Glendale Public Library Adult Reading Program

Literacy is a fancy word for the ability to read and write--simple skills most of us learned as youngsters.m But there are many people who never mastered these skills. For someone who struggles to sound out letters and put them into words, the effort can be frustrating as well as embarrassing.

People who don't read well don't look different from anyone else. One out of every four people in the United States struggles to read, but they also raise families, go to work and participate in their communities.

The Glendale Public Library Literacy Department offers a unique approach to learning literacy skills. Our program combines basic instruction with the adult students' goals, making it possible for adults who struggle with reading to learn and use the tools necessary for life, family, job and pride. Almost anyone can learn to read. The enjoyment found in reading becomes the joy found in a journey, taking them anywhere they want to go.

The GLENDORA READS! Literacy program offers free one-to-one tutoring for English speaking adults, age 16 or older, who are not in high school. Anyone who would like to read better or improve their reading and writing skills is welcome - all inquiries are kept confidential.

Downey City Library – Adult Literacy

The Downey City Library is committed to helping people learn how to read better. If you understand English, are over eighteen years old, and need help reading you may contact the Adult Literacy program for an assessment. Then once a week for an hour and a half you will meet with a tutor at the library who will teach you to read. The student may determine the day and time they would like to be tutored.

Escondido Public Library Literacy Program

The Escondido Public Library Literacy Services has been in existence since 1990. One in four adults cannot read and over 500,000 struggle with reading in San Diego County. We assist English speaking learners in achieving their goals based on individual needs.

Our mission is to assist individuals with reading and writing improvement and to teach adults and families to utilize the public library as a resource for lifelong learning.

The County of Los Angeles Public Library offers free adult and family literacy instruction at Literacy Centers & Community Libraries convenient to tutors and learners. The program became part of the California Literacy Campaign in 1984 through an initiative of the California State Library. Since 1984, the Library has expanded literacy services to meet the needs of adults and families wanting to improve their reading and writing skills. (562) 940-8511

Covina Public Library - Second Start Literacy Program

A library-based literacy service with a mission of assisting English-speaking adults and children who wish to improve basic literacy skills. Trained volunteers and staff strive to create a learning environment that promotes self-esteem and helps adult learners to participate more effectively and productively in society. Lessons are individualized, confidential, and highly-goal oriented. Tutors structure the learning process around the goals of the learner, using materials that relate to those goals. City of Commerce Library - Adult Literacy Program

Offers one-on-one tutoring for adults 16 years or older who want to better their reading and writing skills and for those adults who have learned English as a second language and would like to improve their English language skills. All materials are free and all tutors are trained to help adults raise their reading and writing skills.

English-speaking adults can improve their reading, writing and computing skills through the library’s Literacy Program or call (951) 279-3589 to find out more! Adults are matched one-to-one with trained volunteers and meet regularly at the library during open hours. Through the library’s Families For Literacy program, parents are encouraged to read aloud at home through special storytimes and book giveaways.

Literacy Services for adults is a program of the Carlsbad City Library that serves English-speaking adults who want to improve their basic reading and writing skills. Literacy Services has helped hundreds of adults to become more confident and independent.

We provide a friendly, supportive atmosphere. We value every learner's needs and goals. Each learner studies one-to-one with a trained volunteer tutor. All services are confidential and provided without charge.

Partnership with Carlsbad High School
In September 1998, Carlsbad Library's Literacy Services began a cooperative literacy effort with Carlsbad High School. Special education students come daily during regular school hours to the Learning Center. Ninth through twelfth graders are tutored one-to-one in basic reading and writing skills by their special education teacher and aide and by the staff and volunteers of the Literacy Services. Enrollment is done through the high school and students receive high school credit.

