Glendora Library
February  27, 2016 :: 5 pm

The Great Trivia Challenge began in 1992 as a fundraising event to create an Adult Literacy program. Now it is a community-loved tradition that promotes friendly competition to support the Glendora Library. It is an exciting event in which teams, sponsored by local business and service organizations, compete against each other. Mr. Trivia, Thom Hill, asks a series of increasingly difficult trivia questions to determine a winner.

Redlands Library :: Redlands Adult Literacy Program Learners Enter Challenge

Redlands Adult Literacy Program learners enter Challenge
Redlands Daily Facts: 2.20.2016 by Diane Shimota,
Adult Literacy Coordinator-AK Smiley Library

Writing is a core element of the Redlands Adult Literacy Program.

Recently, seven adult learners from the Redlands Adult Literacy Program entered the Writer to Writer Challenge, which is sponsored by the Southern California Library Literacy Network. The annual Writer to Writer Challenge invites adult literacy learners throughout Southern California to write a letter to an author, living or dead, whose book has inspired them.

As Carrie Scott, community outreach supervisor the Carlsbad City Library and chairman of the Writer to Writer Challenge, explained, this activity is a “goal bonanza.” It provides the opportunity for learners to obtain a library card, select a book, check out a book from the library, read the book, write a letter, edit the letter and submit it for review.

Participants can attend a conference with fellow learners and describe their experiences in writing to an author.

Scott said that she loves that “every now and then, we get a letter where a learner writes about reading a book to his or her child.”

One of the Redlands entrants, Crystal Moreno, wrote to Malala Yousafzai, author of “I Am Malala.” Moreno’s goal in the Redlands Adult Literacy Program is to improve her writing. She said she wanted to challenge herself by entering this contest and she found that her writing improved as she worked through several drafts of her letter.

Moreno was able to connect with the author because she also believes in the power of education for women and girls.  READ MORE @

Imperial County Library - Librarian, Barrington, Set to Retire

County Librarian set to retire after 15 years
Imperial Valley Press: 2.11.2016 by Edwin Delgado

After serving Imperial Valley for more than 20 years, the last 15 as the County Librarian, Connie Barrington is now set to retire. The new county librarian will begin on March 4.

“It was hard to make the decision, I really enjoyed it,” Barrington said. “It’s time for someone young with a new vision to continue to expand on what we have.”

Barrington who is from Chicago came into the valley with her husband in the 1980s after he convinced her to come and experience living in the Valley.

She held several positions early in her career, before getting appointed as the county librarian Barrington was an assistant to the director of the Brawley Library where she began to get involved with the Adult Literacy Program in 1989.

“I think that with the budget that we’ve had, we were able to provide great services for the community,” Barrington said. “The library is the best underutilized resource in the Valley.”

Despite always having a limited budget to work with she feels proud to have been able to expand the services they provide the community and adapt with the times. The library is working to allow people to check out eBook readers and have constantly upgraded their software and connections to allow its users to access the resources and information they need with ease.

“People only think of books when it comes to the library but we’re so much more than that,” Barrington said.

Now with retirement looming, she said that a friend of hers adviser her not to commit to anything for the first six months of her retirement. She does intend to do a lot of traveling but also wants to remain involved with the literacy program, although she still doesn’t know to what capacity.  READ MORE @ [Subscription Required]
