Adult Literacy Volunteer
Volunteer literacy tutors work one-on-one with adult learners in a library setting. Training hours and a minimum six month commitment are required.  Tutors meet with learners once or twice per week for 1 to 2 hour sessions.

If you can read and write fluently, you can help an adult to read, write or speak English better. Literacy Volunteers - HBPL has tutor training workshops throughout the year. -=The 15-hour class teaches Literacy Volunteers of America methods for helping adults improve their skills. After taking the class, you are matched with one adult student. You meet two hours a week, morning, afternoon, evening or weekend.

The Huntington Beach Library Adult Literacy Program has a collection of teaching materials, a computer lab and space in the library for tutor pairs to meet.

We have two programs, the Adult Literacy Program at Central Library (714) 375-5102 and the Family Literacy Program at the Oak View Branch Library (714) 375-5104.

We always need tutors!

Adult Learner Leadership Institute Success Story By Veronica Torres

I came to Los Angeles with my mother when I was 12 years old. Since I lived in a Latino neighborhood where everyone spoke Spanish, I never learned to speak or read well. I thought then that it wasn’t important. When I got to be an adult, I realized that you need three things to live well in this country: to read, to speak and to drive, but at that time I could not read or write an email. I might recognize two words out of every sentence. I would have to ask my niece or a friend to read them to me and then I had no privacy. As an adult, I knew that this wasn’t normal and I got sick of it. I felt depressed, low - on the floor.

I have been attending Adult Literacy Tutoring programs at the Washington Irving Library Branch, since 2016, where I had the pleasure to meet Julie Christenson, the coordinator. When she suggested that I attend the ALLI leadership program, I didn’t hesitate to submit the application. A few weeks after I applied, my application was approved, and in April 2017 I had the opportunity to attend the three-day weekend program in Carlsbad, Ca.

It was my first train ride. I was given a nice room at the Holiday Inn with other learners. Both learners and staff were surprised to see someone from LA as I was the first person from LA to attend. I met other adult learners from other regions and together we learned about the role of leadership in Adult literacy. We learned about goal setting, building self-esteem and how to get along with other people. These are important skills for leaders to have. The conference gave me the confidence that I need to accomplish my goals, to advocate for the literacy program, and to become a mentor in my community.

In October, I was invited to return to the ALLI conference in 2018 being held in the City of Redlands to make a presentation to this years’ learners.

I’m excited and looking forward! None of this would be possible without Julie’s love, encouragement and belief in my potential, and I also consider myself lucky to have Melinda Ratlif, my wonderful tutor.  READ MORE >>

For many, high school graduation is a rite of passage, but sometimes circumstances prevent students from getting a diploma.

We talked with one man who, at the age of 56, is seeing his dream of earning a diploma come true thanks to the County Library and his hard work.
You can apply to Career Online High School over at the Library’s website.

Enrollment is limited and the demand is expected to be high. Adults must successfully pass an online self-assessment and prerequisite course, as well as an in-person interview to become an applicant in the program.

Learning Connection: March/April 2018

At a recent tutor orientation, I told a story of a 71-year-old learner who enrolled in Carlsbad City Library’s Literacy program. One of the attendees asked, "Can she really learn at that age?"

The answer is a resounding "Yes!" In fact, the learner went on to earn her high school diploma.

Research shows that the brain is elastic—meaning that it can adapt, change and reorganize, regardless of age. However, if you’ve tried to learn something new, such as a language, hobby, sport or simply how to use a smartphone, it can be frustrating. We want to learn, and we want to learn now.

In this issue of the Learning Connection, you'll discover how adults learn, tips for working with individual strengths when learning something new, and tutoring ideas from our diligent pairs.

As a tutor, I feel that I can best communicate the meaning of words using Kinesthetic Intelligence. I find it easier sometimes to express word meaning through expression and gestures. ~ Tutor Lora B.

I feel I learn best when I use my interpersonal/social intelligence. I have been able to grasp the English language more easily through conversation. Through discussion with my tutor, it helps me use words in proper context and to memorize words more easily. ~ Learner Ying H.

Souad’s big goal is to pass the U.S. Citizenship test. We use word lists to help her prepare for the reading/writing portion of the test. Souad can read all the highlighted words and is making progress every week. ~ Tutor Sylvia W.

The Phono-Graphix program has been very useful to help Brenda learn sounds and new words. Every one of our sessions also includes a spelling test. I also ask Brenda to use each new vocabulary word in a sentence to make sure she understands the definition.
