2017 Writer To Writer Challenge !

SCLLN is excited to announce the winners and runners-up for the 2017 Writer to Writer Challenge !

We had a great response—86 entries—and the quality of the letters was amazing!  We are so proud of all of the learners who wrote letters.  Each letter was a beautiful expression of the learner’s thoughts and feelings.  The ones selected as winners and runners-up most closely met the contest criteria, but as one coordinator said, every letter had its own “pizzazz.”

to be held at the Buena Park Holiday Inn on Saturday, April 14th.

We hope you will join us for the Writer to Writer lunch, if not for the entire conference, and listen as the winner from each category reads their amazing letter!

The winners and runners-up will each receive a cash prize and a certificate, and all letter writers will receive a certificate of participation.  We encourage all coordinators to invite and sponsor all of your writers and their tutors for this special event.  The registration fees are only $15 for learners and $35 for tutors/staff (early bird, SCLLN member) and are an appropriate use of CLLS grant funding.  Inviting your Writer to Writer participants would be an excellent way to recognize our writers and their tutors.  Congratulations to all of our letter writers!

Tammy Marquez, 52, of Oxnard, a single mother of four, has seemed to have a bit of good luck most of her life, at least when it came to working without a high school diploma. Though she dropped out of high school her junior year at Chatsworth High School after getting pregnant, she was able to manage pretty well the next 30-plus years of her life. It wasn’t until her position doing wine club sales, where she worked for six years, was no longer available and she didn’t get one particular job because she lacked a high school diploma, that she decided it was time to tie up that loose end. She did so by enrolling in Ventura County Library’s Career Online High School.

“I signed up to get a GED but it was difficult to get to class,” Marquez said. “I heard about this online and jumped on it.”

Marquez, along with five others from around the county in caps and gowns, accepted her high school diploma in the Topping Room of the E.P. Foster Library on Tuesday, March 20, the first graduates of the program. The online high school, offered by Ventura County Library’s READ Adult Literacy Program in partnership with Gale, a Cengage Learning company, has been around for about two years and the program takes about 18 months to complete. Marquez plans to pursue an associate’s degree and work toward providing child care for people with special needs, drawing from personal experience of caring for her 20-year-old son who has Down’s syndrome.

For 15 years, Carol Chapman has been the coordinator of the READ Adult Literacy Program/ Community Engagement. When the California State Library offered an initiative to implement the online high school program, whereby the county library was able to buy and receive matching scholarships for students wanting to enroll, Chapman jumped on it. The library accumulated 35 scholarships, valued at $1,100 each; and currently there 29 students enrolled, six of whom just gradated.  READ MORE >>

Many adults in the Redlands Adult Literacy Program ask for help with their writing as well as with their reading. They have found that writing is essential in communicating with their children’s teachers or applying for a job.

When adults lack writing skills, they face many obstacles. For example, some adult learners have reported that they have difficulty when filling out job applications or medical forms because of their limited writing skills.

The Friends of A.K. Smiley Public Library recently received a grant of $5,000 from Edison International that the Redlands Adult Literacy Program will use to further enhance writing strategies used by tutors and learners. The grant will fund two writing workshops for tutors and adult learners, support the publication of an anthology of works by adult learners and their tutors and provide vital technology services to adult learners in the community.

The writing workshops have been developed in response to tutors observing that the learners demonstrated improved reading comprehension, but they struggled to reach their writing goals. Learners require writing strategies that are engaging, relevant and respectful to help overcome anxieties or learning disabilities. Many tutors had requested additional training in how to model, teach and guide adult learners of varying abilities and backgrounds through the writing process.

For this reason, Redlands Adult Literacy Program dubbed 2018 “The Year of the Writer” and is focusing its efforts to develop new strategies and tools to promote better writing for adult learners.  READ MORE >>
