Corona Library Readers=Leaders :: Adult Literacy Giving Day

September 18

Readers = Leaders: Adult Literacy Giving Day is one week from today! Imagine the fear of not being able to Get a Job, Read Medical Labels, Vote, or Help Children with Homework.

Support The Corona Public Library Foundation and help English-speaking adults who need to improve their lives through better reading & writing skills.

Please share and spread the word!
Watch throughout the week for facts about adult literacy right here in Corona and Western Riverside County.

Join in giving to Corona Public Library Foundation's campaign Help New Adult Readers Become New Leaders!

Imagine not being able to read street signs: That generally means no driver's license. Or what about being in an accident and coming out of a coma to find you can no longer read. These are just two examples of real situations facing adult learners in the Corona Public Library's Adult Reading Assistance Program.

Every day, staff & volunteers work with adults trying to improve their lives while facing the huge hurdle of limited reading and writing abilities. Your contribution will help provide new resources for the learners and their tutors, including workshops, tutor training, computer software for literacy and much more.

With your help, we can change someone's life: "Eloise" took the written driving test, only missed passing by one and will be taking it again very soon, while "Dennis" is now reading at a sixth grade level and negotiating with two companies for the best job offer. Don't hesitate: Please give now!

National Voter Registration Day
September 22
Register To Vote At Your Library

National Voter Registration Day is a huge national effort to get as many people to register to vote as possible. The goal is not to advocate on behalf of a candidate or party, but to make sure that people have access to voting.

Have you've moved since the last election? Have you've recently turned 18? Not sure if you are registered to vote? Drop by any time between 1:00 to 4:30 pm, and volunteers from the League of Women Voters will help you register to vote on the spot, verify your voter registration status, or help answer your questions.

Glendora Library :: Parent and Teacher Phonics Workshop | Sep 26

Parent and Teacher Phonics Workshop
Glendora Public Library -- Bidwell Forum
September 26
9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Have you or your child ever read a word and thought, "Well, English is just crazy, that is a word that just has to be memorized?” If you have, we have good news for you: English is not crazy and there is a way to investigate words along with your child or students (dyslexic and non-dyslexic) to learn the true underlying structure, and never utter those words again!

You are invited to attend a Community Literacy Program on Structure Word Inquiry featuring Dr. Kelli Sandman-Hurley and Tracy Block-Zaretsky.  Dr. Sandman-Hurley is a published author and researcher of dyslexia and received her doctorate in Literacy with a specialization in reading and dyslexia from San Diego State University and the University of San Diego. Ms. Block-Zaretsky is a trained Special Education Advocate assisting parents and children through the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and 504Plan process and has tutored children and adults with learning disabilities for the past 18 years. Together, they formed the Dyslexia Training Institute in San Diego.

Presented jointly by the GlendoraAzusa, Covina and Monrovia Public Library Literacy programs, as well as Glendora Public Library Friends Foundation, this program is offered free to all community members, including teachers, parents, students and anyone interested in adult and family literacy.

•Learn to find the sense in English and “sight words”.
•Become a word detective by conducting word hypothesis and creating word sums.
•Learn about the interrelationship between morphology, etymology and phonology.

The Glendora Public Library is located at 140 S. Glendora Ave., Glendora CA 91741. To register for this program, please call the Library at 626-852-4891.
