Foundation for Glendora Unified School District; Azusa/Glendora Soroptimists; Heartland Mortgage; Southland Properties; Jan's Towing; Foothill Presbyterian Hospital; and Social Model Recovery Systems.

Teams have to come prepared to answer questions on any category: sports, movies, medicine, science, literature and current events. Judges are Clay Hess, Karen Babineau and Doris Blum.

Tickets are $10 if purchased at the Glendora Library Friends Book Loft or at the checkout desk (during regular library hours) and $12 if purchased at the door.

The ticket includes an extensive food buffet and the trivia challenge event. The food is provided by local restaurants.

Spaghetti Eddie's provides a tear-off coupon for either $7 or $10 on the ticket (which makes the ticket practically free and you get to support the library to boot.)

The goal is to raise $20,000, which will go to support library programs such as the adult literacy program, outreach programs to expectant and teen parents, summer reading clubs for children, teens and adults, author visits, book discussions and other cultural events.

The organizers would like to extend special thanks not only to the hard-working trivia challenge committee but also Spaghetti Eddie's, and all of the restaurants who donated food and all of their sponsors including Athens Services; Suncraft Development; Crestwood Communities; Pacific Western Bank; Monrovia Growers; Rain Bird Corporation; Candlelight Pavilion and Glendora Auto Centre Association.

Special thanks to the committee: Judi Rudd, Debbie Deal, Lynda Siminske, Debbie Schmidt and Pam Richards. These ladies have worked extremely hard to get sponsors, organize the food donors and get door prizes for the event.
