Career Online High School Diploma :: SCLLN Libraries

Opportunity Knocking At Beaumont Library: Career Online H.S.
An innovative program allows adults over 19 to earn an accredited high school diploma, a career certificate, and prepare for college.
Patch: 1.29.2018 by Renee Schiavone

Opportunity knocked when Edwin Romero visited his hometown library. As his daughters sat quietly reading, Romero spotted a brochure about 'Career Online High School.'

"I'm 46 years old," Romero thought to himself. "But it's never too late to start."

Ten months later, Romero had earned a scholarship and become the first graduate of the Career Online High School program through the Beaumont Library.

Since graduating in 2017, Romero, a cable company installer, has set his sights on becoming a cybersecurity expert.

The Career Online High School program is also offered across the Inland Empire at branches of the Riverside County Library System and the San Bernardino County Library.

The innovative program allows adults over 19 years of age with a library card to earn an accredited high school diploma, a career certificate, and prepare for college.

Students learn in an online environment available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They're paired with an academic coach and a coordinator at the Beaumont Library.

Students may enroll year-round, scholarships are available, and while students work at their own pace, the program must be completed in 18 months.  READ MORE >>

Beaumont Library :: Stories from the Porch-Building a World of Books

Stories from the Porch-Building a World of Books
Patch/Banning-Beaumont: 9.03.2017 by Luren Dickinson

Join Beaumont Library for its 8th annual “Stories from the Porch – Building a World of Books” program from 10 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, September 23, in celebration of International Literacy Day.

The program encourages community leaders, community members, literacy volunteers, library staff and/or adult learners to read their favorite children’s book from the “front porch” of the library. Readers may bring their own book or read one we supply, or tell a story, read a poem, sing, dance, or play an instrument.

The program will draw attention to the problem of low literacy and illiteracy among adults (1 in 5 adults in the United States has low literacy skills). This means they are unable to complete job applications, read notes home from school, or administer medication properly.  READ MORE @

Beaumont Library - Locals Compete in SCLLN "Writer To Writer" Challenge

Locals compete in Southern California Libraries “Writer to Writer” contest
Record Gazette: 3.21.2014 by Julie Farren

Beaumont residents Blanca Flores and Amatul Mohiuddin are very proud of being first runners-up in the Southern California Libraries “Writer to Writer’’ contest.

Both women are in the Adult Literacy Program at the Beaumont Library and are being individually tutored on their writing and reading skills.

They entered the contest in December 2013 under the guidance of Lucy Sims, adult literacy program manager at the Beaumont Library.

Flores, 45, and Mohiuddin, who did not want her age disclosed, were among 47 entrants in the contest, which featured Southern California residents.

They learned in February that they were winners. Flores and Mohiuddin attended the main event with Sims on March 8 in Buena Park.

The categories include: Emerging, Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Writers.

Flores, from Mexico, has been in the Adult Literacy program for five years, Mohiuddin, from India, for three years.

This is Flores’ second year entering the contest, but the first for Mohiuddin.

Flores chose to write an essay on the book “Skinny,’’ which addresses the issue of weight and teen-age girls. In her essay, Flores spoke about trying to understand her daughter’s feelings about her weight.

“You have to be touched by the book before you write about it,” said Flores, runner- up in the Advanced Writers category. Flores is married with two children, ages 10 and 9. She moved to the United States in 1996.

Mohiuddin, runner up in the Beginners category, wrote an essay based on the book, “A Thousand Splendid Suns,’’ which tells the story of three Afghanistan women – Miriam, Laila and Aziza, who are in different stages of their lives. But what they have in common is not enough freedom or a lot of education.
Reading about these women opened up Mohiuddin’s eyes about living in America. Mohiuddin, who is married and has three children ages 12, 9, and 6, moved to the United States in 1995.  READ MORE !

Writer to Writer Challenge - 2013

The Southern California Library Literacy Network is excited to announce the winners and runners-up for the 2013 Writer to Writer Challenge! We received a large response—45 entries—and the quality of the letters was amazing! We are so proud of all of the learners who wrote letters. We are grateful to the coordinators and learner judging panels at Huntington Beach Public Library, National City Public Library, Newport Beach Central Public Library, and Carlsbad City Library for donating their time to judge the letters.

Please join us at the Southern California Library Literacy Network Literacy Conference at the Holiday Inn, Buena Park, on Saturday, March 8, where the winners will be recognized during the lunch program. The winners and runners-up will each receive a cash prize and a certificate, and may attend the conference at our expense but they must pre-register.  All letter writers will receive a certificate of participation.
