Newport Beach Library :: Literacy FunRaiser :: Happy Hour with Lisi Harrison :: Oct 21

Happy Hour with Lisi Harrison
Best-selling Author of "The Dirty Book Club"
October 21 :: 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Central Library Friends Room
1000 Avocado Avenue
Newport Beach

Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy invites supporters to enjoy Happy Hour with Lisi Harrison, author of “The Dirty Book Club.”

Scheduled for release on October 10, “The Dirty Book Club” marks the New York Times best-selling author’s debut into adult fiction. The event includes a wine and cheese reception before the program, as well as a Q & A session following it. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Harrison’s novel focuses on four modern-day strangers who mysteriously inherit a dirty book club started in the 1960s. The unlikely friends bond over naughty bestsellers, sharing intimate details of their lives with each other. Inspired by the characters in the novels they read—and the notes passed down by the club's original members—the new members of The Dirty Book Club help each other find the courage to rewrite their own stories and risk it all for a happy ending.

Before becoming a best-selling author, Lisi Harrison was the Senior Director of Development for MTV where she created and developed new shows for the network. She is the author of over 25 books, including many in the very popular young adult fiction series, The Clique. A native of Canada, Harrison now makes her home in Laguna Beach. She has been a proud member of her own dirty book club since 2007.

Tickets for the Happy Hour with Lisi Harrison are available at $25 per person beginning September 1. Space is limited and tickets are expected to sell out quickly, as they did last year. Proceeds from the event fund literacy services for adult learners at the Newport Beach Public Library.

Redlands Library :: Reading & Literacy: A Shared Journey

Reading & literacy: A shared journey
Redlands Daily Facts: 10.05.2017 by Don Sprould

Much like the adult learners celebrated recently on Redlands’ Adult Literacy Day at the A.K. Smiley Public Library and Lincoln Shrine, Dr. Francisco Jiménez had come a long way to share in the moment.

When the author and Santa Clara University professor emeritus recently took the podium to discuss his life and book, “The Circuit: Stories from the Life of a Migrant Child,” he had much in common with many of the more than 250 in attendance.

“The Circuit” has been a book club selection in the library’s adult literacy program. As an educator, Jiménez worked to develop inclusive and multi-cultural programs and, as an author, he embraced an audience that shared his passion for learning. “I’m a little bit emotional [at the reception] to tell you the truth,” he confessed.

Quotes posted on the wall of Contemporary Club auditorium spoke of program values and successes of participants. Beneath a sign that read, “Literacy changes lives. Thanks to the Adult Literacy Program,” placards with photos of program participants proclaimed:

“Now I am a United States citizen.

“Now I am able to help my son with his homework.
“We are advocates for our special needs child.
“I have made a new friend.
“I was able to pass my English class and now I am heading to a 4-year college.
“I can read.”

Through the library’s adult literacy program, volunteers help lifelong learners build skills necessary to join the community of readers — a journey that also opens the way to opportunities for more education and the better jobs and lives that come with it.  READ MORE @

I
am grateful and honored to be a volunteer tutor and writing facilitator for the Newport / Mesa ProLiteracy Program of The Newport Beach Library. The invaluable experience I have gained seeing our Learners go from beginners to advanced stages in English Language Development is gratifying and beyond words. I give much of the credit to our Director, Cherall Weiss and staff for developing a program designed to encourage and provide each Learner with the necessary tools to achieve their goals.

Huntington Beach Library :: Recognizing our Best ~ Central Literacy Awards Event

Recognizing our Best ~ Central Awards Event

June 13, 2017, was Literacy Volunteers' Annual Awards Event, where learners and tutors received recognition for their exemplary work and the new Board of Directors was voted in. Following the theme of "What is Black & White & READ All Over?" the room was appropriately decorated in theme colors, including the dessert table, with a delicious array of black, white, and red pastries and desserts. In the center of each table, books with specially made black & white covers were arranged, each representing a novel read by one of our learners or tutors.

Literacy Specialist Diane Moseley led the evening by presenting awards to tutors and learners who had shown special growth during the year. Top honors went to The CONVERSATION CLASSES, led by Barbara Robertson and Lynn Bryant. While both Barbara and Lynn give kudos to their learners, we commend the efforts of these two who have given so much to their classes, which have become a vibrant hub of activity and learning.

The honorable Mayor of Huntington Beach, Barbara Delgleize, joined us for the entire evening, offering to present the awards. We are grateful to our city's #1 citizen for honoring Literacy Volunteers and recognizing the work that we do. It was a thrill for all the winners to have their picture taken with Barbara, making the night even more special.  READ MORE @
