It required some stealth, but Marie Martinez, 50, of Oak View, learned a few tricks over the years to hide her secret: She couldn’t read.

“I’d sit in the break room and wait for someone to go to the bulletin board. Then I’d ask them to read me what it said. I’d always say I was too busy eating and didn’t have time,” Martinez said. “When the kids wanted me to help them with homework, I’d tell them I was too busy cleaning or cooking.”

Now, her secret is out. But that’s OK, she said, because she’s doing something about it, and she wants others to know there’s no shame in seeking help.

Martinez goes on Wednesday afternoons to the Buena High School library in Ventura, where tutor Valerie Stachkunas, of Ventura, goes over word sounds, using colored tiles as part of a phonics lesson.

Martinez is one of about 200 people being served by READ Ventura County Library, a free adult literacy program offered at six sites throughout the county library system. The program is part of California’s Library Literacy Services, which is in its 30th year both in the state and county. The occasion was marked by Gov. Jerry Brown issuing a proclamation that declared September as Adult Literacy Awareness Month.

Carol Chapman, who runs the Ventura County adult literacy program, said most people who use the one-on-one tutoring services are “people born and educated in the United States who are dealing with all kinds of factors — emotional issues, illness, trauma.”

“The average person who comes to this program reads at a third- or fourth-grade level. They can read, but not well enough to improve their employment status,” she said.

The people in the program tend to be very intelligent, but with some type of issue that makes reading difficult, Chapman said. READ MORE !

Natasha Casteel, City Librarian – Roseville Library

Natasha began her library career as a Children’s Librarian in North Carolina.  After relocating to New Hampshire, she served as Director of two libraries in her ten years there.  Later moving to New Mexico with her husband, Natasha served as Assistant Director of Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Libraries.  She led library programming and outreach, materials support services, information technology, and mobile library services.  Now settled as City Librarian in Roseville, Natasha’s areas of focus are strengthening organizational culture, building community partnerships, fostering innovation, and continuing to provide community-driven programs and services. As City Librarian, she also oversees operations of the Maidu Museum & Historic Site and works on major initiatives in the City’s Parks, Recreation & Libraries department.

Redlands’ Smiley Library’s Adult Literacy program welcomes new face

A part-time literacy coordinator has been hired to help expand the A.K. Smiley Public Library’s Literacy Program.

Dottie Podolak, an educator who has worked for the Redlands Unified School District, will join Katherine Gifford and Trudy Waldron, volunteer literacy coordinators, to create new opportunities for students.

“I’m very excited to be coming in to a wonderful program and to be a part of the Smiley Library,” Podolak said by phone Thursday. “The hope for us as we look ahead is to continue to really deepen the program that has already been established.”

According to the library, 15 to 20 percent of adults in the country are in need of literacy assistance; the program’s goal is to assist adults 18 and older to improve their reading and writing skills.

The program has assisted more than 220 adults in the past four years.

“There is definitely a need for this program and the program has been really held up by these two wonderful volunteers, Trudy and Katherine, who have dedicated themselves to this cause. To come in and work with them is a privilege,” Podolak said.  READ MORE !
