Hemet Public Library Adult Literacy Program

Through one-on-one and small group tutoring done by volunteers in the community, the program's goals are to promote and maintain the basic literacy skills of English-speaking adults so they may attain personal goals and participate more fully in society as parents and family members, as workers, and as community members and citizens.

Walk-a-Mile for Literacy
Sat, September 26, 9am – 11am
Join us as we "Walk-a-Mile for Literacy" to bring awareness of the need to improve literacy skills and to help eliminate the adult literacy problem in our valley. This is a fundraising event for the Library's Literacy Services. Participants need to register in order to win prizes and receive gifts. More information is available by calling: (951) 765-3856.

Huntington Beach Library Adult Literacy Program

Literacy Volunteers - HBPL, was founded by Linda D. Light in 1984. This group of outstanding people is the volunteer arm of the Huntington Beach Library Adult Literacy Program. The library staff trains volunteers to tutor adults in reading and writing. The staff evaluates students and matches them with trained tutors. Prospective students must speak English. Our students say the program helps them be better parents, improve their work skills, and have better lives.
More than 400 students and tutors currently participate in the program, and tutors are always needed. Literacy Volunteers - HBPL, an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America, is run by a 15-member Board of Directors.

In the Huntington Beach Public Library Literacy Center people from all over the world help each other every day. Our program is funded by the City of Huntington Beach, the California State Library, Community Development Block Grant funds, and corporate and private donations. Glendale Public Library Adult Reading Program

Literacy is a fancy word for the ability to read and write--simple skills most of us learned as youngsters.m But there are many people who never mastered these skills. For someone who struggles to sound out letters and put them into words, the effort can be frustrating as well as embarrassing.

People who don't read well don't look different from anyone else. One out of every four people in the United States struggles to read, but they also raise families, go to work and participate in their communities.

The Glendale Public Library Literacy Department offers a unique approach to learning literacy skills. Our program combines basic instruction with the adult students' goals, making it possible for adults who struggle with reading to learn and use the tools necessary for life, family, job and pride. Almost anyone can learn to read. The enjoyment found in reading becomes the joy found in a journey, taking them anywhere they want to go.

Glendora Public Library

The GLENDORA READS! Literacy program offers free one-to-one tutoring for English speaking adults, age 16 or older, who are not in high school. Anyone who would like to read better or improve their reading and writing skills is welcome - all inquiries are kept confidential.

Downey City Library – Adult Literacy

The Downey City Library is committed to helping people learn how to read better. If you understand English, are over eighteen years old, and need help reading you may contact the Adult Literacy program for an assessment. Then once a week for an hour and a half you will meet with a tutor at the library who will teach you to read. The student may determine the day and time they would like to be tutored.

Escondido Public Library Literacy Program

The Escondido Public Library Literacy Services has been in existence since 1990. One in four adults cannot read and over 500,000 struggle with reading in San Diego County. We assist English speaking learners in achieving their goals based on individual needs.
