Redlands Library ▬ Redlands Caught Up In ‘Charlotte’s Web’ For 2021 Community Read

Redlands Caught Up In ‘Charlotte’s Web’ For 2021 Community Read

Redlands Adult Literacy
Redlands Daily Facts: 4.16.2021 by Diane Shimota, Adult Literacy Coor-A.K. Smiley Library

The Redlands Adult Literacy Program has named the classic story “Charlotte’s Web,” written by E. B. White, as its 2021 Community Read.

Charlotte’s Web

“Charlotte’s Web” is a story that speaks to all generations with its themes of friendship, life, death and the power of words. The Community Read offers the opportunity for parents and children, readers who have read “Charlotte’s Web” or are new to the story, book club members and others, to experience the book’s message in a new way, particularly as we reflect on all that has occurred in the last year.

🔽
Guillermina Rangel, an adult learner enrolled in the Redlands Adult Literacy Program, is reading “Charlotte’s Web” for the first time. She observed, “I just love Wilbur, how innocent he is and his determination to learn. I also like Charlotte, who is very well educated, patient and compassionate towards Wilbur. To me, she is like a very dedicated teacher.”

To enhance the reading experience, a Charlotte’s Web activity guide has been posted on the Adult Literacy website. The guide includes a history of the author and the book’s illustrator, Garth Williams, as well as vocabulary, discussion topics, and activities for people of all ages.  READ MORE ➤➤

Redlands Library ▬ Literacy Students Write About Their Pandemic Experiences In New Anthology

Redlands Literacy Students Write About Their Pandemic Experiences In New Anthology

Our Stories,
Pandemic Reflections

Redlands Daily Facts: 2.05.2021 by Diane Shimota, Adult Literacy Coord: A.K. Smiley Library

The Redlands Adult Literacy Program recently published “Our Stories, A Collection of Writings, Volume 3,” which includes writings from adult learners enrolled in the Redlands Adult Literacy Program. Over 40 adult learners and tutors contributed written works for the anthology. These works focused on the learners’ journeys to literacy, personal reflections, family and friends, memories and adventures, and reflections about books the learners had read. This year, a special chapter entitled “Pandemic Reflections” was added to the anthology providing an opportunity for authors to share the impact that the pandemic has had on their lives.

The anthology provided an opportunity for adult learners to write stories from their hearts, choosing just the right words to express themselves, and then to share those stories with the broader community. Previously, the Redlands community would be invited to a “Celebration of Authors” event, where adult learners would read their works to an audience that included their families and friends. Because of the social distancing requirements caused by the pandemic, this year the library recorded authors reading their stories, so that the whole community could experience the joy of hearing the works of adult learners who are working to improve their literacy.

This anthology’s pandemic reflections were especially heart-felt and relevant as everyone continues to adapt to changes caused by the pandemic. Several learners wrote about the losses they had experienced, like the inability to see family or gather in large groups, supporting children with online school, learning how to meet with tutors remotely, and adapting to wearing face masks.  READ MORE ➤➤

Redlands Library ▬ Family Literacy Program Celebrates The Wonders Of Reading

Redlands Family Literacy Program Celebrates The Wonders Of Reading

Family Literacy Program
Redlands Daily Facts: 12.04.2020 by Diane Shimota, Adult Literacy Coord-A.K. Smiley Library

The Family Literacy Program began one year ago at A.K. Smiley Public Library and what a year it has been for all of us! The California State Library provided funding for the Family Literacy Program because research has shown that parents are their children’s first and most important teachers. Family literacy introduces adult learners and their children to the value of reading together and helps parents develop skills to support their children’s education with fun and creative learning activities.

Prior to the library’s closure in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Family Literacy Program participants met in-person. Parents and children made new friends and supported each other as they learned new strategies to encourage a love of reading. Family literacy coordinators Joan Prehoda and Renee Kennedy adapted the program to online meetings using Zoom last May. These online meetings provided new and unanticipated opportunities for families to learn. Children as young as age 5 learned how to take Zoom polls online and join breakout rooms.

═════════►
Even though the zoom meetings were successful, families were excited to return to in-person meetings at the A.K. Smiley Public Library where they met outdoors in the Children’s Garden in a socially distanced and safe way. This provided an opportunity for families to connect with one another safely from across the garden.

