International Literacy Day promotes computer, language tutoring for residents

Holtville resident Guadalupe Charles had never turned on a computer before Monday.

After an hour-long one-on-one tutoring session at the Holtville Meyer Memorial Branch of the Imperial County Free Library, he knew the basics such as how to use the mouse and navigate through the computer to get online and use different websites. Charles was just one resident learning computer literacy on International Literacy Day.

“Literacy is not just Spanish or English,” library volunteer Thomas Rose said. “It ties in with adult literacy if you’re computer-illiterate.”

Rose said he has been teaching people in their 50s or 60s computer skills because they want to learn how to use it for their everyday lives. This includes ordering things online and sending e-mails to family or friends.

“We are now in the computer age, and I need to learn,” said Troy Spore, who has been in tutoring lessons for about four months. “I’ve picked up quite a bit, but there’s still a lot to learn.”

County Librarian Connie Barrington said literacy is a crucial issue in the Valley.

“We’ve got hundreds … of people who want to improve their reading, writing and conversations in English,” she said.

As a volunteer tutor herself, she said it’s “literally the most rewarding thing” she has done. Volunteers are desperately needed for the literacy program, she said, which can make such a difference in people’s lives.  READ MORE !

Adult Literacy Program in Redlands hosts volunteer meeting

The Redlands City Council has declared this Monday as Adult Literacy Day in the city of Redlands.

The city’s action coincides with Gov. Jerry Brown’s declaring September Adult Literacy Awareness Month. The California Library Literacy Services (CLLS) estimates that more than 4 million California adults have low literacy skills, making if difficult for these adults to read a news article, a story to their children, job applications or the instructions on a medicine bottle.

The 2010 Census found that 11 percent of the adult population served by the A.K. Smiley Public Library in Redlands lacks a high school diploma.

The Redlands Adult Literacy Program, sponsored by the Friends of the A.K. Smiley Public Library, provides free professional tutoring to people 18 and older who want to improve their reading and writing. The program now has 70 tutor-learner teams who work together to help meet the learners’ reading and writing goals. Recently, several learners graduated from the program to go to community college or work at a new job.  READ MORE !

Life in Newport Beach without the skills to communicate in English left one woman feeling like a hamster running on a wheel in a cage. Another woman described endless days surfing the Internet, too uncomfortable to step foot outside her home. Another said she spent her entire childhood and part of her adult life finding ways to fool her family, teachers and friends into thinking she could read and tell time.

The women — all “learners” with the Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy organization — spoke today in the Central Library Friends Room as part of a celebration of International Literacy Day. A standing-room only crowd of about 150 people shared foods from around the world as well as literacy accomplishments.

“Literacy is a hard word when you can’t read,” said Marnalee Lopez, who described trying to read a flier about literacy services 20 years ago. She studied for awhile, she said, then returned to the ProLiteracy program in Newport Beach when her triplets were in fourth grade.

“I realized they were becoming smarter than I was,” she said. “And that wasn’t going to happen.”

Lopez received the Rochelle Hoffman Memorial Award, given each year to a standout learner in the Literacy Services program. The award is named for a Corona del Mar woman who volunteered as a tutor before her death in 2004.  READ MORE !

The Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy celebrated International Literacy Day today in the Central Library Friends Room, where a standing-room only crowd of about 100 people gathered to share foods from around the world as well as literacy accomplishments.

Isabel Sevilla, 35, of Costa Mesa, was honored with the Rochelle Hoffman Memorial Award, given each year to a standout “learner” in the Literacy Services program. The award is named for a Corona del Mar woman who volunteered as a tutor before her death in 2004.

Sevilla moved from Mexico in 2000 and has worked as a nanny, but her grasp of only basic conversational English was holding her back, she said in an interview before the ceremony.

The library’s literacy program was established in 1986 and trains about 50 tutors each year. Currently, the program has 112 active tutors, 132 active learners and 23 learners on waiting list. READ MORE !

International Literacy Day: September 8

International Literacy Day kicks off Friday

HOLTVILLE — As libraries across the nation prepare for International Literacy Day, Imperial County librarian Connie Barrington said she hopes to inspire others to take an interest in literacy during a celebration at the Imperial County Free Library, Holtville Meyer Memorial Branch here Friday.

“We hope to highlight literacy concerns in the Valley and encourage others to volunteer,” Barrington said.

