Newport Beach Library :: Learner's Corner

Learner’s Corner

Literally Speaking: May/June 2016

If I were a writer, I would probably be writing such books as The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. Or for example, Sounder William H. Armstrong. I learned about these books at the lessons Writing workshop from my teacher Sylvia. These two books have a common idea to show the strength of the human spirit. And just about how people survive in difficult conditions for them.

Sounder
Sounder is American novel by H. William Armstrong. This book about young AfricanAmerican boy and his family, who lived on plantation in the South during the 19th century. His dog Sounder helped him and his poor family survive during hard time life. This novel show the courage, love and faith that bind an African-American family together despite the racism inhumanity they face.

Another book called The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. This simple
The Old Man
and the Sea
story, dramatic and suspenseful about old deep-sea fisherman who named Santiago and who lived off the fishing villages along the Cuban coast. After 84 days without a fish the old man caught on the hook for a huge Marlin. The old man was left alone in a fight with a huge fish, the ocean and a bunch of sharks. He was able to survive and return to the beach with a huge fish skeleton.

On our lesson, we read the synopsis of the book, got acquainted with the biography of the author. And then Sylvia brought a book and we read some chapters of the text. Together we discussed the main idea of the book and shared their impressions. It was all very interesting and informative.

I am very grateful to Sylvia for these interesting lessons, where I met with outstanding American writers Ernest Hemingway and William H. Armstrong and their books. I’d want to read them whole and tell about them to my friends. Sviatlana Kandybovich

Newport Beach Library :: Helene Chaban: Spirit of Volunteerism Awards 2016

Helene Chaban:
Spirit of Volunteerism Awards 2016
Newport/Mesa Proliteracy
OneOC: 3.08.2016

Helene joined our program just two years ago as a volunteer tutor. In this time, she has taken on more and more responsibility. Helen began in the program by tutoring one adult learner. Soon, she took on another and another; teaching them not only literacy skills but changing their lives with her life skills lessons and friendship. In 2015, Helene stepped up to chair our annual fundraising event, The Gift of Literacy Luncheon. Her calm leadership and innate style inspired the committee and the community to support Newport/Mesa
ProLiteracy, making the 2015 luncheon one of our most successful. Helene has not stopped here… always looking for the next mountain, she has now started to volunteer at the Friends of the Library bookstore where she will make a huge impact. Helene has been a terrific asset to our program in so many ways. Her leadership, enthusiasm, and calm under pressure is a lesson to all of us to be the best we can in whatever we do.

Newport Beach Library :: Exciting 1-Day Workshops :: Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy

Exciting 1-Day Workshops ~ Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy
Literally Speaking: Nov/Dec 2015

Craft Workshop
Tutor Joy Faigan led a successful one day workshop where learners were given the opportunity to discover their creativity. The 1-day Craft Workshop consisted of decorating personal notebooks with different kinds of embellishments and designs. Learners brought in their own recycled greeting cards and any other decorations to repurpose. Although the craft itself is enjoyable, the primary focus is to provide an environment open to instruction, discussion and conversation. The craft workshops are in such high demand that Joy has graciously offered to make them a monthly workshop. Each craft will focus on the month’s celebratory holiday. Look for the next workshop on November 13.

Civic Center Sculpture Garden Tour
Tutor Marcia Drew led a group of learners on a tour of the Newport Beach Civic Center’s Sculpture Exhibition.  The exhibition, which contains 20 temporary installations, was a great opportunity for learners to share their thoughts about art. Marcia shared fascinating information about the installations and their artists. The learners appreciated visiting and admiring eight of the twenty installations and were able to write about their favorite pieces. Look for more local tour opportunities like this in the near future.  READ MORE !

Newport Beach Library :: International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day :: Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy
Literally Speaking: September/October 2015

Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy proudly held their annual event to celebrate adult literacy and the program participants.  The International Literacy Day event invites the NMPL family of tutors, learners and volunteers to come together with members of the community to celebrate adult literacy. On September 10, 2015, a gathering of nearly 150 guests listened to heartwarming stories, inspiring speeches and enjoyed a delicious selection of food from many different countries from all over the world provided by the adult learners.

Renee Hoffman Heath and Risa Hoffman for keeping their
mother's legacy going by allowing us to continue the Hoffman
Award for our learners. This year's winners are Maja Kuta and
Carmen Caicedo who, with their tutors Tanya Gulati and Allan
                                            Segal, accomplished some amazing goals.

