San Diego County Library :: Libraries and Learning Upgrade: Accessing Literacy Services Via Libraries & Apps

Libraries and Learning Upgrade: Accessing Literacy Services Via Libraries & Apps
WS Radio:  10.23.2018

It was a pleasure to have with us, Migell Acosta, Director of the San Diego County Library. Migell spoke about the different ways that libraries provide resources to residents so that they read better, write better, do math better, function better, and live a better quality of life. He shared information about e-books, library-literacy services, and Library High School.

Literacy for All radio show is here to enhance access to information and promising practices that support the national and international literacy network and those they serve.

About the Host:
Jose L Cruz began his work in literacy in 1985. The San Diego Council on Literacy was formed one year later. Since then, both have worked to unite the San Diego community to support literacy. Jose has worked in collaborations for literacy at all levels. He has a 26 year history with the SDCOL, the last 12 years as CEO.

The pride of the SDCOL is its network of 27+ affiliated literacy program partners that annually serve over 179,000 San Diego residents of all ages at no cost. Everyday, these partnerships help emerging readers, students, parents, heads of households, and workers function and thrive through the power of literacy.  LISTEN 14:54 & 14:56

San Diego Co Library :: Earn Your High School Diploma at a Library

Earn Your High School Diploma at a Library
County News Center: 4.13.2018 by Suzanne Bartole

For many, high school graduation is a rite of passage, but sometimes circumstances prevent students from getting a diploma.

We talked with one man who, at the age of 56, is seeing his dream of earning a diploma come true thanks to the County Library and his hard work.
You can apply to Career Online High School over at the Library’s website.

Enrollment is limited and the demand is expected to be high. Adults must successfully pass an online self-assessment and prerequisite course, as well as an in-person interview to become an applicant in the program.

For additional information, you can contact the El Cajon Library.  WATCH VIDEO

San Diego Co Library :: English Learners Write about Their Favorites

English learners write about their favorites

Participants in the Laubach English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at the Ramona Library held their 2017 Focus on Writing Celebration recently at the library.

The writing event is held every year in the spring to give English learners the opportunity to use their writing skills and to encourage writing. This year 15 learners from beginner to intermediate levels wrote on the topic, “My Favorite ...”

Each participant was awarded a certificate and a book donated by the Laubach Literacy Council of San Diego County (LLCSDC). The council in partnership with the San Diego County Library offers ESL classes in libraries, including the Ramona Branch, as well as in other non-library centers.

About 250 tutors serve an estimated 800 adult learners throughout the county making LLCSDC the largest totally volunteer ESL organization in the county. READ MORE @

San Diego Co Library :: VC Man Celebrates Becoming a US Citizen

VC man celebrates becoming a US citizen
Valley Roadrunner: 5.19.2016 by David Ross

It was an all-American celebration, complete with small American flags, a big cake, congratulations and lots of smiles. And a few tears.

In a few days, on May 25 Leonardo Zuniga will join hundreds of men and women in San Diego’s Golden Hall in repeating this oath

═════════►
Zuniga, who recently changed his last name from Zuñiga in order to make it easier to pronounce— following a grand tradition established by countless millions who landed at Ellis Island in New York City over many decades— celebrated his pending U.S. citizenship Tuesday night at a reception hosted for him by the Valley Center Library.

The event celebrated his graduation from the San Diego County Library (SDCL) Citizenship Program, passing his United States Citizenship Interview, and being scheduled to take the oath on May 25.

With tears in his eyes Zuniga accepted the praise of his teacher, Citizenship Instructor, Graciela Schneider, a native of Argentina, who has lived in the United States for many years, and who teaches the weekly Citizenship classes every Tuesday night.

“He finished the program in six months, not knowing a word of English when he started,” she said. Zuniga was the first student to complete the program at VC Library.

She noted that during her classes she doesn’t let the student speak at all in Spanish, and with a twinkle in her eyes added, “If I slipped into Spanish Leonardo would say, ‘Say in English!’ ”

Mrs. Schneider was also recognized for her dedication to the program by VC branch manager Laura Zuckerman and Susan Moore, San Diego County Library Deputy Director, who was once a literacy tutor, and currently directs the library system’s “Learn program.”   READ MORE @

Library To Host Citizenship Workshops

San Diego County Library (SDCL) will present a free Citizenship Workshop every Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. through 2016 at the Imperial Library Branch, 847 Encina Avenue. Participants will learn about the eligibility requirements for becoming United States citizens, and receive legal assistance with the citizenship application process. All are welcome to attend, but a limited number of seats are available; call the Imperial Beach Library at 619-424-6981 to check for availability.

The workshop will supplement an ongoing series of weekly citizenship classes held at the El Cajon Library. Coordinated by SDCL’s L.E.A.R.N. adult literacy program, these classes help immigrants prepare for their naturalization exams by providing assistance with the 100 civics questions and English language skills.

Kevin Vigil, L.E.A.R.N. coordinator, says, “The purpose of the San Diego County Library’s Citizenship Class Program is to help prepare immigrants to pass their naturalization exam. L.E.A.R.N. completes our program and allows us to offer free legal assistance for the naturalization application process.”

The San Diego County Library is dedicating to serve all members of our community, and to ensuring that San Diego is a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. It is our goal to provide information to those in need so that they can be certain that they are well-informed about topics relevant to them.

For more information about the workshop or citizenship classes at the Imperial Beach Library, please call (619) 424-6981. For information about San Diego County Library, visit www.sdcl.org.

San Diego Co Library :: County Volunteer Coordinator Motivates Volunteers, Residents to LEARN

County Volunteer Coordinator Motivates Volunteers, Residents to LEARN

Over 440,000 adults (20%) in San Diego County cannot read at the third-grade level, lacking the literacy skills needed to sign a form, fill out a bank deposit slip, or enjoy a novel. Many have learning disabilities; others received insufficient individual instruction in school or at home; and still others are immigrants seeking to learn English as a second language.  To help adults improve their literacy skills and empower them to achieve their goals, the County created the LEARN Adult Literacy program in 2005. Volunteer Coordinator Kevin Vigil has been inspired by the program’s success since the beginning.

“I moved here from Denver just as the program was getting started,” said Vigil.  “I was a school teacher and needed to update my credential to work here in California, so this job was only meant to be temporary, but I ended up loving what I was doing!  I get to see the impact this program has on people’s lives and coming to work is something I look forward to every day.”

LEARN (Libraries Empower All to Read Now) is a volunteer-based tutoring program that helps adults improve their literacy skills through one-on-one and small group tutoring and computer-aided instruction.  Services are free and confidential.  There are literacy centers at the El Cajon and Vista branch libraries, but services are available at all San Diego County Library branches.

“We have such an international county,” said Vigil.  “About 60% of our learners are non-native speakers – from Spanish and Arabic to Korean and Chinese.  We have 33 branch libraries and all of their demographics are different.”  READ MORE !
