Corona Library - CNN Hero John Zickefoose (Mr. Z) will speak at the LDA Adult Luncheon

CNN Hero John Zickefoose (Mr. Z) will speak at the LDA Adult Luncheon
“Yes You Can"

Mr.Z is a natural storyteller and delights in bringing books to young readers. But that was not always the case. There was a time when reading the simple words of a picture book would have proved impossible for Mr. Z. He spent years in school overwhelmed with sadness that nothing came as easily to him as it did for others. He would become rowdy, preferring to be kicked out of class than to be called on by the teacher.

He was functionally illiterate, unable to read a prescription label, his children’s report cards or a menu. He was diagnosed as a young boy with dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity. For more than 30 years, Mr. Z was illiterate, barely capable of writing or reading his own name. He managed to graduate from high school, but he admits that he could only read a few words on his diploma.

His second grade son began asking him for homework help that he could not provide. At his wife’s suggestion, Mr. Z contacted the Corona Public Library and began literacy classes. Empowered by his new reading skills, Mr. Z has become an advocate for the struggling youth and adults in our society, drawing upon his own experiences in learning how to read and succeed in life. He has appeared on ABC, NBC, CNN and PBS. He has also given numerous radio interviews.

Book Giving Day: February 14

Book Giving Day: February 14

A day dedicated to getting new, used and borrowed books in the hands of as many children as possible.

Three simple ways to celebrate International Book Giving Day!

1. Give a Book to a Friend or Relative.
Celebrate International Book Giving Day by giving a child a new, used or borrowed book.

2. Leave a Book in a Waiting Room or Lobby.
Choose a waiting room where kids are stuck waiting and there are few to no good books available. Purchase a good book, and deposit your book covertly or overtly in your waiting room of choice. The goal here is to spread the love of reading to kids, so choose a fun book, nothing controversial.

3. Donate a Book.
Wrap up a box of children’s books that your kids have outgrown and get them in the hands of children who could really use a book or two. Donate your books to your local second hand store, library, children’s hospital, or shelter. Alternatively, donate your books to an organization working internationally to get books in the hands of kids, such as Books for Africa.

How will you celebrate International Book Giving Day?

World Read Aloud Day March 5th :: Reading is like _______ .

World Read Aloud Day
March 5th.

Fill in the Blank @litworldsays Feb 11
Reading is like ___________.
and Tweet !

According to Pam Allyn, "Reading is like breathing in and writing is like breathing out, and storytelling is what links both: it is the soul of literacy. The most powerful tool that we have to strengthen literacy is often the most underused and overlooked, and that is a child's own stories"

Pam Allyn is a children's rights activist and Executive Director and founder of LitWorld, a global non-profit organization advocating for children’s rights as readers, writers, and learners.

Literacy is the foundation for emotional and physical well-being, intellectual growth, and economic security. The right to read and write is a fundamental human right and belongs to all people.

Worldwide at least 793 million people remain illiterate. Two-thirds of them are women. All over the world, children are hungry for learning and for the power it brings. Research shows that children learn to read and write best by writing and telling the stories of their own experiences. Yet it is rare to find safe spaces where children feel fully comfortable to do so.

California State Library's Grand Reopening: Feb 11-14

Celebrate California State Library's Grand Reopening Week
Feb 11 - 14

The California State Library has returned to the newly restored Stanley Mosk Library and Courts Building after four years of extensive renovations and we'd like you to come and visit us. The building, a remarkable example of Neo-classical architecture located at 914 Capitol Mall, has been fully restored to its original beauty.

Help us celebrate our move back to this historic building February 11–14, 2014. We have put together a series of special events, exhibits and presentations for this week of celebration. The festivities begin Tuesday, February 11, and continue throughout the week.

We have a series of events that you might want to check out in the Library Meeting Room on the fifth floor. There will also be exhibits in Gillis Hall, the main reading room on the third floor; the Circulation Room also on the third floor; and other locations throughout the library. You can also go on a tour.
Tours will begin Tuesday, February 11, at 11 a.m. and will continue until 3:30 p.m. Beginning Wednesday, February 12, tours will be conducted at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. weekdays only. You can schedule a tour online on our website.

The presentations in the Library Meeting Room, Room 500 will be held Wednesday-Friday, February 12-14, from 9:30 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. Among the topics presented will be a look at how the government has used comics to get their message out; a fascinating collection of political memorabilia including buttons, ballots and posters; the seemingly incongruous relationship between government documents and love; plus a host of other topics. Libraries - Share What You Know About Adult Literacy

TimetoReskill Slide Show

Share What You Know About Adult Literacy:

Libraries Invited to Provide Input
UpNext: The IMLS Blog: 1.23.2014 by mheintz
A Joint OVAE-IMLS UpNext Blog Post

Results from the latest international study of adult skills, Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) Survey of Adult Skills, show that the U.S. workforce trails many other developed nations in foundational skills essential for both individuals and the nation as a whole to thrive. These skills include the ability to read, the ability to understand numbers and do math, and the ability to solve problems using technology.

