Monrovia Library :: Community Feud Literacy Fundraiser :: Feb 26

Community Feud :: Monrovia Library
2017 Team Up! Dream Up! for Literacy Event
February 26  :: 1pm

A fun filled afternoon of team competition in a game show format with silent and live auctions! All proceeds benefit the Monrovia Public Library Literacy Services Program.

The annual Literacy Fundraiser helps raise thousands of dollars each year for programs designed to teach adults to read and to capture the imagination of our young readers.  Donations from previous fundraisers have been used to establish a Makerspace to build technology literacy skills, a curated collection of materials for adults learning how to read, America Learns software that supports literacy tutors with lesson plans and teaching strategies, as well as iPads and apps for those struggling with learning disabilities.

The Monrovia Public Library Literacy program was created to serve all ages. It builds early literacy skills with storytimes, Barks & Books for reluctant readers, and the Summer Reading Program that ensures children, teens, and adults keep reading over the summer months.  Teens, many of whom are active on our Teen Advisory Board, share their love of reading with younger kids at readers’ theaters performances throughout the year. For our adults, we offer one-on-one tutoring, Culture and Conversation classes, financial and health literacy workshops, GED prep, citizenship coaches, and job skills building both in-person and online.

The Literacy Program transforms lives by ensuring that everyone can experience the joys of reading and lifelong learning.

Glendora Library :: Great Trivia Challenge

Great Trivia Challenge 25
Glendora Library Literacy
February 25 :: 5 pm

Approximately 6000 adults living in the city of Glendora do not have the literacy skills required to independently manage daily activities at home and work. They are unable to achieve personal, educational, and professional goals.

It is highly likely that you know one of these adults with or without being aware of it. Adults with low literacy skills can be strategic at keeping this information hidden because it can be embarrassing, even shameful, to them. Many learn to compensate by listening effectively, observing carefully, memorizing efficiently, and devising ways to quietly depend upon others.

Burbank Library :: Zonta Club's team wins Burbank Library's Trivia Challenge

Zonta Club's team wins Burbank Library's Trivia Challenge
Burbank Leader:  4.09.2016 by Anthony Clark Carpio

For the last 18 years, members of the Zonta Club of Burbank have competed in the Burbank Library's Trivia Challenge, but they had never taken home the trophy.

After answering a slew of questions — some easier than others — and a small kerfuffle with the judges, the women-empowerment organization finally became champions Thursday night at the Ritz Banquet Hall in St. Leon's Cathedral.

About 100 people attended the fundraiser for the Burbank Library's literacy program, which offers free one-on-one tutoring for adults who read or write below an eighth-grade level.

"This is a demonstration of our commitment to literacy, the library and this community, which we are all a part of," Zonta Club member Nickie Bonner said after posing for photos with a medal around her neck.

The audience tried guessing the answers to the questions, which were asked by Drew Sugars, Burbank's public information officer.  READ MORE @

Now it is a community-loved tradition that promotes friendly competition to support the Glendora Library. Mr. Trivia, Thom Hill, asks a series of increasingly difficult trivia questions to determine a winner.

Huntington Beach Library :: Wine & Words ~ An Evening to Remember

Wine & Words ~ An Evening to Remember
Open Doors: November 2015

As the title states, it was an evening of Wine & Words, and it was so much more! Literacy Volunteers' 3rd wine tasting fundraiser was held at the Waterfront Beach Resort, A Hilton Hotel, on October 23rd, and was filled with fine wines, delicious appetizers, inspiring guest speakers and lots of auction action.

Dozens of dazzlingly wrapped silent auction items lined the wall like glittering mini stars, each sending soundless "CHOOSE ME" messages to scrutinizing bidders. The specially chosen wines and food parings, prepared by the hotel chef exclusively for our event, complimented each other perfectly. As guests imbibed, munched and chatted, they studied the silent auction and opportunity drawing, secretly hoping to win the goodies of their choice.

Of course, it wasn't all about drinking, eating and winning stuff. The highlights of the evening were the speakers. The audience sat spellbound as they heard Marisa's and Elizabeth's heartwarming stories of their challenges and successes while increasing their English literacy skills. Huntington Beach resident and author Chris Epting shared fascinating local history anecdotes, and cookie entrepreneur Jason Mercado spoke us of his journey from the east coast to the Oscars.  READ MORE !
