Orange County Library ▬ READ OC ▬ September Employee Of The Month

Employee Of The Month September

OCLP News: 9.25.2020

Stella is all about the public she serves. She has been especially helpful to her ESL patrons and has more than a few thriving Conversation groups. She herself, provides all the adult programming at her branch including multiple bookclubs and a monthly Writer's retreat. Stella was also instrumental in bringing Genealogy programming to OCPL and offered many of the programs herself.

Stella's creativity and sense of innovation, is best described in her efforts to keep the ESL classes going strong at her branch. Stella recognized the growing need for ESL in Lake Forest, as well as the need to keep the momentum going with the existing students. As soon as virtual book groups became available, she had her ESL classes Zooming away!

When bookclubs had to stop meeting due to COVID, Stella maintained communication with those members for whom the bookclub was the highlight of their month. One member who was so sad to move out of state, has now rejoined the group via Zoom. Simply put, Stella is an empathic, committed professional who is passionate about librarianship.  READ MORE ➤➤

OC Public Libraries Launches Back-to-School Events To Support Distance Learning

OC Breeze:
9.19.2020

With school looking different this year, OC Public Libraries’ literacy program, OC READ / Families for Literacy (OC READ), will be launching a series of Back-to-School events to support distance learning.

“The County understands the need for literacy and family engagement are important in building a foundation for learning,” said Chairwoman Michelle Steel, Second District Supervisor. “The goal of the Back-to-School events is to help support the community and encourage a culture of reading and learning for the entire family.”

OC READ offers literacy assistance to adults and their families, and the Back-to-School events are aimed to promote literacy and help create “home libraries” to support student learning.

“Distance learning has been challenging for many parents and students,” said Vice Chairman Andrew Do, First District Supervisor. “Now more than ever, it is important that we provide essential support services to our communities through our local county libraries.”

The Back-to-School events will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the parking lot at the following library locations and dates:

Westminster Library: Tuesday, September 22

La Palma Library: Wednesday, September 23

Stanton Library: Thursday, September 24

Garden Grove Main Library: Tuesday, September 29

Garden Grove Chapman Library: Wednesday, September 30

La Habra Library: Thursday, October 1

“These Back-to-School events are part of the creative community outreach efforts OC Public Libraries is initiating to ensure they stay connected with their users,” said Supervisor Donald Wagner, Third District.

The Back-to-School events will include free books and crafts provided by OC Public Libraries staff to families while they remain safely in their vehicles.  READ MORE ➤➤

About Book to Action
Book to Action is a framework that takes the basic book club concept and expands it to create a dynamic series of events for adults and intergenerational groups. Librarians work closely with a community partner to develop a series of programs. Community members read and discuss an engaging book on a current topic, attend author or speaker events, and put their new-found knowledge into action by participating in a community service project or civic engagement activity related to the book.  READ MORE ➤➤

English Language Learning Expert Robert Bouton McDougal Opens Free Adult Literacy Classes in Costa Mesa, CA
EIN News: 9.23.2019

The Robert McDougal English Language Institute is proud to announce the launch of a free series of ESL classes at the new library in Costa Mesa, CA. The classes will be offered to non-native English speakers and other community members free of charge beginning in the fall of 2019.

Classes will cover everyday English language essentials. Students will be expected to attend every class, as small group and paired work will be key to the course series. While courses will be focused primarily on everyday conversation, breakout seminars will cover public speaking, technology, manners and etiquette, emergency/crisis situations, confidence, nonverbal communication, pop culture terminology, and one “wild card” area of focus selected by the group of students.

“There are many English language learners in Costa Mesa,” Robert McDougal shares of the growing need for low-cost ESL classes in the area. “Additionally, Southern California is home to a diverse population, including immigrants and many low-income individuals and families. These courses will help community members learn together in a safe, supportive, and fun environment from qualified ESL instructors who have years of education and experience under their belt.”

The new Costa Mesa/Donald Dungan Library opened in May 2019, after the old Costa Mesa Technology Library closed. The new location, says McDougal, is in many ways the ideal spot for the new program.

