Blast Into Reading !
Open Doors: July/August
2016 by Susie Hodge Literacy Volunteers—HBPL
75 learners, tutors, literacy
staff and friends of literacy gathered at Central
Library to celebrate and acknowledge accomplishments during the past year.
The room was decorated in traditional red, white and blue to evoke both the
BLAST INTO READING theme, as well as the upcoming 4th of July holiday. Tutors
received 5, 10, 15, or 20-year pins in recognition of their volunteer years,
with Dionne Cox, former tutor and board member and current Library Board
Trustee, was honored for volunteering 20 years with literacy services. Dionne
continues be active with the program by spearheading the Duck-a-thon.
Thanks and congratulations to
her and all the tutors who give so freely and generously of their time and
expertise.
Learner awards included
special pins and journals for those whose learners who worked extra hard
throughout the year, participated in SCLLN's Writer-to-Writer Challenge, or
earned their citizenship.
The annual June celebration
of achievement culminates a year of hard work and dedication of tutors and
learners alike. Goals are achieved in the form of getting a job, obtaining
citizenship, reading a book or writing to an author. Literacy Services
continues to strive forward as new tutors join the program with determination
to transform one life at a time. A huge hug of thanks goes out to tutors and to
their learners, whose lives are changed the moment they step over the literacy
threshold.
