READ
Adult Literacy Program
The READ
program is still active, we are regrouping and adapting.
Tutoring partners are not meeting in person at this
time. Many tutors are meeting with their adult students via telephone and
conferencing programs. Tutors still have access to all the familiar
materials and they are delivered to your local library to be picked up with
your ‘hold’ books during walk-up pick-up.
In addition, office staff are working remotely assembling
a selection of new digital materials for learners at every level.
A new series of Tutor Training classes will be scheduled on ZOOM later this fall.
Interested volunteers are encouraged to call the READ
office at 805-677-7159 and leave a message.

Citizenship Specialist Speaks About Our
Inspired Citizenship Program Now Being Virtual
According to the U.S. Census, nearly
1-third of Azusa residents were born outside the United States. The goal of our
Inspired Citizenship program is to empower our community and encourage stronger
civic participation for all City of Azusa residents. The immigrant community
often faces barriers to citizenship, due to low or interrupted education levels
and limited English proficiency.
Created by the Azusa City
Library, Inspired Citizenship is a program to help adults prepare to become
United States citizens. The library offers:
weekly classes
study materials
1-on-1 coaching
special information workshops to help you and your family achieve your dreams of becoming U.S. citizens
Due to COVID-19, our weekly classes have
transitioned into a virtual service. The Azusa City Library is now offering
Citizenship Classes through Zoom on the following days:
Tuesdays: 9 am (English/ Bilingual)
Wednesdays: 9 am (Spanish)
To request more information, please contact Joyce Ayala at (626) 812-5273
The Adult Literacy program has developed
a podcast of quick, insights into our tutor programs. The following episodes
are of volunteer tutors and learners from the different programs we offer.
The Adult Literacy program offers four
programs our Adult Basic Literacy program, Grassroots ESL, Leamos and Inspired
Citizenship. If you would like to become a volunteer or are in need of our
services please contact Arlene Calderon acalderon@azusaca.gov or call
626-812-5266.

Public Libraries Launches Back-to-School Events To Support Distance Learning
With school looking different this year, OC Public
Libraries’ literacy program, OC READ /
Families for Literacy (OC READ), will be launching a series of
Back-to-School events to support distance learning.
“The County understands the need for literacy and family
engagement are important in building a foundation for learning,” said
Chairwoman Michelle Steel, Second District Supervisor. “The goal of the
Back-to-School events is to help support the community and encourage a culture
of reading and learning for the entire family.”
OC READ offers literacy assistance to adults and their
families, and the Back-to-School events are aimed to promote literacy and help
create “home libraries” to support student learning.
“Distance learning has been challenging for many parents
and students,” said Vice Chairman Andrew Do, First District Supervisor. “Now
more than ever, it is important that we provide essential support services to
our communities through our local county libraries.”
The Back-to-School events will take place from 4 p.m. to
6 p.m. in the parking lot at the following library locations and dates:
Westminster Library: Tuesday, September 22
La Palma Library: Wednesday, September 23
Stanton Library: Thursday, September 24
Garden Grove Main Library: Tuesday, September 29
Garden Grove Chapman Library: Wednesday, September 30
La Habra Library: Thursday, October 1
“These Back-to-School events are part of the creative
community outreach efforts OC Public Libraries is initiating to ensure they
stay connected with their users,” said Supervisor Donald Wagner, Third
District.
The Back-to-School events will include free books and
crafts provided by OC Public Libraries staff to families while they remain
safely in their vehicles. READ
