Redlands Library :: Celebrate Adult Learners’ Successes!

Celebrate Adult Learners’ Successes!
Redlands Reads: May 2019

Throughout the year learners use their new reading and writing skills to reach new goals. The following highlights recent achievements:

Thirty-nine learners submitted works for publication in the adult literacy anthology, Our Stories, A Collection of Writing, Volume 2. This anthology, which will be published in the spring, includes personal memories, reflections on readings, poems, and inspired writings.

A Year by the Sea
Nine learners participated in the Southern California Library Literacy Network’s 18th Annual Writer to Writer Challenge. This writing challenge invites adult learners throughout southern California to write a letter to an author whose book inspired them. Tanya Jauregui, was awarded runner-up in the intermediate writer category. She wrote a letter to Joan Anderson, author of A Year by the Sea. Tanya wrote, “After reading your book, it made me realize that women have their own keys to their happiness.”

One learner completed the Adult Literacy Leadership Institute Bootcamp and several learners have made public presentations to community groups. Another learner assists the adult literacy computer instructor. Learners began reading words, sentences, and books on their own. More than a dozen learners reported that they had advanced in their employment. Some learners are pursuing certifications, citizenship, or have graduated from the Adult Literacy program having met their literacy goals.

All learners are to be congratulated for their commitment to improve their literacy.  READ MORE >>

Santa Paula Blanchard Library :: BEST Adult Learning Center Awarded Family Literacy Grants

BEST Adult Learning Center Awarded Family Literacy Grants

A $45,000 grant from the California Library Literacy Services (CLLS) and a $10,000 grant from the American Library Association (ALA) will help support a unique family literacy program at Blanchard Community Library (BCL) that aims to help immigrant families better advocate for their children through improved English and by building the social skills and confidence necessary to participate in an English-speaking world.

The Mommy & Me Literacy program was launched in 2017 at BCL with the purpose of improving reading and writing skills for adults with preschool age children. Children of parents with low literacy skills have a 72% chance of being at the lowest reading levels themselves, according to the national adult literacy organization, ProLiteracy.

To address this statistic, Mommy & Me Literacy strives to lift the English proficiency of parents through traditional language classes while also carving out time for parents to practice early-learning activities with their own children.  Mommy & child spend time together reinforcing the family bond, playing, singing, and building strong reading habits—and exploring the library together.  In addition, once a week, an interactive curriculum, Abriendo Puertas/ Opening Doors helps parents develop their role as their child’s first teacher and strongest advocate.

Monrovia Library :: Learner Stories

LEARNER STORIES Angela
Literacy Ledger:  Spring 2019

I am an immigrant from Colombia in this country. I began to receive help to improve my English a few years ago with an excellent program of tutoring in the library of Monrovia.

My tutor at that time was a great person, Bryan Smith, who helped me a lot. Now I am accompanied by an excellent tutor, Margaret Page, who every week gives me a lot of help with reading newspapers and books, writing paragraphs, and conversation about different and interesting topics.

Every day I feel that I advance to achieve my goals and that of my tutor.

Many thanks to this program for not only supporting Hispanics but to all the cultures that we find here.

I hope to continue for a long time with this excellent program.

Placentia Library :: Spotlight On Literacy

SPOTLIGHT ON LITERACY: Meet Our Learners & Tutors

Sumi is a prolific reader from South Korea. Her love of literature lead her to sign up for the adult literacy program. Her goal is to improve her English to be able to read classic literature. We are working towards achieving this goal by reading simplified versions of classic novels, learning new words, and completing engaging lessons on reading and writing.

In Sumi’s words, “Thank you for the Placentia Library’s adult literacy program that gave me the pleasure of learning English with such a great teacher. The literacy program has had a big impact on my life.” Sumi is tutored by Raul, a recent graduate from CSUF. Raul combines his education and skills to help Sumi build her reading and writing skills. They meet every week for an hour and a half.

In Raul’s own words, “The Placentia Literacy Program has helped me develop into a better teacher so that I can be successful in my career as an ESL instructor and has given me a way to be more connected and involved in my community.”  READ MORE >>

Long Beach Library :: Introducing LB Reads Literacy Program

Introducing LB Reads
Long Beach Library: June 2019

Long Beach Public Library is excited to launch LB Reads on Saturday, June 15th at the annual Summer Reading Program kickoff at Bach Neighborhood Library.
LB Reads is a free, one-on-one literacy tutoring program designed to help English speaking adults improve their reading and writing skills so they can reach their potential as workers, parents, community members, and life-long learners.

The National Center for Education Statistics reported that 33.5 percent of the population 16 years and over in Los Angeles County lacked basic prose literacy skills. =This was up from 20.4 percent in 1992. The annual America's Most Literate Cities study of Central Connecticut State University has ranked 88 U.S. cities for literacy since 2003. Their 2014 ranking placed Long Beach overall in 67th place. LB Reads seeks to improve these numbers by pairing tutors and learners in a trusted learning environment.

Literacy has always been a core goal of the library, and LB Reads is our way of reaching the underserved population of adults who cannot read or write proficiently.

Patrons interested in joining the program, either as a tutor or a learner, can contact the Long Beach Public Library at lbreads@lbpl.org or by calling (562) 570-6579.

LB Reads is made possible by the California State Library through the California Library Literacy Services grant.
