Natasha began her library career as a Children’s Librarian in North Carolina.  After relocating to New Hampshire, she served as Director of two libraries in her ten years there.  Later moving to New Mexico with her husband, Natasha served as Assistant Director of Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Libraries.  She led library programming and outreach, materials support services, information technology, and mobile library services.  Now settled as City Librarian in Roseville, Natasha’s areas of focus are strengthening organizational culture, building community partnerships, fostering innovation, and continuing to provide community-driven programs and services. As City Librarian, she also oversees operations of the Maidu Museum & Historic Site and works on major initiatives in the City’s Parks, Recreation & Libraries department.

For Trish Noa, OCPL Central Regional Manager, libraries and literacy are inseparable!  She demonstrates her passion for literacy by consistently encouraging OCPL staff to promote and support adult and family literacy.  As Branch Manager at Irvine Heritage Park Library, she often offered her own office for tutor/learner pairs to meet, trained as a READ/OC tutor, and led a small group of READ/OC learners.

Trish continues to work closely with the READ/OC team as liaison between the literacy program and libraries.  She attends READ/OC meetings and partners with the READ/OC team to offer special workshops and programs at branches, such as the USCIS resources and workshops.  She is always on the lookout for ways to support adult and family literacy efforts in libraries and in the community.  She offers valuable advice, suggests untapped resources, and provides constructive insights.  While at Irvine Heritage Park Regional Library, she brought the community into the library and took the library out into the community.  When Trish learned of learners’ long wait for tutors, she worked with READ/OC to make literacy a priority at her branch.  She became a READ/OC tutor and continues to address specific community needs, such as encouraging branches to create literacy displays to recruit more tutors in response to a growing waiting list of adult learners.

READ/OC congratulates Trish as CLA’s Outstanding Librarian in Support of Literacy, and very much appreciates the fantastic commitment to literacy and outstanding support of READ/OC by each and every OCPL team member!

Christy Aguirre Movers & Shakers 2013 — Community Builders - Literacy Legacy

Thanks to branch supervisor Christy Aguirre, the Southgate Branch of the Sacramento Public Library (SPL), located in a poor neighborhood known for gang-related violence, has become a literacy-promoting safe space.

Almost immediately after joining Southgate in spring 2012, Aguirre, who has been with the Sacramento Public Library since 2008 (and before that spent seven years in the public libraries of San José), initiated partnerships with dozens of local businesses, city organizers, and public and private agencies to offer grant-funded programming and workshops to increase literacy across all ages and abilities.

She brought Desert Storm veterans from the Sacramento Veterans Resource and Rehab Center into SPL’s Adult Literacy Program and combined forces with the Southgate Recreation and Park District to support neighborhood Summer Reading Camps. She reached out to Head Start parents and caregivers, pregnant and parenting teens at the nearby alternative high school, struggling families in housing developments, the AIDS Housing Alliance, the Al-Arqam Islamic School, a shelter for women and children, and more.

The keystone of this literacy push is the summer reading program. To promote it, the library set up tables at events and locations all over Sacramento, including the Filipino Fiesta, San Francisco Junior Giants Baseball Summer Camp, National Night Out, Sacramento Zoo, and more. Library staff visited schools, made presentations at parent/teacher meetings and before the media, and distributed flyers.  READ MORE !

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. - Earlier this month, at the California Library Association (CLA) Annual Conference in Pasadena, Santa Clara County Library District Literacy Manager Patricia Lorenzo was presented with the CLA 2011 Outstanding Librarian in Support of Literacy Award.

“This honor reflects Patricia and The Reading Program’s commitment to our patrons,” said Melinda Cervantes, Santa Clara County Library District Executive Director and County Librarian. “We are grateful the good work of our Library is recognized statewide.”

For the past year and a half, Lorenzo has managed The Reading Program, the Santa Clara County Library District’s literacy program that has helped adults learn to improve their reading and writing skills since 1985.

“Reading is such a rewarding activity because books can be faithful companions and teachers,” said County of Santa Clara Supervisor Liz Kniss, Delegate of the Santa Clara County Library District Joint Powers Authority. “We celebrate this recognition and the effort it represents - developing basic skills that overcome barriers and open new doors.”

The CLA 2011 Outstanding Librarian in Support of Literacy Award credited Lorenzo’s leadership, positive can-do attitude, and unwavering sense of purpose to ensure the success of the literacy program.

“We could not be more proud of Patricia’s contributions to The Reading Program and its services for members of our community,” added Derek Wolfgram, Deputy County Librarian for Santa Clara County Library District and President-Elect of the California Library Association. “Patricia has guided the program through a transition that included hiring all new staff, relocating program offices, creating new promotional materials, and developing partnerships with other community agencies.”

“Thanks to the Library’s literacy program each year hundreds of tutor-learner pairs averaging 250 instructional hours per month successfully helps residents learn to read,” said County of Santa Clara Supervisor Mike Wassermann, Delegate of the Santa Clara County Library District Joint Powers Authority. “We commend Patricia and The Reading Program staff and volunteers for making a significant difference in the lives of many of our residents.”