The Way I Feel
At the November meeting families discussed the concept of emotions and appropriate ways for their children to express those feelings. Families read “The Way I Feel” by Janan Cain and asked the children to use play dough on a face mat to recreate several different feelings.  READ MORE ➤➤

Redlands Library ▬ Redlands Community Invited to Use Adult Literacy Resources

Redlands Community Invited to Use Adult Literacy Resources

The Cell Phone Lot

Smiley Library Blog: 10.04.2020 by Diane Shimota

Generous donors and grantors have enabled the Redlands Adult Literacy Program to acquire a wide selection of literacy materials that are available for checkout by anyone in the community. These materials may be helpful to students who want to improve their reading and writing skills, and adults who want to improve their English literacy skills. You are invited to peruse the adult literacy collection at A. K. Smiley Public Library where you will find: fiction and nonfiction stories, biographies, abbreviated classics, graphic novels, audio books, and workbooks that enhance learning for those who are working to improve their literacy. Literacy books are written with themes that appeal to adult readers, but with grammar and vocabulary that make the books easy to understand.

The adult literacy collection includes contemporary stories that are available to everyone regardless of their reading level. The Gemma Open Door Series books are quick and easy to read. One of these books, The Cell Phone Lot by Greta Gorsuch, was chosen by the adult learner book club for their November selection. The book is a story about a young woman who lost her job and found herself unable to pay her bills. This resilient young woman found a way to generate income by working for a ride-sharing company. Through this new endeavor, she built relationships with people she met as they waited for riders at the cell phone lot.

Redlands Library ▬ Redlands Celebrates Adult Literacy Program

Redlands Celebrates Adult Literacy Program

Redlands Community News: 10.29.2020 by Shari Forbes

Revived 10 years ago, it sparkles in city’s crown of jewels

If Redlands is the Jewel of the Inland Empire, then the A.K. Smiley Public Library’s Adult Literacy Program is one of the brightest jewels in the city's crown.

For a decade, the program has changed lives and opened new vistas for hundreds of community members with its team of volunteers who provide one-on-one confidential tutoring in reading and writing to help learners in the Redlands community reach their literacy goals.

And it’s free.

“All it takes is a desire to improve your literacy skills and a commitment to meet with your tutor once a week for six months,” said Diane Shimota, coordinator of the Adult Literacy program.

“For many folks with low-literacy skills, there is often the stigma of embarrassment and lack of confidence. We provide a safe, non-threatening and confidential learning environment with a caring tutor who is focused solely on literacy goals.”

An added bonus is the learning venue. The beautiful architecture of the historic A.K. Smiley Library provides peaceful aesthetic settings for learner-tutor sessions.

Coping with COVID

The library reopened on Sept. 9 on a limited basis after being closed for more than six months because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This did not stop the literacy program. Learners continued to meet weekly with their tutors via Zoom or on the telephone. Now they can return to the library by reserving space in advance and adhering to COVID-19 guidelines.

Adult learner Guillermina Rangel met her tutor Katherine Gifford in person for the first time during the interview for this feature story. Until this physically distanced meeting in the library garden on Tuesday, Oct. 20, they had been meeting over the telephone.  READ MORE ➤➤

Redlands Library ▬ Adult Literacy Program Celebrates Learner-Led Book Club!

Adult Literacy Program Celebrates Learner-Led Book Club!

Tuesdays with Morrie

Redlands Reads: July 2020

Adult learners Martha Romo and Tanya Jauregui are leading the adult literacy program’s first learner-led book club. When asked why she would like to start a book club for adult learners, Tanya shared that book clubs provide an opportunity for “like-minded individuals to help and encourage each other, give everyone confidence, and build community.” Martha sees the book club as an opportunity for learners to lose their fear of reading without the support of their tutors.

Both learners know the power of reading. Martha shared that “every little thing you read opens your mind to new ideas or to better answers in your life.” Likewise, Tanya said, “Reading gives essential nutrients to the brain and helps to expand life’s journey.” The book club met for the first time only a few days prior to the library’s closure due to Covid-19.

The book club’s inaugural book was Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, chosen by Tanya and Martha for its themes of friendship and compassion. Book club participants were fortunate to be able to get to know one another in person at this meeting. By the time the second book club discussion took place in May, the community was under stay-at-home orders and the meeting took place through Zoom.  READ MORE ➤➤

Redlands Library ▬ Redlands Family’s Literacy Journey Leads To Educational, Employment Opportunities

Redlands Family’s Literacy Journey Leads To Educational, Employment Opportunities
Redlands Daily Facts: 8.01.2020  by Diane Shimota, Adult Literacy Coordinator-A.K. Smiley Library

Many adults who join the Redlands Adult Literacy Program want to improve their reading and writing skills so they can get better jobs, further their own education, and advocate for their children. Through hard work and perseverance adult learners can change their own and their family’s lives for the better.
The following is a story of adult learners who graduated from the Redlands Adult Literacy Program and, with their new literacy skills, started a business, earned a GED, and encouraged their children to excel in their education.

