Glendale Public Library Adult Reading Program

Literacy is a fancy word for the ability to read and write--simple skills most of us learned as youngsters.m But there are many people who never mastered these skills. For someone who struggles to sound out letters and put them into words, the effort can be frustrating as well as embarrassing.

People who don't read well don't look different from anyone else. One out of every four people in the United States struggles to read, but they also raise families, go to work and participate in their communities.

The Glendale Public Library Literacy Department offers a unique approach to learning literacy skills. Our program combines basic instruction with the adult students' goals, making it possible for adults who struggle with reading to learn and use the tools necessary for life, family, job and pride. Almost anyone can learn to read. The enjoyment found in reading becomes the joy found in a journey, taking them anywhere they want to go.

Glendora Public Library

The GLENDORA READS! Literacy program offers free one-to-one tutoring for English speaking adults, age 16 or older, who are not in high school. Anyone who would like to read better or improve their reading and writing skills is welcome - all inquiries are kept confidential.

Downey City Library – Adult Literacy

The Downey City Library is committed to helping people learn how to read better. If you understand English, are over eighteen years old, and need help reading you may contact the Adult Literacy program for an assessment. Then once a week for an hour and a half you will meet with a tutor at the library who will teach you to read. The student may determine the day and time they would like to be tutored.

Escondido Public Library Literacy Program

The Escondido Public Library Literacy Services has been in existence since 1990. One in four adults cannot read and over 500,000 struggle with reading in San Diego County. We assist English speaking learners in achieving their goals based on individual needs.

Our mission is to assist individuals with reading and writing improvement and to teach adults and families to utilize the public library as a resource for lifelong learning.

The County of Los Angeles Public Library offers free adult and family literacy instruction at Literacy Centers & Community Libraries convenient to tutors and learners. The program became part of the California Literacy Campaign in 1984 through an initiative of the California State Library. Since 1984, the Library has expanded literacy services to meet the needs of adults and families wanting to improve their reading and writing skills. (562) 940-8511

Covina Public Library - Second Start Literacy Program

A library-based literacy service with a mission of assisting English-speaking adults and children who wish to improve basic literacy skills. Trained volunteers and staff strive to create a learning environment that promotes self-esteem and helps adult learners to participate more effectively and productively in society. Lessons are individualized, confidential, and highly-goal oriented. Tutors structure the learning process around the goals of the learner, using materials that relate to those goals. City of Commerce Library - Adult Literacy Program

Offers one-on-one tutoring for adults 16 years or older who want to better their reading and writing skills and for those adults who have learned English as a second language and would like to improve their English language skills. All materials are free and all tutors are trained to help adults raise their reading and writing skills.

Corona Public Library – Literacy Program

English-speaking adults can improve their reading, writing and computing skills through the library’s Literacy Program or call (951) 279-3589 to find out more! Adults are matched one-to-one with trained volunteers and meet regularly at the library during open hours. Through the library’s Families For Literacy program, parents are encouraged to read aloud at home through special storytimes and book giveaways.
