Carolyn Cosgrove spent 40+ years in advertising when she and her business partner decided to sell their agency and retire. She wanted to volunteer with an organization that was close to her heart with reading and writing. After 10+ years of tutoring, NMPL still holds that place. When a friend recommended the program to Il Jeong Choi, she registered for New Learner Orientation and got an assessment. From there she participated in several classes before being matched with Carolyn for one on one tutoring.

Il Jeong, did you feel nervous about the program when you started?

IJ: Yes, I was very nervous because my English was not perfect then, and my writing and speaking were horrible. Thus, I didn’t know how to communicate and explain my goals. The one thing only I had then was passionate and brave about learning English.

Carolyn, how do you get ideas for what to work on during sessions?

C: Various. Great support from the Literacy Office and their many resources, current events/articles I think my Learner would enjoy discussing and writing about, etc. Each session is different.  READ MORE ➤➤

Tutor Orientation and Training

Tutors are required to complete online orientation and attend tutor training. Orientation must be completed before attending the training sessions.

Online orientations can be taken at any time.

Please be aware that when you take the Online Tutor Orientation (approximately 20 minutes), you must complete and submit the online application at the end of the orientation in order to be scheduled for one of our Tutor Training sessions.

Camarena Memorial Library has been offering various literacy services to help Calexico residents improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills in a virtual environment since the pandemic started.

English as a second language (ESL) classes are offered three times per week via Zoom. In order to be part of this class, an intake interview is performed, and if the person qualifies, the person gets added to a waiting list. The current participants are taking the Level 2 class. Each level is completed in about four months. Once a participant has completed the two levels, it is very likely that they qualify for adult tutoring services.

Adult tutoring services are also offered virtually. A library volunteer tutor helps another adult improve their reading and writing skills in one-on-one sessions. The learner’s learning goals are what drives the curriculum the tutor puts together. Tutor and learner meet for at least two hours per week. The library provides all the materials the tutor and the learner need for their sessions. This program is possible thanks to the California Library Literacy Services Grant.

In addition to these services, the library also offers a weekly conversation session where participants can practice their English-speaking skills. The “Let’s Talk” conversation group meets via zoom on Thursdays at 5 p.m.

Our Inspired Citizenship program has seen 200 new citizens of the United States of America. Inspired Citizenship offers a Civic classes and one on one tutoring.

The Literacy Program of the Azusa City Library is committed to providing experiences for adults to change their lives and move 1 step closer to fulfilling their potential and reaching their dreams. We offer 2 basic programs:

➤ Free, 1-to-1 and small group tutoring for adults who speak English and want to improve their basic reading, writing and math skills. Trained volunteers tutor students once or twice a week, at a time convenient for both.

➤ Leamos, a free computer-based program for adults who speak Spanish but cannot read and write in Spanish. It is appropriate for adults who have 2 years or less of formal education. Volunteers assist students with their learning. This program is offered in partnership with Proliteracy.

While the Los Angeles public library buildings remain closed to the public, librarians from several branches have created comfortable and fun programs online. Los Angeles Times City Beat Columnist Nita Lelyveld joined us to share all the details.

"The Los Angeles Public Library system has been offering various classes and projects for people of all ages. I went to many literacy classes where people were improving their English or learning English, and I saw people from all over the world participating. There were so many different accents, and you could peak into so many other lives, and people were taking these classes that were so eager to learn that they were standing outside able to take these classes,” said Lelyveld.

Learning about people’s experiences through the resources offered by the libraries was very rewarding for Lelyveld.  WATCH 06:08

Teaching adults to read and write would not be possible without volunteers just like you. No prior teaching experience is required. We provide free introductory online training and follow up support and training. Our goal is to help you succeed and provide an amazing volunteer experience for every volunteer.

Stella is all about the public she serves. She has been especially helpful to her ESL patrons and has more than a few thriving Conversation groups. She herself, provides all the adult programming at her branch including multiple bookclubs and a monthly Writer's retreat. Stella was also instrumental in bringing Genealogy programming to OCPL and offered many of the programs herself.

Stella's creativity and sense of innovation, is best described in her efforts to keep the ESL classes going strong at her branch. Stella recognized the growing need for ESL in Lake Forest, as well as the need to keep the momentum going with the existing students. As soon as virtual book groups became available, she had her ESL classes Zooming away!

When bookclubs had to stop meeting due to COVID, Stella maintained communication with those members for whom the bookclub was the highlight of their month. One member who was so sad to move out of state, has now rejoined the group via Zoom. Simply put, Stella is an empathic, committed professional who is passionate about librarianship.  READ MORE ➤➤

Registration for Online ESL and Citizenship Prep Classes is now open!

ESL and Citizenship Classes

In ESL Classes, students learn to speak English or speak English better.

