Two Upland community heroes chosen for L.A. County Fair

The city has nominated two "Community Heroes" for this year's L.A. County Fair.

Karissa Burgos, junior hero, and Kathy Pruitt, adult hero, will be honored at 5:30 p.m. during Upland Day during the fair at Fairplex, 1101 West McKinley Ave. Pomona, on Sept. 9.

Every year the L.A. County Fair honors community heroes from 18 surrounding cities during the 23-day-long event.

Upland Day will celebrate volunteers, humanitarians, students, neighbors and community organizations working to make their city a better place to live. There will be a parade down Broadway featuring civic organizations and school bands. Cost is $5 before 5 p.m.

Adult Hero, Pruitt, volunteers with the Upland Public Library, the Upland Public Library Adult Literacy Program and the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Pruitt was described as a "wonderful pillar" of support for the Adult Literacy Program.

She began as a tutor in 1994 and has since tutored 19 students, helping them to meet their literacy goals and logging in more than 2, 500 hours of time in the process.

Pruitt started the Reading Club for adult learners and has raised money for the literacy program - for the last seven years she has participated on the Tutor Titans trivia team at the annual Literacy Trivia Bee and Silent Auction fundraiser.

Pruitt has worked tirelessly as a spokeswoman for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. She has served as a liaison between Coiner Nursery and the National Breast Cancer Foundation. READ MORE !

Upland Public Library - Adult Literacy Program

is a site of the West End Literacy League, a joint program between the Rancho Cucamonga and Upland Public Libraries. Since its inception in 1989, the Adult Literacy program has helped over 1,000 English-speaking adults improve their basic reading and writing skills, and the program can help you or someone you know. Adult learners are matched with trained volunteers for free one-to-one tutoring. Instruction is based on the learner's needs and goals.

Adult Literacy Reading Club

Adult learners discuss books and meet other aspiring readers in their own book club, which began on October 3, 2006. Each book club member receives a free copy of the book to be discussed. Please check the Library Calendar for specific dates. Grant restrictions limit participation to adult literacy learners and tutors only; please contact the Literacy Office to pre-register, (909) 931-4212.

Ready-Set-Read

As an outreach service, the Upland Literacy Program coordinates the "Books for Babies" project. This is a joint effort to nurture literacy at an early age by providing a Ready-Set-Read kit to new parents who visit the San Antonio Community Hospital's Healthy Beginnings Family Care Center. These bilingual (English/Spanish) kits provide information about the benefits of reading to baby, tips on how to read to baby, a list of appropriate titles, a list of parenting books, information about the four participating libraries, a board book, and a coupon to be redeemed for another board book at any one of the four libraries. The Upland Public Library, in partnership with the Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, and San Bernardino County Libraries, provides the "Read-Set-Read" Kits. Ventura County Library

The Reading Instruction for Adults provides free one-to-one reading and writing tutoring by trained volunteers throughout Ventura County. The Ventura County Library has been offering this service since 1984, when it was one of the original public libraries to join the California Literacy Campaign. Our administrative costs are part of the Ventura County Library's budget. Additional funding comes from ongoing collaborative agreements with Ventura Adult School, Oxnard Adult School, various cities and the Sheriff's Department. State grants and donations from government, business, and service organizations enable us to help about 500 individuals each year.

Tutoring takes place in libraries, school, community, and jail facilities throughout Ventura County. These sites are managed by part-time professional educators, referred to as site managers. They are available during specified times to assess learners reading levels, interview tutors, match students and tutors, recommend teaching materials and provide support for learning partners.

Adult Learner Leadership Institute - ALLI

Adult Learner Leadership Institute Graduation [ ALLI ]

24 Adult Learners from Southern California library literacy programs successfully completed the 2009 Adult Learner Leadership Institute.

11 adult learners graduated on May 30 at the Carlsbad Library Learning Center.

13 will graduate on June 13 at the Upland Public Library.

In addition to improving basic reading and writing skills, many learners are eager to take on new challenges and want to make a contribution of their own:
~ Become better role models for their families
~ Assume leadership roles at work
~ Participate in community activities and decision-making
~ Advocate for resources for adult learners

The 6-month ALLI program was founded in 2000 as the Henry Huffman Leadership Institute in memory of Henry Huffman, a dedicated learner who devoted his life to spreading awareness of literacy in the community. Graduates keep their skills active by facilitating and co-presenting sessions for new learners.

ALLI graduates build self esteem as they increase their potential to speak out effectively on community issues, and act as spokespersons for literacy causes.

Upland Library is hosting the 2008 Adult Learner Leadership Institute (ALLI, formerly known as the Henry Huffman Leadership Institute), on the second Saturday of January through June, at the Carnegie Cultural Center, 123 D St.

ALLI is a six-month leadership development program for advanced learners. ALLI students build self-esteem while acquiring public speaking skills, research techniques, and learning styles. They also learn elements of fundraising, advocacy and special events production. ALLI workshops are facilitated by the previous year’s Institute graduates.
