SCLLN Literacy Pre-Conference @ 2015 California Library Association : : Nov 5

SCLLN Literacy Pre-Conference @ CLA
Pasadena Convention Center

Join us on November 5th
1:15 PM – 4:15 PM
Early Bird Registration ends September 16th
Pasadena Convention Center

Join SCLLN @ 2015 CLA Conference for 2 great workshops to help strengthen literacy services at your library.

Successful learning environments for adult learners
Learning is ongoing–an everyday process. In addition to one-to-one volunteer tutoring, some library literacy programs hold small group sessions, larger classes and online tutoring. How do you determine the “best” approach for each learner? How will you know when it’s time to move to another group or try another type of learning situation? And, how do you graduate someone from your program? A panel of literacy program experts, facilitated by Diane Moseley, Literacy Coordinator at the Huntington Beach Public Library, will lead an in-depth discussion.

Exploring GED vs HiSET and other High School Equivalency Options
Which Program is Right for your Learners?
There is currently a lot of confusion about the HiSET exam, the GED, TASC and Online Career High School. It would be natural to think that since these options have the same outcome—receiving a high school equivalency credential—that the content of each would be relatively similar or equivalent. But is that true? Are they all accepted equally by colleges? By employers? Cherall Weiss, Literacy Coordinator for the Newport Beach Public Library, will lead a panel discussion to explore the differences in the options and how to decide which one is right for your learners.

Non-member: $60

Member: $45

Student member: $30

Registration for the CLA conference is separate and not necessary to attend this Pre-Conference event.  You are, however, encouraged to stay for the Conference itself.

Early Bird Registration ends September 16th

Lunch At The Library : : Summer Meals Program

Lunch at the Library

Lunch at the Library Sites
Lunch at the Library is keeping kids healthy and engaged during the summer months to ensure all kids return to school in the fall ready to learn.

For many children and teens, the stability, nutrition, and education provided by the lunches they receive in the school cafeteria, and the learning opportunities they receive in the classroom, ends when school lets out for summer vacation.

Summer meal programs in public libraries help combat childhood hunger, obesity, and learning loss during the summer months by providing youth with:
•regularly-scheduled, free & healthy meals through USDA Summer Food Service Program
•learning and enrichment programs
•introductions to library services and resources
•teen volunteer opportunities

Through the Lunch at the Library program, the California Library Association and California Summer Meal Coalition provide libraries with the resources and support they need to establish themselves as quality summer meal program sites for their communities.

7 Reasons Job Seekers Should Volunteer
USNews.com: 8.05.2014 by Arnie Fertig

When it comes to searching for a new job, almost everyone thinks about building a résumé and LinkedIn profile, networking in person and online and responding to advertised positions. Of course, these are all critical elements of your job hunt.

There is another, less obvious thing you should be doing: volunteering for an organization, group or cause in which you believe. Here’s why:
1. Volunteering can multiply your networking opportunities
2. Volunteering provides opportunities for you to use your skills and gain new ones.
3. Volunteering can help build your résumé.
4. Volunteering can defeat your sense of isolation. READ MORE !

Southern California Library Literacy Network - SCLLN
Writer to Writer Challenge - 2013

The Southern California Library Literacy Network is excited to announce the winners and runners-up for the 2013 Writer to Writer Challenge! We received a large response—45 entries—and the quality of the letters was amazing! We are so proud of all of the learners who wrote letters. We are grateful to the coordinators and learner judging panels at Huntington Beach Public Library, National City Public Library, Newport Beach Central Public Library, and Carlsbad City Library for donating their time to judge the letters.

Please join us at the Southern California Library Literacy Network Literacy Conference at the Holiday Inn, Buena Park, on Saturday, March 8, where the winners will be recognized during the lunch program. The winners and runners-up will each receive a cash prize and a certificate, and may attend the conference at our expense but they must pre-register.  All letter writers will receive a certificate of participation.

Congratulations to everyone who entered the 2013 Writer to Writer Challenge!

Violence, Crime and Literacy: What’s the Connection?  Did you know that —
60% of America’s inmates read below a fourth-grade reading level
   (U.S. Department of Education)
70% is the recidivism rate for inmates who do not receive literacy help in prison — but if inmates do receive literacy help while incarcerated, their rate of returning to prison drops to 16%
   (Penal Institution Records)
85% of all juvenile offenders have reading problems
   (U.S. Department of Education)
2/3 of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare
    (One World Literacy Foundation)

congratulates 129 newly literate adults at their 7th Annual Manos Amigas/Helping Hands Celebration.

Zickefoose was functionally illiterate, unable to read a prescription label, his children's report cards or a menu. He was diagnosed as a young boy with dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and didn't learn to read and write until he was 35.
That's when everything changed. He became a poster boy for the Corona library's adult reading program, began to speak publicly about his own struggles and was named the library's literacy director. He founded a nonprofit youth organization.
And on Dec. 7, Zickefoose, 52, was sworn in as a member of the Corona-Norco Unified School District Board of Education.

Let’s Read, Altadena! was chosen to participate in a pilot project called Fam-Track which developed into the wonderful literacy program Families For Literacy (FFL). The FFL program worked with the entire family to enhance reading, writing and comprehension skills.

Health Literacy Learning is a program of the Azusa City Library, in collaboration with the Azusa Neighborhood Wellness Center and the Azusa Pacific University Department of TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages). Based on the belief that literacy is not an end in itself, but rather a catalyst to transform lives.
• In one California study, 65% of participants with low reading skills reported they avoid going to the doctor because of difficulties with paperwork; 75% of medical professionals said they were aware of medical errors that were the product of low literacy.

My First Election Day
BY LEARNER LETICIA BUENROSTRO
I was busy all morning trying to finish everything by 3:30 pm to be ready to vote. When I arrived to the polling place I was nervous because it was my first time. The line was very long but when I turned around I was relieved to see a friend, so I went back to stay near her. I asked her, “What do I have to do to vote?”

Newport Beach - Literally Speaking