The annual event will consist of several public readings ranging from children’s literature to more sophisticated literature, explained Barrington.

With the demand for teaching literacy in the Valley increasing, Barrington said she hopes the festivities will also motivate others to take an initiative within their own education and the education of their fellow neighbor.

“One of the most rewarding feelings I’ve experienced was as a tutor,” Barrington said.

Barrington said she hopes the festivities will bring about more volunteers to the literacy program and encourage individuals age 16 and older to volunteer and help make a difference in an individual’s life.

The free event is open to the public and is from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, with a special guest speaker reading a selection of their choice during the event.

“It’s important to celebrate literature,” she said.

The exhibit at Linnaea’s that combines art with text is nothing new, as Picasso and cohorts explored such methods during their Synthetic Cubism period 100 years ago.

It’s an intriguing concept, however, and a refreshing change. It also ties in with National Literacy Month and the Art of the Book exhibits at local libraries.

Ursula Black’s disturbing painting includes a poem she wrote “All the rest of us took text from someone else,” said Lena Rushing, show organizer.

Although the Dadaist European artistic and literary movement of the early 20th Century used text, its intent was to mock conventional art. That is not this exhibit’s thrust. Rather this exhibit intends to honor the written word, whether it’s literature, lyrics, poetry, or famous quotes.

“Even if you’re not somebody who reads a lot, you’re probably moved by lyrics, or recall a book from childhood,” said Rushing.

Among her many entries are two paintings based on Lewis Carroll’s nonsense poem “Jabberwocky.” Rushing’s mother had once painted the imaginary figure from “Through the Looking Glass” on an apartment wall, and later a photo of that work appeared in Rushing’s various childhood homes. Her brother even got a tattoo of the monster. READ MORE !

Reading is usually a solitary endeavor. But on Tuesday, International Literacy Day, readers from all over the world showed how books can bring people together.

The Friends of the A.K. Smiley Public Library held an open house Tuesday evening to highlight the importance of literacy, reading and writing. The open house also shared information about the adult literacy program.

"It's a wide spectrum of things," said Trudy Waldron, the volunteer coordinator for the adult literature program.

Several local speakers shared their knowledge of other countries' literature and talked about their experiences with reading and interpreting foreign literature.

The event was "one more way to get our message out," said Waldron.

One in five adults in the United States lack the ability to read and function at the appropriate level, she said.

"Our community has its fair share of people who need extra help," she added. READ MORE !

Effy Sanchez knew she needed to learn English — really learn to read and write and speak it — when her son was 5 years old and they were shopping at Kmart.

“He stopped me and he said, very loud, ‘You need to learn English,’” Sanchez said. “That made me so embarrassed. I knew in my head the first time I needed to learn English.”

Sanchez was born in Mexico and moved to the United States 26 years ago, but learning a second language always proved too difficult until a supervisor told her about the Newport Beach Public Library Literacy Services program. Her tutor, Vicky Smith, worked with her, helping her learn new words, grammar and how to read.

Today, Sanchez received the Rochelle Hoffman Memorial Award, given each year to a standout “learner” in the Literacy Services program. The award is named for a Corona del Mar woman who volunteered as a tutor before her death in 2004. Her daughters, Renee Hoffman Heath and Risa Hoffman, attended the event.

Sanchez lives in Costa Mesa and is a beacon for her community, Smith said during the ceremony today in the Friends Room of the Central Library. About 70 people attended the event, which was part of a celebration of International Literacy Day.

The library’s literacy program was established in 1986 and currently has 151 learners and 110 volunteer tutors. About 50 tutors are trained each year, but the program has about 30 people on a waiting list, said Cherall Weiss, literary services coordinator. READ MORE !

California Library Literacy Services (CLLS) is a program of the California State Library. The mission of CLLS is to enable Californians of all ages to reach their literacy goals and use library services effectively. The Friends of the A.K. Smiley Public Library will hold an open house celebrating International Literacy Day from 5-7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Assembly Room of the A.K. Smiley Public Library, 125 W. Vine St., Redlands.

The Friends of the Library are sponsoring the event to highlight the importance of reading and writing in the United States and throughout the world as a pathway to promote employment, ensure good health and reduce crime.
The theme of the event is "Books are our passport to the world." International desserts and coffee will be served.