“Libraries are essential to public health, education, community spirit, and well-being,” Robert Bouton McDougal says. “The new library in Costa Mesa is the perfect example of a community coming together around valuable free and low-cost resources. My team of ESL instructors is so proud to bring this service to the community.”

Robert Bouton McDougal is an experienced ESL instructor who has developed ELL/ESL curriculum for a number of schools and learning centers over the course of his decade of English language instruction. McDougal boasts both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in ESL pedagogy. He has worked with students of all ages as a classroom instructor, small group teacher, and private tutor to achieve their full potential in English fluency, confidence, and public speaking. Robert McDougal is also certified in TESOL instruction.

Robert Bouton McDougal will be delivering the classes with six other instructors beginning in October 2019. Interested participants ages 18 and over can sign up for classes now by heading to the form available at the Robert McDougal English Language Institute website. A similar series for non-native English speaking children and teens will be offered at the library in the spring.

Orange Co Library :: READ OC :: OC Public Libraries hosts its first Career Online High School graduation ceremony

OC Public Libraries hosts its first
Career Online High School graduation ceremony

On Thursday, June 13th, 2018 four Orange County residents earned their high school diploma through the Career Online High School (COHS) program. The COHS offers adults the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma, while gaining career skills in various employment fields. Gilbert Avila, of Orange, shared that he is a testament that it is never too late. After losing his father at the age of 15, Avila dropped out of high school to help his family financially. Now at 36, he has a high school diploma and will be enrolling at the community college in the fall. He thanked the program, its supporters and donors for giving him this opportunity.

For many adults, the decision to re-enter or enter an educational program can be challenging. Adults with work and family responsibilities must learn to balance various commitments to ensure that they are successfully advancing in their coursework. The COHS program addresses these challenges by offering students the opportunity to earn a diploma using an online platform where students study at their own pace, in their own environment, and on their own schedule. Students are able to graduate in as few as 4 to 6 months.

This project was made possible in part by OC Public Libraries, Gale (a part of Cengage Learning), the San Clemente Friends of the Library, and the California State Library.

OC Public Libraries will offer qualified community members the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and credentialed career certificate through Career Online High School, part of the world’s first accredited, private online school district. Career Online High School is specifically designed to reengage adults into the education system and prepare them for entry into post-secondary career education or the workforce.

OC Public Libraries will award up to 10 scholarships for Career Online High School to qualified learners looking to earn a high school diploma and advance their careers.

To be considered for the program, applicants must:

Be an adult aged 19 or over
Be a resident of Orange County
Have a library account in good standing.

For other SCLLN libraries offering the Career Online HS program,

Orange Co Library :: READ OC :: Dear Paige Turner, Planning Ahead

Dear Paige Turner, Planning Ahead
My learner and I will be taking some time off from tutoring due to our families’ summer plans.
How can I encourage him to keep reading and learning while we are on a break for a few weeks?
READ WRITES: Spring 2017

Dear Planning Ahead,

It’s not too early for you and your learner to create a summer learning calendar to confirm any plans for time off from your tutoring sessions due to summer activities or vacation plans.  You can add special learning opportunities and events to your calendar that you and your learner may want to explore, such as the special Summer Reading activities and events at your library, fun travel activities to use while traveling, and other special events in your community.  (Blank calendar templates can easily be found online to create your own summer learning calendars.)

Don’t forget to check out the special (and always popular) summer programs at your library!  Special events and activities make for an extra special summer that can take you around the world, or travel through time, or to make believe places...all without ever leaving home.

You and your learner can also create your own summer reading challenges, such as trying an online reading adventure with e-books and other fun online resources available through OC Public Libraries website.

If you and/or your learner will be taking a vacation, consider some fun ways to keep reading and writing until you get back together. You can send each other short greetings on post cards or through emails, or keep a summer journal to remember and share new reading or writing challenges.

There are also maps to explore, brochures to read, and photos to share, all of which are great sources for reading and writing when you both reconnect at your tutoring sessions in the library, or enjoy at home with family and friends as you share your summer adventures.