Advisory Board member Roman Darmer welcomed guests and spoke of the importance of literacy.  Roman introduced Newport Beach Public Library Director Tim Hetherton, who emphasized the importance of literacy and libraries.

Newport Beach Mayor Ed Selich took to the podium to present a special proclamation designating September as Literacy Awareness month.

Adult learner, Crystal Huang, shared her experience of traveling with her family from Taipei, Taiwan in search of a better education environment for her son. Her son has since attained a postgraduate degree. Crystal joined the Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy program in early 2015 and aspires to one day work at an orphanage and help others.

Literacy Coordinator Cherall Weiss then introduced Risa Hoffman and Renee Hoffman-Heath, daughters of the late Rochelle Hoffman for whom the Memorial Award was named. They spoke of their mother’s dedication and love of tutoring.  They introduced the two winners of this year’s Hoffman Award.
-Ms. Hoffman introduced volunteer tutor, Ms. Tanya Gulati, who spoke to the audience about her learner, Maja Kuta’s tremendous accomplishments. Maja graciously thanked Tanya and expressed her difficulties with dyslexia and how NMPL has helped her reach her goals. She spoke about her artistic passion and how the program has assisted her in pursuing her dreams. Maja signed a deal as an artist for a comic book, and is grateful to be given such an extraordinary opportunity.

Next, the guests were introduced to tutor Alan Segal and his learner Carmen Caicedo, who is originally from Venezuela. She entered the program at a 2nd grade reading level and through her hard work is now at a 5th grade level. NMPL has enabled her to be confident in her abilities to speak and write in English.  Carmen shared her new goal with the group: to become a nurse.

Following the speakers, Cherall Weiss closed with a reminder that illiteracy is all around us and it is thanks to the many volunteers that, day by day, people’s lives are being changed for the better.

Each attendee was presented with a copy of In Our Own Words, a collection of stories and essays written by learners in the Literacy Program. They were also given a key to remind them to help ‘unlock the potential.’
Guests enjoyed a delicious fruit and cheese arrangement donated by Bristol Farms and exciting new beverages donated by drinkNeuro.

Newport Beach Library : : Literacy Day Celebration - September 10

International Literacy Day
Literally Speaking: July/August 2015

International Literacy Day, traditionally observed each year on September 8, focuses attention on worldwide literacy needs. More than 780 million of the world’s adults (nearly two-thirds of whom are women) do not know how to read or write.

Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy uses International Literacy Day as an opportunity to focus on the tremendous strides our adult learners have made in reaching their goals.

To create a true international celebration, learners share dishes from their home countries and Bristol Farms provides a beautiful centerpiece of fruit and cheese.

The celebration culminates in the presentation of the Rochelle Hoffman Memorial Award.  This award, which is given to an adult learner who exemplifies the mission of the program, is presented each year by Rochelle Hoffman’s daughters, Renee and Risa.
Past Hoffman Awardees are:
2006 Horacio Cortes
2007 Donnie Madril
2008 Ruth Cisneros
2009 Parvin Tabrizi
2010 Claude Bonham
2011 Effy Sanchez
2012 Isabel Sevilla
2013 Marnalee Lopez
2014 Yolanda Lopez

Please join us on September 10, 2015,at 10 a.m. to celebrate International Literacy Day.  It is our way of recognizing the efforts of volunteers and the progress of our adult learners.  By improving literacy skills, we strengthen our community, and what better way is there to applaud these dedicated people than by being a community and supporting their efforts!

The theme of International Literacy Day 2015 is Literacy and Sustainable Societies. Literacy is a key driver for sustainable development. Literacy skills are the prerequisite for the learning of a broader set of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values, required for creating sustainable societies. At the same time, progress in areas of sustainable development, such as health and agriculture, serves as an enabling factor in the promotion of literacy and literate environments.

Newport Beach Library :: Tutor Recommendations: SMART Goals

Tutor Recommendations: SMART Goals

Has your learner ever said, “I need pronunciation, I want to speak better English, My goal is to learn past tense, or I want to learn to spell”? Many of our learners get goals and skills confused. When learners come to their personal interview, literacy staff helps them set SMART Goals. Goals have a specific end result. Skills on the other hand are ongoing improvements.

