A Celebration of Learning
Learning Connection:
July/August 2017
Approximately 50 tutors, learners, family members
and friends enjoyed Literacy Services’ annual celebration on
May 21 at the Carlsbad Senior Center. This event was held to congratulate our
literacy learners on their accomplishments, recognize our volunteer tutors for
their outstanding dedication and thank the City for its support. The program
started with a slide show of our accomplishments during the year, followed by
remarks from Library Director Heather Pizzuto and Program Coordinator Carrie
Scott. Tutors and learners shared what the program means to them. Guests
enjoyed light refreshments and took home a gift of chocolates and a bookmark donated
by Library Board Member Beth Hulsart.
During the past fiscal year, volunteers
contributed 11,000 hours helping learners reach their goals, from reading an
entire book for the first time to helping their children with homework. Nearly
half of the learners met a job-related goal. Improved skills lead to personal
success that, in turn, creates a stronger community. Currently, over 66 tutor/
learner pairs meet twice per week to work on reading and writing skills.
Library Director Heather Pizzuto paid special
tribute to the program’s longest-serving volunteer, Betty Groves, who passed
away in December 2016 at the age of 102.
Betty served 22 years as a tutor in the literacy
program, helping over 20 adult learners and countless high school students to
achieve their goals. READ MORE @