Remember, the LEA is an all season learning tool!  READ MORE @

Orange Co Library :: READ OC - Honors San Clemente & Heritage Park Libraries

OC READ Honors San Clemente & Heritage Park Libraries
READ WRITES: Summer 2016

OC READ has been grateful to receive the consistent support of all the branches and staff within the OC Public Libraries system, and each year honors a branch that has gone above and beyond in their support of literacy.  When the San Clemente Branch planned its major renovations and reopened last summer, Branch Manager Karen Wahl made sure to set aside space for a comfortable, private literacy center where tutors and learners could work together without worrying about the distractions and awkwardness of meeting in the public eye. Now the space is stocked with literacy materials and available for any tutor and learner who need it.

This year, OC READ also presented our first ever Outstanding Literacy Collection award to Heritage Park Library.  Branch Manager Cheryl Nakaji, Librarian Nadya Mircheva, Office Manager Catherine Clark and the entire branch team are strong supporters of literacy and the growing multicultural community that they serve.  The Irvine Heritage Park team seamlessly fields questions, patiently helps learners access the resources they need, and helps tutoring pairs find more quiet places to work at the busiest branch in the system. Last summer, former IHP librarians Jennifer Johnson and Julia Butler recognized a need to set aside space for a literacy and ESL collection that would be accessible to READ participants and the public.  They contacted READ about what materials would best support adult learners’ goals and lobbied their Friends for the funds to purchase these materials. In January, the nearly 100 book collection became a reality and is now housed in the section of the library that overlooks the charming Heritage Park pond. Many thanks to the entire Heritage Park team for making a refuge for literacy.  READ MORE @

Orange Co Library - NEW READ/OC Literacy Collection at OCPL

NEW READ/OC Literacy Collection at OCPL
READ Writes: 12.2015

More than 500 new adult literacy books have been added to the regular OC Public Libraries circulating collection!

Unlike the materials in the literacy centers (which are still available for tutors and learners to check out via the “honors system”) these new titles are part of the regular OC Public Libraries catalog. That means they can be searched, checked out, requested, or reserved just like any other book in the library!

The new collection will be housed at the following branches:
Aliso Viejo
Costa Mesa
Dana Point
El Toro
Foothill Ranch
Fountain Valley
Garden Grove Regional
Irvine Heritage Park
Irvine Katie Wheeler
La Habra
Ladera Ranch
Laguna Niguel
Rancho Santa Margarita
San Clemente
San Juan Capistrano
Tustin
Westminster

Don’t live near one of these branches? Not to worry! You can place a hold and pick up the book at your nearest OCPL location.

To find books in the literacy collection, go the OCPL catalog  and select “Power Search”. In the “location” field, select “Literacy Materials”, and click “search”. You can then search for specific goal related topics (such as spelling, writing, money, health, parenting, employment, etc.) within the literacy results.

Coming soon: Even more new hi-lo fiction books available for your e-reader!

Orange Co Library :: READ/OC :: Celebration of Lifelong Learning Adventures

Reflections of a Magical Celebration of Lifelong Learning Adventures!
READ Writes: September 2015

Once again, the amazing creative and enthusiastic Friends of READ/ OC brought the magic of literacy, reading, and lifelong learning to life at the Annual Family Picnic and Appreciation Celebration!

Check out the inspiring learning efforts and accomplishments of READ/OC tutors and learners, along with the fantastic family picnic celebration created by the amazing Friends of READ/OC held at Craig Regional Park on June 13. Over the summer learners and tutors were not distracted in the forest of “everyday,” but explored and set goals to continue lifelong learning adventures throughout the year. We want to share some of the amazing learning achievements and celebrations of this amazing summer, especially this day in June of whimsical learning fun with great food, games and prizes, fantastic decorations and magical times with family and READ/OC Friends!

The Annual Family Picnic and Appreciation Celebration on June 13 was indeed a magical celebration of reading, new beginnings, and accomplishments! The extremely creative and dedicated Friends of READ/Orange County (FROC) transformed a group picnic area into a “literacy garden” of lifelong learning for READ/OC learners, tutors, and their families. It was also an opportunity to show appreciation for our literacy partners at OC Public Libraries, OC Community Resources, and many other friends of literacy throughout the Orange County community who have continued to encourage and promote literacy.  READ MORE !
