Intonation and Speed -- The Road to Better Comprehension
Do your learners read word for word? Do they disregard punctuation? Do they struggle through (but finish) a sentence and wonder what they read?

Glendora Library :: Help Mary Pat Dodson Continue Her Fight

Help Mary Pat Dodson continue her fight
Glendora, CA

Mary Pat has been a Literacy Coordinator for the community for over 12 years. She is a single parent with a 17 year old daughter. This last year Mary Pat was diagnosed with Autoimmune Hepatitis (persistent liver inflammation). Mary Pat was soon after diagnosed with Non Alcoholic Cirrhosis of the Liver, and is now in Liver Failure. She is currently on a waiting list for a liver transplant.

Mary Pat is physically unable to work the hours required for her job, and is currently on temporary un-paid leave, with no foreseeable income. Being that Mary Pat is a part-time employee she does not qualify for disability. Mary Pat is at the end of her financial rope right now and needs our help to get through the next 6 months. We are hosting this online fundraiser to try and raise $25,000.00 to help cover her living/medical expenses. Mary Pat has helped so many and given so much to our community we feel it's our privilege to help her in her time of need. Please take a moment and donate whatever you can, no amount is too small. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Imperial County Library - Librarian, Barrington, Set to Retire

County Librarian set to retire after 15 years
Imperial Valley Press: 2.11.2016 by Edwin Delgado

After serving Imperial Valley for more than 20 years, the last 15 as the County Librarian, Connie Barrington is now set to retire. The new county librarian will begin on March 4.

“It was hard to make the decision, I really enjoyed it,” Barrington said. “It’s time for someone young with a new vision to continue to expand on what we have.”

Barrington who is from Chicago came into the valley with her husband in the 1980s after he convinced her to come and experience living in the Valley.

She held several positions early in her career, before getting appointed as the county librarian Barrington was an assistant to the director of the Brawley Library where she began to get involved with the Adult Literacy Program in 1989.

“I think that with the budget that we’ve had, we were able to provide great services for the community,” Barrington said. “The library is the best underutilized resource in the Valley.”

Despite always having a limited budget to work with she feels proud to have been able to expand the services they provide the community and adapt with the times. The library is working to allow people to check out eBook readers and have constantly upgraded their software and connections to allow its users to access the resources and information they need with ease.

“People only think of books when it comes to the library but we’re so much more than that,” Barrington said.

Now with retirement looming, she said that a friend of hers adviser her not to commit to anything for the first six months of her retirement. She does intend to do a lot of traveling but also wants to remain involved with the literacy program, although she still doesn’t know to what capacity.  READ MORE @ [Subscription Required]

Celebrate National Banned Books Week by reading a book that has been banned or challenged by libraries or school districts. Books will be on display in the library and a list will be available online.

San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Boulevard, San Diego, 92101
Friday, October 2, 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. PDT
To help raise awareness regarding the censorship of books, the San Diego Public Library, in partnership with the San Diego Costume Guild, presents the 4th annual All-Day Read-Aloud Read-a-thon on Friday, October 2, 2015 from 12 to 5 p.m. in the Garden Courtyard at the San Diego Central Library at the Joan Λ Irwin Jacobs Common, located at 330 Park Blvd in downtown San Diego.
The public is invited to read alongside librarians, volunteer and teen readers, and special guests from the Costume Guild, who will appear as costumed characters from many favorite books including Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland.

“It’s important to realize that not every book will be right for every reader,” says library director Misty Jones. “The freedom to choose for ourselves what we want to read is a hard-won right that we must not take for granted. Reading, speaking, thinking and expressing ourselves freely are core American values.”