Students learn by listening, speaking, reading and writing. There are seven levels of classes for beginning, intermediate and advanced speakers. Each class focuses on everyday language people use in conversation at home, in the neighborhood, at work or school and in other locations and situations out in the community.

Attend Citizenship Preparation Classes at the library!

Citizenship Classes & Coaching help students get ready for the Citizenship Interview. Students study the 100 Questions, U.S. History & Government and how to fill out the N-400. Students learn by speaking, reading & writing the information needed to meet required Basic English skills. Due to limited space, those living in Monterey Park are given priority. Applicants prove address by bringing a valid picture I.D. After at least 12 hours of attendance, a student with an interview date can receive 1-1 interview coaching.

As a tutor, I have been working with Marleny for 2 years and I continue to be impressed with her dedication and her progress every time we meet. What is most impressive to me about Marleny is her continued dedication to improving her reading, writing, and speaking skills. In addition to our tutoring sessions, she has also attended English language classes at a local adult school, and is always looking for additional opportunities to learn and to practice.

Marleny also writes pieces in her spare time to practice her English on topics of interest to her, and proudly submits her work to any writing challenge or call for articles that she sees. I am fortunate for the opportunity to hear about her life and to see how she expresses herself on things that are meaningful to her.

It is time to talk about my amazing tutor Jonathan Lesser. I’ll always be very grateful to Jonathan for all he has taught me since March 10, 2018 until now.

I have learned a lot from him. He is a very good teacher. I admire him because he is active and also has a lot of energy to teach me after his job. When I started to meet him I did not have the ability to talk and write in English like today. In our meeting we have conversations. If I make a mistake he corrects me. In addition, he teaches me how to pronounce and write words that I write incorrectly. When I read to him, he asks me questions about what I read. Also I have to write about what I read. Starting in Asia today…

There has been a large rise in coronavirus cases across the middle-east. Iran recorded 163 deaths yesterday, the highest so far. Saudi Arabia has passed 200,000 infections and the UAE has passed 50,000. Saudi Arabia and the UAE have seen fast rises in cases since ending lockdowns a few weeks ago. Bahrain and Qatar have the highest confirmed infection rates in the world – in Qatar one in every 28 people has been infected, according to Johns Hopkins University.

In Japan 34 people are thought to have died in floods. Heavy rain has lead to flooding in Japan and China. In China the floods have affected 15 million people, and over a hundred people are missing. In Myanmar rescue operations are continuing, 5 days after a mine collapsed killing over 170 people.

In the Australian city of Melbourne people living in 9 apartment blocks have been told not to leave their homes for any reason. 23 cases of COVID19 were found in the residential blocks. Melbourne Premier Daniel Andrews said that it will be traumatic for the residents, but it is necessary…

“There will be no reason for any of those residents to leave their home. This is in many respects the most challenging issue we have dealt with throughout this entire global pandemic. I don’t for a moment underestimate how challenging and how traumatic in some respects, that will be.”

Americas

In the United States rapper Kanye West has announced that he is running for the presidency. In the past Kanye West has shown support for President Donald Trump, and in 2018 West visited the White House… West has sold over 140 million records and has a personal net worth of 1.3 billion dollars – half that of Donald Trump.

The Dominican Republic. At the time of recording this podcast it appears that the ruling party will lose this election. If that is true it will be the first time that the Dominican Liberation Party has been out of power in 16 years. Luis Corona of the Modern Revolutionary Party appears likely to be the next president.

Mexico’s confirmed coronavirus death toll passed 30,000 yesterday. Mexican President Lopez Obrador continues to say that Mexico must reopen, despite a fast rise in coronavirus cases. In Colombia reports say that 80% of intensive care beds are being used. The Colombian government has bought new ventilator machines, as cases rise on the Pacific Coast. And Argentina has extended its debt negotiation period again. Argentina received 57$billion dollars from the International Monetary Fund in 2018 – the biggest loan in IMF history.

Africa

In Mali president Boubacar Keita has met with Mahmoud Dicko, the leader of a protest movement asking for the president’s resignation. Tens of thousands of Malians protested last month demanding that Keita resign. People are angry at continued attacks by jihadist groups and inter-ethnic violence.

Algeria has buried the remains of 24 soldiers, 150 years after their deaths. The 24 Algerians were killed by the French army at the beginning of French occupation of Algeria, and their bodies were taken to France. The bones of the fighters were returned to Algeria last week and a ceremony was held on Saturday.

Europe

In Croatia there were elections yesterday. At the time of recording this podcast 60% of votes had been declared and the ruling conservative party HDZ had won the most votes.

And in the United Kingdom, scientists are trying to find a treatment for the coronavirus, using llamas. Scientists are seeing if llamas, the South American animals, could produce antibodies needed to prevent infection.