Colton Public Library – Advance To Literacy

The Colton Public Library is recruiting community volunteers to assist in the library or to tutor adult students in its literacy program. Volunteer literacy tutors spend three hours a week teaching adults how to read. Tutors complete a day-long workshop before being matched up to an adult learner. Burbank Public Library Literacy Services
Reading Horizons Site of the Month: August 2009

Since 1992, Burbank Public Library has provided free, one-to-one literacy services to members of the surrounding community. In the 17 years since then, more than 1,500 volunteer tutors have assisted over 1,600 adult learners in their quests to learn to read. They also have a 'Ready To Read' youth program for 4th-12th graders reading below grade level. Their efforts have been greatly aided by Discover Intensive Phonics (DIP), adopted in 1998 as the library's core reading program. They use a combination of direct instruction along with the software on a network of 5 computer stations to facilitate their students' needs.

"Discover Intensive Phonics works because it is a systematic method of teaching basic concepts and adding layers of skills at each learner’s pace,” says William Byrne-Literacy Coordinator, who is also a certified DIP instructor. “Our learners often tell me that, at long last, they finally have a tutor who can explain the differences between a, at, ate, and eat. It really does give learners independence and confidence to read on their own."

Adult Literacy Services
These services are offered to adults, 16 years or older who are not enrolled in school, who would like to improve their English reading skills. One-on-one tutoring is available upon enrollment in the program. Americorps members provide volunteer tutoring assistance to learners through the California Library Literacy Services program.

Families for Literacy

The second Thursday of each month (September thru June), the FFL families get together to spend time with their children. The main purpose of the program is to encourage early literacy through fun reading activities with their parents. FFL aims to expand language skills- reading, writing, speaking and listening. This program is for parents with children five years old and younger who are enrolled in the Adult Literacy Program. It is funded by LSTA funds administered through the California State Library.

S.T.A.R. Literacy Program

One-on-one tutoring is designed to teach English-speaking adults to read and write or improve existing skills. Volunteer tutors are given a twelve-hour workshop to prepare them to work with the adult learner. Classes for adult learners are one-on-one. They are held twice a week, and each class is one and one-half hours. Classes are free of charge.

Skills Taught: Reading, writing, comprehension. Recruitment: Adult learners are recruited through newspaper ads, flyers, media and word of mouth. A person 16 years of age can be admitted to the program if he or she has left high school.

Learner Orientation: Orientation is given in two-hour sessions, by appointment. The program is explained in detail and the adult learner is tested and placed at his/her individual reading level. Placement: After testing the learner is placed at the appropriate level with a tutor. If a tutor is not immediately available, the adult learner can begin the process in the reading lab with the assistance of the reading lab coordinator.

Time in Program: Since the tutoring is individualized, the time and progress of each student depends on individual goals, commitment and willingness to learn. There is no set time to complete the program.

Tutoring Sites: Tutoring sites are provided at the library and other community social service agencies, churches, synagogues and business associations.

Brawley Public Library LAMBS

The LAMBS (Literacy And Mobile Book Services) unit is a 32’ long vehicle designed by Mathews Specialty Vehicles.

The vehicle has been designed inside to accommodate a wide variety of literacy activities. The hydraulic wheelchair lift has been fitted with a removable puppet stage. There are two laptop computers with software for both parents and children. Internet sites can be cached so that patrons can view them from the unit, even though we don’t have direct Internet access on the unit. There are two color printers. There is ample shelf space to house the materials that will be available for parents and children to checkout and also for books that will be given to the children to keep at the end of each program. There is a TV and VCR for use with literacy presentations and other educational experiences.

The vehicle will be traveling throughout Imperial County giving underserved children ages 0-5 years and their parents access to literacy activities and services provided by others in our collaborative. These include but are not limited to the Health Department, the Burn Institute, Tri-County South Tobacco Education, the Center for Family Solutions, Child Abuse Prevention Council, Imperial County Office of Education, Riverside Office of Education, Imperial County Free Library and branches, Camarena Library, El Centro City Library, Literacy Volunteers of America/Imperial Valley and the Housing Authorities. The unit was made possible through a grant from the State Proposition 10 Commission, California State Library and Imperial County Proposition 10 Commission.