The site’s many resources include:
-A consultation paper, a 10-page paper that can be shared in advance of an event to provide background on the skills issue and the framework for the National Action Plan
-A toolkit, a step-by-step guide to running a local roundtable from types of people to invite to what questions to pose
-An online feedback form (Submit comments by March 14 to be considered in the Plan.)

Learn more about the results of the study by reading Time for the U.S. to Reskill? What the Survey of Adult Skills Says, a report completed by OECD at the request of the U.S. Department of Education.

Libraries play an important role in boosting adults’ foundational skills and they have the ability to offer important insights that can help shape the national action plan. Libraries can take part by hosting roundtable discussion to provide input on the plan.

National Literacy Action Week (NLAW) January 27 – February 1

January 27 – February 1

NLAW is a Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education [SCALE] initiative for strengthening literacy activism. During the week, campus literacy programs nationwide join together to raise awareness about literacy and create change on their campuses and in their communities.

To raise awareness:
- Help people understand the need for literacy services locally or nationally.
- Inform your community about the importance of having adequate literacy skills, and what it means for those who do not.
- Raise awareness about your program’s activities and the essential work you do.
- Make connections between literacy and other social justice issues by demonstrating the very real relationships operating in society (e.g., literacy and racism, poverty, sexism, immigration, health needs).

To make change:
- Address a social justice issue in your local community or on campus.
- Advocate for changes in a local school.
- Lobby local, state or national elected officials to commit more resources for literacy initiatives.
- Pressure decision-makers in education (or other human service areas) to embrace policies and practices that benefit learners most and lead to greater justice and equality.

Huntington Beach Library - Family Literacy - For library duo, work is not about books

For library duo, work is not about books
Orange County Register: 1.09.2014 by Annie Zak

When Amy Crepeau started working at the Oak View branch of the Huntington Beach Public Library, she didn't even speak the same language as most of the residents in the neighborhood.

As she began learning Spanish, library patrons sometimes would laugh with her about her mistakes, but then they would correct her, eventually helping lead Crepeau to fluency.

Crepeau's experience in learning another language mirrors how she helps residents in the Oak View neighborhood learn English through her position as coordinator of the Family Literacy Program.

She and the library's branch manager, Claudia Locke, have been working together at the Oak View library for nearly 20 years. As a result, the library has become not just a place for checking out books, but the center of the Oak View community.

The two women, along with a fleet of volunteers, help teach English to adults and families, coordinate community events at the library and host reading programs and homework clubs, among other things.  READ MORE !

Redlands Library - Pair team up to quarterback Redlands Adult Literacy Program

Pair team up to quarterback Redlands Adult Literacy Program
Redlands Daily Facts: 12.28.2013 by Kristina Hernandez

With the need for literacy tutors growing in the city, two women have dedicated a countless number of hours to ensure those demands are met.

Trudy Waldron and Katherine Gifford head the Redlands Adult Literacy Program at the A.K. Smiley Public Library, which provides one-on-one tutoring in reading and writing to people age 18 and up.

The group meets weekly at the library and at two other sites with learners they are assigned to in the hopes of tackling any needs their students would like to address, such as writing a greeting card or reading and filling out an employment application.

“So many seeking literacy help as adults have economic problems, and 50 percent of our adult literacy students have school-aged children,” Gifford said.

More than 100 tutors volunteer for the program, but a few years ago that was not the case — plans were being made to dissolve the program due to money issues, Waldron said.

That is when the Friends of the A.K. Smiley Public Library and the duo jumped on board to save it in the hopes of building a bigger and better program.

And that’s just what they have done.  READ MORE !

SCA7: Local Government Financing

SCA7
Local Government Financing: Public Libraries-Voter Approval
Author: Senator Lois Wolk; Coauthors: Senator Mark Leno & Assembly Member Das Williams

SCA7, a state constitutional amendment in the California Senate and Assembly that would change the limit for a successful ballot initiative from the current 66% required to pass down to 55% for approval.

In plain terms, if SCA7 eventually passes and is approved as a statewide Proposition it will be 11% easier to pass a library ballot measure in California.

The first step is to get SCA7 passed in the Senate and General Assembly then signed by the Governor.

It would then become a statewide Proposition and require a simple majority of Californians to approve it. This will have a huge and significant impact on libraries in California.

EveryLibrary is starting with a Letter of Support to the author, Sen Lois Wolk and co-authors, Sen Mark Leno and Assembly Member Das Williams.

And to write letters to the editor of your local newspapers as part of a larger effort to get the word out to the public about the importance of libraries.