Monica Sanchez joined the adult literacy program in February 2014 because she needed to become an advocate for her special needs son. Working with her tutor, Rebecca McCurdy, she gained literacy skills that enabled her to communicate effectively with teachers and medical professionals, understand medical directives, and support her son. Monica’s goals changed over time to include dreams of attaining her GED, supporting her children with their education, and getting a better job. Monica diligently worked for four years in the literacy program to improve her reading, grammar, vocabulary, and writing. She celebrated when she earned her GED in 2017 because this opened doors to better employment.

In 2018, she was hired by the Redlands Unified School District to work as a campus monitor at an elementary school. Monica shared, “I liked being a campus monitor; it was a fun and comfortable job for me. I was playing with kids and getting paid for that.”

When the coronavirus pandemic forced the closure of schools, Monica, like so many others, found herself unemployed. She eventually began working as a DoorDash driver and used this as an opportunity to teach her younger children about what it was like to have a job and manage their own money; they helped her leave meals on porches and Monica gave them an allowance of $1 per delivery.

═════════►
Monica’s husband, Armando Sanchez, also joined the literacy program in 2014. His goals were to improve his reading and writing in order to advance at his job at Ashley Furniture and to have a better life.  READ MORE ➤➤

Redlands Library ◯ Coronavirus Pushes Redlands Literacy Program Online

Coronavirus Pushes Redlands Literacy Program Online
Redlands Daily Facts: 5.31.2020 by Diane Shimota, Adult Literacy Coord-A.K. Smiley Library

Before social distancing was required in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic, adult learners in the Redlands Adult Literacy Program met weekly with their volunteer tutors at A. K. Smiley Public Library or program-approved learning sites at Clement Middle School, Family Services Association and the Redlands Community Center. The tutor-learner teams worked shoulder-to-shoulder to help the learners improve their reading and writing skills.

On March 16, the library was closed to the public due to the virus. The literacy program faced the major challenge of finding new ways for tutors to assist learners in meeting their literacy goals, while complying with the governor’s social distancing guidelines. Additionally, the request for literacy assistance grew, as 25% of adult learners were laid off due to the economic downturn.

Tutors and learners have met the social distancing challenge with innovation and creativity by using apps, online computer resources, and phones to meet. In fact, over 50 adult learners continue to meet with their tutors, participate in the family literacy program, use online software independently, and participate in the learner-led book club to improve their literacy skills.

The following are a few of their stories:  READ MORE ➤➤

Redlands Library ◯ More Than 340 Speak Out On Proposed Cuts To Redlands Library, Other Departments

More Than 340 Speak Out On Proposed Cuts To Redlands Library, Other Departments
Redlands Daily Facts: 5.12.2020 by Jennifer Iyer

Hundreds have shared concerns over cuts Redlands is considering to balance a $15.7 million shortfall in the 2020-21 budget.

More than 340 people sent written comments, the only kind allowed by the city due to novel coronavirus precautions, ahead of the City Council meeting Tuesday, May 12.  ◯

Staff spent about four hours reading each comment into the record, leaving no time to hear from department heads or discuss proposals before the Planning Commission meeting slated for the same afternoon. The council meeting is set to resume at 7 p.m. Tuesday with department presentations on plans for the next year and the impacts of the proposed cuts.

The majority of comments Tuesday objected to proposed cuts at the A.K. Smiley Public Library, which could lose 17 positions to shave more than $500,000 from its budget. Also, the facility’s hours of operation could be reduced to nearly half of the current 57.

City Manager Charlie Duggan attributed all of the budget woes to COVID-19’s effect on the economy.

═════════►
The proposed 2020-21 budget originally called for library hours to be reduced to 30 per week. Duggan and managers looked into using more reserves to replace some of the proposed cuts, and brought the library up to 35 hours.

Bob Hodges, a former superintendent of the Redlands Unified School District, wrote to say the library will be needed for its contribution to education.

“These services will be even more critical next year as budget and modified classroom instructional challenges will be greater than ever,” he wrote.

Redlands resident Casey Hamilton noted the importance of services like adult literacy tutoring, “fascinating historical archives” of the Heritage Room, the Lincoln Shrine, and free internet access, which people may need to search for jobs.  READ MORE ➤➤

Redlands Library ◯ 3 Adult Literacy Students In Redlands Honored For Their Writing

3 Adult Literacy Students In Redlands Honored For Their Writing
Redlands Daily Facts: 4.26.2020 by Diane Shimota, Adult Literacy Coord-AK Smiley Library

The cornerstones of literacy are reading comprehension and effective writing. Over the past two years, the Redlands Adult Literacy Program has offered tutor training and learner workshops to help learners develop stronger writing skills. The focus on writing led to 10 adult learners from the Redlands Adult Literacy Program entering into the Writer-to-Writer Challenge, sponsored by the Southern California Library Literacy Network (SCLLN).

