Huntington Beach Library ◯ Literacy Autumn Newsletter

Autumn 2019 Newsletter

Throughout the 2019 summer we held many classes and workshops, including a June 5 Grammar Sleuth class, which broke down and built back up sentences with diagramming exercises, and most recently a "Writing Workshop" to teach tutors how to help their learners to love to write. We also have ongoing Citizenship Classes at both tutoring sites (Oak View and Central libraries).

On October 12, 2019, Literacy Volunteers partnered with Dyslexia Voice, for their "Dyslexia Awareness and Education Event".  An estimated 70 to 80% of people with poor reading skills are likely dyslexic; and 5 to 15% of children and adults in the U.S. have dyslexia, so teaming with Dyslexia Voice was a natural fit. There was a tremendous line-up of speakers in the theater, an area for exhibitors, a breakout area for light snacks and drinks, and a crafts room for children. So much information was shared, so many voices spoke for this important cause, and all who attended made the day a success.  READ MORE >>

Test Your Health Knowledge: FLC’s New Quiz App Aims to Improve Health Literacy

Test Your Health Knowledge: FLC’s New Quiz App Aims to Improve Health Literacy
FLC Blog: 10.15.2019 by Heather Surrency

FLC has released the new Staying Healthy Quiz app, a fun and interactive learning opportunity to help adult learners build health knowledge and vocabulary. Based on the popular Staying Healthy curriculum, users can choose from three different quiz levels: easy, hard, or a mix of questions from both levels. Educators can use the app as a standalone learning tool or in conjunction with classroom lectures or reviews. Instructors can keep track of student scores and even set up friendly score competitions.

There is a growing recognition that limited English language and literacy skills can have a significant impact on one’s health. People who lack health literacy skills are much more likely to take medications incorrectly, be hospitalized and spend more time in the hospital than people with higher health literacy, and are four times more likely to have poor health. The potential for financial savings and increased health outcomes as a result of healthy literacy skill improvements are significant. Adult education, literacy, and family literacy programs play an important role in helping people to acquire these skills.

“This interactive quiz is an entertaining way to gain knowledge about topics vital to health and well-being,” says Greg Smith, executive director of the Florida Literacy Coalition. “In order to make good choices, people need access to high quality information written in an easy-to-understand format.”

The app is available for download on Android devices on the Google Play Store. This app is available thanks to a grant from the Florida Department of Education, Division of Career and Adult Education. Thanks to the instructors and students of the New College of Florida for their generous donation of technical assistance.  READ MORE >>

Hemet Library ◯ Gives Adults Reading, Life Skill

Hemet Literacy Program

Gives Adults Reading, Life Skills
PE: 12.20.2019 by Diane A Rhoades

As Christmas Day nears and people get ready to give and get cherished gifts, students in the Hemet Adult Literacy Program already have celebrated.

A Saturday, Dec. 14, holiday luncheon brought them together to share their stories. Looking forward to the lifelong gift of reading, each is thankful for a program that is helping them reach their goals.

Lea Ashworth started as a volunteer tutor in 2003 but soon became a Families for Literacy coordinator and is now the adult literacy coordinator.

“I have always had a huge love of reading and I am passionate about wanting to share that with others,” she said. “I want to help our adult learners with their reading and writing skills so they can have a better quality of life.”

Some want to search the internet, be able to follow a recipe, help children with homework or read a story to them, interact with their child’s school or teacher, be able to read and understand a rental agreement or help others by reading a medicine label. The program has 90 adult learners and 20 tutors.

The program, which began in 1985, is paid for by a grant from the California State Library with contributions from the city of Hemet. Free to adult learners, it is offered as a service of the Hemet Public Library, where it is located.  READ MORE >>