“I thank all the members of our adult literacy staff for their diligence and commitment, and our dedicated volunteer tutors for their many hours of service,” said Patricia Lorenzo in response to the award. “It has been a pleasure and a true professional privilege to work with all of these talented and enthusiastic individuals! It is incredibly satisfying to be involved in a program with such amazing transformative power to create significant positive changes in the lives of those who participate and persevere.”

Anne Cain understands the strong correlation between reading skills and everyday success. As such, under her leadership the Project Second Chance (PSC) has become an integral part of the Contra Costa County Library's strategic plan to support reading and literacy. Anne keenly understands that the cause of literacy needs to be a consistent presence in the community, and she has fought successfully to make all PSC staff county positions rather than temporary contract staff. Further, in an era of terrible cut-backs, she has never hinted that cut-backs might be required in literacy. Anne values PSC and uses our program as a model for service delivery throughout the library.

But perhaps even more important than all this is that Anne "gets it." She understands the importance of volunteers. She talks to students like the real people they are and listens to them, is touched by their courage, and celebrates their successes. One PSC student, Kristi C., stated"Anne Cain has been a huge supporter of PSC. She believes everyone should have the opportunity to learn how to read, and she knows that reading can change your life. I know from personal experience that Anne Cain is a literacy hero."

Anne has always said that knowing PSC students has made her a better person. Well, Anne has made PSC a better program. Retiring in November, 2010, Anne's and her fan club - all of the staff, tutors, and students of PSC - want her to know that her legacy of support for literacy will live on. And we hope that she will receive this well-deserved recognition as she truly is an "Outstanding Librarian in Support of Literacy."

Since its inception in 2003, the Literacy Interest Group (formerly Literacy Services Section) has sponsored an annual award for Outstanding Librarian In Support of Literacy (OLSL) presented annually.

This year the Committee is starting up again in preparation to seek nominations, conduct the judging, and make the difficult choice of which librarian will receive this year’s honor. Cherall Weiss of Newport Beach P.L. is heading up the Committee which currently consists of Rosie Manela of Rancho Cucamonga P.L., Delores Allmond of Beverly Hills P.L. and Carey Gross of Butte County Library.

The Committee needs SCLLN members to serve with them on this very uplifting endeavor. The time commitment is minimal, and should fit in to the tough schedules that most of us are now working. Derek Wolfgram was recognized as this year’s winner of the Outstanding Librarian in Support of Literacy.

The following comments are excerpts from his nomination:

Derek Wolfgram goes WAY above and beyond to support literacy! While not familiar with Literacy Services in the Library before becoming our Director (Butte County), he got up to speed quickly and became one of our best-ever advocates! From voting on t-shirt graphics, to starring in a zany radio spot, to respectfully presenting our Champion of Literacy award to our adult learner honoree, no doubt about it, in so many ways he was ‘there’ for us.

While always an enthusiastic spirit in support of Literacy, Derek’s support isn’t just all fun and games – rather it is also forward- thinking, inclusive and strategic. He was sure to include the Literacy Services team when doing his system needs assessment and when he instituted the Leadership Team of managers, the Literacy Specialist was solidly at the table. Extremely supportive of our efforts to secure grants, he’s proven to be a key team member, offering his valuable visionary and editing skills.

Perhaps most illustrative overall is recalling last January when Derek accompanied two adult learners and a volunteer tutor to visit one of our legislators. Derek stepped back and encouraged the focus be directed on the learners. Surely the necessary messages about concerns for the library were heard that day, but with Derek’s compassionate and elegant presence, what the legislator will remember when thinking of the Library are the voices from two adults who have so benefited from Literacy Services.

The California Library Association recently recognized an Alameda County library director with an exceptional librarian award.

Jean Hofacket was honored with the Outstanding Librarian in Support of Literacy Award at the association's annual awards dinner on Nov. 14.

The association honored Hofacket because she has shown commitment to underserved populations throughout her career. She directed a five-year strategic plan and funding for literacy efforts throughout the library system and in places such as Santa Rita Jail in Dublin and the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center in San Leandro.

The president of the Board of Supervisors Scott Haggerty said in a prepared statement, "Jean has made literacy a priority since becoming County librarian and she deserves the recognition.''

Nevada County Library coordinator to head California literacy efforts
Union: Nov 15, 2008

Alan Archer, Nevada County Library’s coordinator of adult literacy services, has been named president of the Literacy Section of the California Library Association.

Archer, of Grass Valley, will lead the group that represents literacy programs in more than 100 library jurisdictions across California. The group’s objective is to help improve the skills of an estimated three million adults in the state who read, write or figure numbers below functional levels.

Archer has directed Nevada County Library’s Literacy Program since 2005. The program, now called Read Up!, targets a projected 10,000 county residents who are deficient in one or more of the three Rs, county Librarian Mary Ann Trygg said.

“Alan’s appointment at the state level is a well deserved recognition for spearheading our local program, which now serves nearly three times as many students as it did when he joined us four years ago,” Trygg said.

Archer directs the county library’s Read Up! Program with the help of volunteer tutors, who offer one-on-one tutoring.

The program teaches mathematics and the reading and writing of English throughout Nevada County. English as a second language (ESL) is provided to foreign-born residents of Truckee, as well.
