Monrovia Library :: Retired Teachers To Learn Of Literacy Program

Retired Teachers To Learn Of Literacy Program At Monrovia Public Library
Monrovia Weekly: 3.23.2018

Retired teachers never stop caring about education and about students, whether the students are in a school classroom or elsewhere in the community. A good example of community outreach is the Literacy Program at the Monrovia Public Library, a goal-oriented program designed to meet the adult learner’s individual needs. Along with individualized instruction, some classroom activities include core workbooks, reading classroom newspapers, and conversation groups. The California Retired Teachers Association #71 (CalRTA) will learn more about the Literacy Program when Coordinator Victor Castellanos is guest speaker at their luncheon meeting on Friday, April 13 at 11:30 a.m.

On the program, Joe Callahan from the Literacy Program will add a tutor’s perspective to Coordinator Victor Castellanos’ comments.

Corona Library :: Adult Literacy Program

Corona Public Library Adult Literacy Program
Mar 30 2018

The Corona Public Library is proud to bring awareness to the global literacy needs, including those in our own community, and we are committed to providing resources to help make a positive change.

THE SHOCKING FACTS

According to ProLiteracy, every important social issue is impacted by low literacy.
• Children of parents with low literacy skills have a 72 percent chance of being at the lowest reading levels themselves.
• Of adults with the lowest literacy levels, 43 percent live in poverty, and 70% of adult welfare recipients have low literacy levels.
• Every year, one in six young adults—more than 1.2 million—drop out of high school.

The library’s Adult Reading Assistance Program provides free tutoring for English-speaking adults in basic reading and writing skills. Students are matched one-to-one with volunteer. Do you know someone who can take advantage of this resource? Encourage them to sign up! Are you passionate about making a difference? Volunteer to teach!

Camarena Library :: 5 Tips to Become a Better Speller

5 Tips to Become a Better Speller
Literacy Place: March 2018

1. Read:
It is almost impossible to become a good speller if you do not read. The two go hand in hand. The more you read, the more vocabulary you build and the more you will know how to spell different words.

2. Exposure:
Make sure to expose yourself to different types of texts. These include but are not limited to: newspapers, novels, blogs, magazines, books, etc. This way, your brain recognizes spelling patterns and is able to pick up on them more quickly.

3. Root Words:
Becoming familiar with root words is helpful since we tend to get confused with prefixes and suffixes, which makes spelling harder. Recognizing the roots of words will make spelling much easier.

4. Writing:
Writing frequently helps you spell more accurately. Usually, the more you write, the more you will be able to recognize which words “look right” and it will come naturally to you next time you spell that word. Having a dictionary at hand also helps to make sure it is correct.

5. Spelling Rules: Familiarize yourself with common rules:
• “i before e except after c”
• “The letter y preceded by a consonant changes to i before a suffix”
• “Most words drop the final silent e before a suffix beginning with a vowel”
• “When adding a suffix to a word that ends with a single consonant after a single vowel and stressing the last syllable in the pronunciation of the word, the final consonant is doubled.”