Carey Curtis Smith, who is a new volunteer with the Redlands Adult Literacy Program, will be a featured speaker. Smith was selected in 2005 as one of Inland Empire Magazine's top 12 artists.

Smith plans to speak about "the connectivity of books, language and the degrees of separation that can thread them, often unawares, into one's life."

Today is International Literacy Day, and it has always been somewhat shocking to know that 1 in 7 adults in the United States is functionally illiterate. That is, they have reading and writing skills that are inadequate to cope with the demands of everyday life.

One of my first stories as a professional journalist was writing a feature story about the literacy program at the Mendocino County Public Library. The program's coordinator introduced me to four of her clients and it opened my eyes to the problem, made so clear in books by writers and social activists such as Jonathan Kozol, author of "Death at an Early Age" (1967).

International Literacy Day is September 8, 2010 and to celebrate the Highland Literacy Coalition is hosting Mary Skillings Prigger, a local children’s author who is also a professor at California State University San Bernardino. She has written two beloved books by children titled “Aunt Minnie McGranahan” and “Aunt Minnie and the Twister”.

The Haiku workshop will be hands on and interactive, providing a basic introduction to "haiku," an ancient poetic form originating in Japan and now practice all over the world. Participants will be introduced to many different examples, discuss the basic characteristics of the form, learn to write their own and come away with references for their future pursuits. No previous experience with "haiku" or poetry is required to enjoy this session.

The Stanislaus Literacy Center, for instance, served 1,400 adults in 2009-10. But because many programs elsewhere have been eliminated, the waiting list for our programs continues to grow.

With ever-increasing needs and shrinking finances, I encourage people to think about volunteering to help with classes and tutoring to help our adults gain the skills they need.

Today's Bee contains a supplement, "Literacy More Essential Now," that is being published in conjunction with International Literacy Day. It is filled with success stories of students who have attended adult education programs. It also has contacts for adult education programs offered by nonprofits and school districts.

I hope you will read it and be inspired to support literacy by volunteering or donating so others will be able to read what you are reading now.

Literally Speaking: Autumn 2009

More than 140 people from the literacy program, library staff, and the Newport Beach community attended the International Literacy Day (ILD) celebration on September 10th. As in previous years, attendees were treated to wonderful, ethnic foods prepared by literacy program learners. To complete the buffet, the Corona del Mar Starbucks provided coffee, and Bristol Farms generously donated a gorgeous and tasty fruit and cheese display.

Carolyn Scheer, Literacy Board President, emceed the event. Cynthia Cowell, Library Director, graciously commended all involved in the literacy program. Newport Beach Mayor, Ed Selich, before reading the proclamation declaring Literacy Day for the city, commended tutors for their commitment and learners for their courage – which was then demonstrated by Jerry Kahn and Afsaneh Taheri Pak as they both spoke movingly about their experiences with the literacy program.

Jerry highlighted the variety of books that he and his tutor, Joe Brown, have read together, and explained what a typical tutoring session for them looks like. Afsaneh eloquently shared of her shame, after arriving in the United States just a year ago from Iran, at not being able to speak English well. She shared how it felt to leave her safe zone of home, family, and tradition and commit to a new life. Afsaneh affirmed that being new is always hard and that she has a goal to learn and keep on learning.

Parvin Tabrizi, the 2009 winner of the Rochelle Hoffman Memorial Award presented at the celebration, also received certificates of recognition from both Congressman John Campbell and Senator Tom Harmon.

It was a touching and inspirational morning.

Upland Public Library - Adult Literacy Program

is a site of the West End Literacy League, a joint program between the Rancho Cucamonga and Upland Public Libraries. Since its inception in 1989, the Adult Literacy program has helped over 1,000 English-speaking adults improve their basic reading and writing skills, and the program can help you or someone you know. Adult learners are matched with trained volunteers for free one-to-one tutoring. Instruction is based on the learner's needs and goals.

Adult Literacy Reading Club

Adult learners discuss books and meet other aspiring readers in their own book club, which began on October 3, 2006. Each book club member receives a free copy of the book to be discussed. Please check the Library Calendar for specific dates. Grant restrictions limit participation to adult literacy learners and tutors only; please contact the Literacy Office to pre-register, (909) 931-4212.