The SCLLN annual Writer-to-Writer Challenge invites adult learners throughout Southern California to write a letter to an author, living or dead, whose book has inspired them. This year, 95 adult learners from the Southern California region submitted letters to the challenge. Literacy coordinators screened the letters and selected the top five in each of four categories. Panels of adult learners then judged the top letters and selected one winner and two runners-up for each level of writing.

The Redlands Adult Literacy Program is happy to announce that three adult learners, Marisela Casillas, Maria Hernandez, and Tanya Jauregui, earned runner-up recognition from SCLLN.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, however, the awards ceremony that would have recognized these learners has been postponed. The Redlands Adult Literacy Program acknowledges the achievement of all adult learners who submitted writing to the challenge and celebrates the three runners-up from Redlands.

Here is what the awardees said they had gained from their experience:

Marisela Casillas
Casillas read the book “Seedfolks” and wrote a letter to author Paul Fleischman. “Seedfolks” was the first book Casillas had read on her own. She chose to write the author because she could relate to the characters in the book.

Maria Hernandez
Hernandez entered the challenge with her letter to Stephanie Sammartino McPherson, reflecting upon the book “Peace and Bread” about the life of Jane Addams. Hernandez was moved by the compassion Jane Addams felt for the poor, especially children and immigrants. Hernandez’s mother shared Jane Addams’ compassion for others and passed this along to her daughter.

Tanya Jauregui
Jauregui read Michelle Obama’s “Becoming” and wrote, “… you gave me courage to find my voice and speak louder for the Adult Literacy Program … I need to keep using my voice to advocate for such an amazing program.”  READ MORE ➤➤

Redlands Library ◯ Literacy Volunteers in Redlands A Diverse Group With One Goal - To Change Lives

Literacy Volunteers in Redlands

A Diverse Group With One Goal  To Change Lives
Redlands Daily Facts: 11.09.2019 by Diane Shimota, Adult Literacy Coord: AK Smiley Library

The Redlands community is known for its commitment to serving others to ensure that everyone has the chance to be employed and educated. Without its volunteers, the Redlands Adult Literacy Program would not be able to meet its goal of helping adults who want to improve their reading and writing skills.

Many people are amazed to learn that approximately one in five adults in the United States has difficulties with literacy. The Redlands Adult Literacy Program currently serves over 100 learners who have requested literacy assistance.

Volunteer tutors learn that adults seek help with their literacy because they want to get a new or better job, help their children with their homework or further their own education. Literacy volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds: some tutors are retired while others are still employed, some volunteers have an educator’s background, but others have worked in business, the military, or local government. What successful adult literacy tutors have in common is that they have a passion and ability to read, write and speak English, are sensitive to the needs of adult learners, and are willing to assist adult learners in meeting their literacy goals.  READ MORE >>

Redlands Library :: Success Stories In Redlands Literacy Program Are As Unique As Its 100-Plus Learners

Success Stories In Redlands Literacy Program Are As Unique As Its 100-Plus Learners
The Redlands Adult Literacy Program is expanding with a family literacy class beginning in September
Redlands Daily Facts: 9.08.2019 by Diane Shimota, Adult Literacy Coord-A.K. Smiley Library

New volunteers sometimes ask how the Redlands Adult Literacy Program measures learner success. Most adults join the literacy program to improve their reading and writing skills in order to get a new or better job, help their children with their homework or further their own education, but reaching these goals is as unique as the 103 adults who were served by the program last year.

Some adults who ask for literacy assistance have little or no foundation in reading. At this level, participants learn to read basic words for the first time. For example, one adult learner recently celebrated being able to read and write 80 of the 100 most common words in the English language. Knowing how to read these 80 words has opened the door for him to begin reading sentences, stories in picture books, and signs that he comes across in his daily life.

One tutor was very excited to report that her learner was now reading fluently, which enabled him to understand what he reads. Now he is excited about reading biographies and learning about famous people in history.

═════════►
Adult learners have a wide range of writing skills. Some learners begin by writing two-word responses to questions, then later progress to writing full sentences and then stories. Their enthusiasm for writing continues to grow. This year 40 learners wrote and submitted their works for publication in the adult literacy anthology, “Our Stories, A Collection of Writings, Volume 2.” (Volumes 1 and 2 are available for checkout at the library.) Authors were invited to read their stories aloud at the June 2019 Celebration of Authors. It was heartwarming to observe how the adult learners’ family members saw their loved ones in a new light, as they witnessed their newly gained skills and confidence.  READ MORE >>
