Huntington Beach Library :: Student Writing

OPEN DOORS: November 2014

Student Writing
"Before I took the computer classes, it was very difficult to even type my library card number into the library computers. There were many barriers, like where do I erase? How do I make capital letters? How do I move the cursor? Thanks to the computer classes, I can now send and receive emails from my son's school and he has my help to study through the internet on his tablet. I can communicate with my friends in Mexico with Facebook. I know how to send photos and I can practice typing on typingweb.com. I study English with Duolingo. I receive information from our family clinic and can request our medications online. I have helped my husband search online for jobs and I can make Word documents, insert pictures and send them by email. I have found projects for my children's homework on Google and I use YouTube to perfect my recipes and learn how to create different hairstyles for my daughter. In reality, without the help of the library, none of this would be possible. Thank you so much! Sincerely, Martha"

Carlsbad Library: City Council Honors Given Literacy Services

City Council Honors Given
Carlsbad City Library Literacy Services
Learning Connection: Nov/Dec 2014

On Tuesday, September 9th, the Mayor and City Council of Carlsbad presented a Proclamation to Heather Pizutto and Carrie Scott, recognizing September as Adult Literacy Awareness month in honor of the 30th anniversary of the California Library Literacy Services and our program. Nyla, a learner in Literacy Services, also spoke about her experience.

The Proclamation reads:
Whereas, the City of Carlsbad recognizes the need for educated and informed residents to meet the challenges of an increasingly technological society; and

Whereas, Carlsbad City Library Literacy Services is a proud member of the California Library Literacy Services program, and both are celebrating 30 years of changing lives for the better; and

Whereas, Literacy Services provides opportunities for adults to improve their reading, writing and computer skills to meet their life goals; and

Whereas, volunteers generously and patiently donate over 11,000 hours annually to help adults improve their skills; and

Whereas, adult learners enrolled in the Literacy Services program contribute to Carlsbad becoming a world-class city by improving their job skills, reading to their children and voting.

Now, Therefore, I, Matt Hall, Mayor of the City of Carlsbad, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby join the State of California in proclaiming the month of September 2014 as Adult Literacy Awareness Month in the City of Carlsbad and commend and congratulate all of our volunteers, learners and supporters who promote literacy in our community.

Riverside County Library :: American Dream Starts @ your library® Grant Allows California Library to Expand ESL Classes

American Dream Starts @ your library® Grant Allows California Library to Expand ESL Classes
@yourLibrary: 10.12.2014 by Steve Zalusky

A California library system is providing opportunities for patrons who wish to expand their horizons by learning English.

Through an American Dream Starts @ your library grant awarded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to the American Library Association, the Riverside County (Calif.) Library System has been able to expand ESL classes for adult learners.

In this countywide program, volunteers are working with one-on-one tutoring to help individuals learn to read and write.

In the county, which is spread over 7,200 square miles, it is estimated that there are over 50,000 people in Riverside County who are eligible for citizenship. However, there are several barriers in their way. One barrier to citizenship is being able to speak, read and write English in order to take the Citizenship Exam.

This community-based program that changes not only improves students’ lives, but also those of their families.

One of the students, Laura Serrano, a mother of two children whose first language is Spanish, said learning is English is important in order to get a good job.

“This program is very good for me, because it’s free, it’s close to my house, I have very good teachers,” she said.  READ MORE !

National Young Readers Week: November 10 - 14

an annual event that was co-founded in 1989 by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. To make this week special, many schools recruit local "celebrities" to read aloud a favorite children's book to classrooms. Classrooms can also listen to a free story each day courtesy of BOOK IT! and One More Story. To fire up reading for the entire school, principals are encouraged to take one day out of the week and read from bell to bell for the Principal Challenge.