Ready-Set-Read

As an outreach service, the Upland Literacy Program coordinates the "Books for Babies" project. This is a joint effort to nurture literacy at an early age by providing a Ready-Set-Read kit to new parents who visit the San Antonio Community Hospital's Healthy Beginnings Family Care Center. These bilingual (English/Spanish) kits provide information about the benefits of reading to baby, tips on how to read to baby, a list of appropriate titles, a list of parenting books, information about the four participating libraries, a board book, and a coupon to be redeemed for another board book at any one of the four libraries. The Upland Public Library, in partnership with the Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, and San Bernardino County Libraries, provides the "Read-Set-Read" Kits. Ventura County Library

The Reading Instruction for Adults provides free one-to-one reading and writing tutoring by trained volunteers throughout Ventura County. The Ventura County Library has been offering this service since 1984, when it was one of the original public libraries to join the California Literacy Campaign. Our administrative costs are part of the Ventura County Library's budget. Additional funding comes from ongoing collaborative agreements with Ventura Adult School, Oxnard Adult School, various cities and the Sheriff's Department. State grants and donations from government, business, and service organizations enable us to help about 500 individuals each year.

Tutoring takes place in libraries, school, community, and jail facilities throughout Ventura County. These sites are managed by part-time professional educators, referred to as site managers. They are available during specified times to assess learners reading levels, interview tutors, match students and tutors, recommend teaching materials and provide support for learning partners.

Lompoc Public Library

Adult Reading Program was established at the Lompoc Public Library in1989 to provide basic reading and writing instruction to adults with low literacy skills. The goal of the program is to reduce illiteracy in Lompoc and promote life-long learning. The program offers one-to-one and small group tutoring through the use of professionally trained volunteers. Volunteers are the key to the success of the program. They contribute 5,000 hours of volunteer service each year. Unlike classroom instruction, library based literacy instruction is entirely student centered with lessons developed to support each learner's unique goals, such as getting a drivers license, passing the citizenship test, obtaining new or improved employment, or passing the GED. Since the program's inception over a thousand Lompoc residents have improved their literacy skills and reached their personal goals.

Using data released from the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy and the 2000 census figures, it is estimated that 21.6% of adults in Lompoc are functioning at the below basic level and therefore lack the necessary skills to accomplish everyday activities like filling out a job application, reading the directions on a medicine bottle, writing a personal check, or reading a simple bedtime story to their child. However mundane these tasks may seem, they can be frustrating and nearly impossible for someone who is illiterate.

Reach Out and Read

To promote the values associated with early literacy and to reach out to underprivileged families, the Library partnered with the Santa Barbara Public Health Department in 2003 to establish a Reach Out and Read (ROR) Program. ROR is a pediatric literacy program that promotes early literacy development and the importance of reading aloud to parents at well child checkups. The program also provides free books and storytimes for low income patients who attend the clinic. Volunteers, particularly Spanish-speaking, are needed to read to children one or two hours a week on Wednesdays & Fridays.

LAPL Adult Literacy Program

Work one on one with an adult tutor to improve your reading and literacy skills. Tutors meet with students in any branch of the Los Angeles Public Library. This service is free. They meet twice a week for 1 to 1½ hours at a time for a minimum of six months.

Lessons are individualized, confidential, and highly-goal oriented. Tutors structure the learning process around the goals of the learner, using materials that relate to those goals. Downey Mayor Dave Gafin last week proclaimed the month of September 2008 as Literacy Month.

The proclamation is premised, he said, on the following considerations:

1) More than 27 % of adults in the Los Angeles area are capable of reading only simple words and sentences.

2) Literacy issues severely impact the lives of families in the area of work, school and their full participation in all the benefits of Downey residents.

3) Volunteers in the Downey City Library Adult Literacy Program give of themselves to help students reach their goals by providing free help in the areas of basic reading and writing skills.

“I urge fellow citizens to learn more about the importance of literacy and to become involved with literacy in our community,” he said.

Downey Library - Literacy Month 2007

More on Literacy Month: Donna's update: I spent Monday evening at the Downey Public Library talking about My California with a very enthusiastic group that included many of the city's volunteer reading tutors.

Librarian Claudia Dailey mentioned a surprising statistic: that 27 percent of adults in Los Angeles County are not fully literate. So Claudia and her wonderful band of volunteers spend countless hours all year long helping other adults improve their reading skills.

I'm delighted that the library's tutors and their students are all diving into the narrative travel stories in the My California anthology. And I can't think of a better way to inspire people to read than sharing the work of these 27 great writers.
