Huntington Beach Library :: Online High School Diploma and More !

Online High School Diploma and More!
Open Doors: March 2016
Huntington Beach Public Library Literacy Volunteer

Huntington Beach Public Library is offering qualified community members the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and credentialed career certificate through Career Online High School, a program brought to public libraries by Gale, a part of Cengage Learning.

HBPL will award scholarships for Career Online High School to qualified learners looking to earn a high school diploma and advance their careers. Classes are supported by board-certified instructors; students have 24/7 access to the online learning platform, along with an academic coach. Coursework begins in one of eight high-growth, high-demand career fields, before progressing to the core academic subjects. Many students are able to graduate in as few as 4 to 6 months by transferring in previously earned high school credits, with a maximum completion of 18 months.

Huntington Beach residents can learn more about Career Online High School in the HBPL Literacy Office or by selecting Career Online High School from the library's web page.

This pilot program is managed by Literacy Volunteers-HBPL, sponsored by the Huntington Beach Public Library, and funded by California State Library and the Friends of HB Library.  READ MORE @

A newsletter written by students and tutors

Congratulations Are in Order Congratulations to Leonard Utley, winner for his letter to Tom Gilroy, author of In Bikole: Eight Modern Stories of Life in a West African Village, and to Hyun Mi Kim, runner-up for her letter to Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl.

The Writer to Writer Challenge is an annual competition for adult learners in public library literacy programs. Learners write a letter to an author of a book or magazine telling them how their lives were influenced by what they read.

The competition is sponsored by the Southern California Library Literacy Network (SCLLN), and the winners and runners-up were recognized at an awards ceremony on March 5 during the SCLLN conference. Winners in each category had an opportunity to read their letters during the ceremony, and all winners and runners-up received a copy of a book that has been published with their letters.  READ MORE @

Altadena Library :: Bob Lucas Memorial Branch

Bob Lucas Memorial Branch
CONNECT: April 2016

The Bob Lucas MemorialBranch Library and Literacy Center has been serving the West Altadena neighborhood since its opening in 1957 (and reopening in 1991 after being closed for 13 years due to Prop 13 budget cuts).

Our history is a rich one with the establishment of the adult literacy program, Let’s Read Altadena in 1990 at the Branch. The literacy program is one of few in the region with the next closest one being in Glendale. The literacy program has provided volunteer opportunities for community members as tutors and has helped many adults improve their reading and writing skills over the years.

In addition, the literacy program offers free ESL classes to students and free one-on-one tutoring for adults. Train to be a tutor on-line at your own pace and when it is convenient for you. Call 626-798-8338 for more information.

In addition to our literacy programs we offer craft programs, movies, and games for children. We offer fun flick fridays showings of popular newly released children movies once a month. Throughout the year we also run reading programs such as our Winter Reading Program that encourages kids to read books, complete book reports and earn prizes. Other activities we offer are DIY inspirations Stations such as the “make your own Valentine card” station and game days. We also have an exciting line up of performers for this year’s summer reading program. Whether it be books, crafts, tutors, classes, community information, research help, study space, computer access, scanning, copying, printing, or up-to-date DVDs, we have something for everyone at our library!
