Catching Words

An Original Play About Adult Literacy In Orange County

A Citizen Artist Project:  Part of the MFA Directing degree program at UCI A theatrical collaboration with the Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy program at the Newport Public Library

"Catching Words" is a short play about the topic of adult literacy in Orange County.

What is literacy? Who is considered literate or illiterate? What does it feel to be unable to communicate and how do we relate to a public space when we are unable to communicate?

After the performance, there will be a short talkback with the creative team and experts in the field of literacy. The Newport Beach Public Library Holiday Celebration

Placentia Library ◯ Meet Our Learners And Tutors

Meet Our Learners And Tutors
Placentia Library Explore: Sep 2019-Feb 2020

Jan shares her experience tutoring her learner, Bao: A quote from Winston Churchill sums up my experience with my adult learner, Bao – “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”

As a former teacher and administrator, I have found that a student’s attitude is an important determiner of future success. From our first meeting three months ago, it was evident that Bao was a determined and committed learner. Her desire to strengthen her communication skills, both in writing and speaking, has guided our weekly learning sessions.

To achieve these goals, we have discussed current events, increased knowledge of content vocabulary and integrated writing skills through the reading of a weekly newsletter, “News for You.” In addition, we are enjoying reading a novel that supports Bao’s comprehension, vocabulary, writing and reading fluency. Connecting her prior knowledge and life experiences with her learning goals has allowed her to make great strides towards the achievement of her goals.

The Placentia Library’s adult literacy program has allowed me to re-connect with my passion for teaching and share my experience with an enthusiastic and dedicated adult.

Azusa Library :: The Dream Of Citizenship Is Alive And Well

The Dream Of Citizenship Is Alive And Well At Azusa Library
SGV Tribune: 11.21.2019 by Anissa Rivera

For Miguel Requelme, 34, of Covina, action is hope.

Born in Mexico, and brought to America at age 3, he grew up grateful that his parents sacrificed so much to give him a better life. Requelme graduated from Wilson High School in Long Beach in 2003, married in 2005 and is the proud father of two daughters. He worked his way up in the fast food industry and is now a general manager.

“As a naturalized citizen, I am looking forward to starting my own business this upcoming year,” Requelme said.

But first, he made time to celebrate Azusa’s newest crop of American citizens. Requelme, after all, is himself a graduate of the Inspired Citizenship program at Azusa City Library.

Arlene Calderon, adult literacy program coordinator at Azusa City Library, invited Requelme to speak to 33 newly-minted Americans at a Nov. 9 celebration.  READ MORE >>