Progress comes from working towards personal goals. Reading and writing learners, who are also second language learners, say they want to read or write better, learn grammar, or improve vocabulary. These are valuable skills, but very different from goals.

At tutor training, Betty was the example of a reading and writing learner. She dreamed of becoming a nurse and needed the GED or high school diploma. She also wanted to talk to neighbors and read maps and bus schedules.
Goals are specific accomplishments or dreams to strive for. Skills, on the other hand, are ongoing, like a treadmill, never stopping.

If your learner’s goals look like a list of skills, it is time to brainstorm. Start by helping your learner identify things he or she wants to do. Next, help your learner identify the goals he or she can achieve within 3-6 months. Once these goals are identified, talk about the steps needed to accomplish them.  READ MORE !

Newport Beach Library :: Tutor Snapshot

Newport Beach Library
Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy
Literally Speaking: Nov/Dec 2014

Snapshot: Tutor
Shari Elias Last year, Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy recognized Shari Elias for her nearly 7 years of service to the Program, both as a tutor and an instructor. Her dedication to the learners has made her an invaluable member of the team.

Literally Speaking: What first drew you to the Newport Beach Public Library literacy program?

Shari: My father passed away in 2007, and after having been his caregiver for 7 months at his home in CDM, I felt a need to volunteer in a less stressful situation. I never realized how much fun and enjoyable, while also being therapeutic, tutoring in this program would be. It took some time to realize that as I was helping others, the learners were doing me a much greater service.

Literally Speaking: How has your work here impacted your life outside?

Shari: Being involved with individuals from approximately ten different countries every week cannot be anything but exciting. Although I have always thought of myself as open-minded and fairly liberal, it is difficult for me to express my emotions felt when discussing religion, politics, lifestyles, families, marriages, sex, etc., in a group setting with foreigners. I have learned from them to be more compassionate, less prejudiced, and not to jump to conclusions when a particular group is headlined in our news. I also appreciate that I can now recite a greeting in about 8-10 different languages other than English.  READ MORE !

Newport Beach Library - CUCINA enoteca celebrates Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy during September

Orange County Celebrates
during September

During September at CUCINA enoteca Irvine and CUCINA enoteca Newport Beach, Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy is our #sipsupport beneficiary. For every glass or bottle of CUCINA private label wine sold during the month of September, we will donate $1 to them!

Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy is a division of the Newport Beach Library. They provide free, one-on-one tutoring, small group classes and additional resources for adults in the community who struggle with the English language. Their hope is that all participants are successful in achieving their literacy goals.

Over 200 adult learners typically enroll each year, and there are many more waiting to be accepted into the program. Unfortunately, there are not enough volunteer tutors to handle the learner requests. The program could not work without dedicated volunteer tutors.

The programs that ProLiteracy offers to Adult Learners are:
Book Club – a discussion group for adult learners about book selections in classic or modern fiction.
Conversation – helping participants understand and communicate comfortably in every-day idiomatic English.
Discussion Group – A weekly gathering of learners who are encouraged to participate in speaking on any number of topics that are presented during the session.
Learner Network – A quarterly meeting for adult Learners to learn more about the program, and each other in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Often, guest speakers share their knowledge on items of interest to the adult learners.
Life Skills – A weekly class that focuses on tools to help with everyday needs such as setting life goals, financial literacy, navigating social media, etc.
Movie Talk – Once a month a movie selection is screened for assembled learners. Each film normally deals with different issues that we face in the United States and afterward the group participates in an open discussion about the different topics addressed in the movie.
Pronunciation Workshop – work with a professional speech therapist in a small group setting on American English pronunciation. Each workshop is typically eight weeks.
Writing Workshop – Geared to working with the adult learner on creative writing. Each workshop is typically six weeks.

International Literacy Day is an annual celebration of literacy held each year. This year’s event is on September 11.

Check out these statistics:
•In the U.S. there are over 30,000,000 people who are at the lowest level of literacy.
•In California – about 8,400,000 people fit in this category
•In Orange County – approximately 450,000 people cannot read well enough to fill out a bank deposit slip.
•75% of unemployed adults have difficulty reading at a basic level
•Almost 70% of prison inmates perform at the lowest level of literacy
•24% of patients with low literacy skills cannot understand their prescription labels
•Illiteracy in the U.S. costs Billions in lost productivity and health and safety issues.
