Huntington Beach Library :: International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day
Open Doors: September 2016

International Literacy Day (ILD) shines a spotlight on global literacy needs, which goes hand in hand with the International Literacy Association's mission: literacy for everyone, everywhere. ILA advocates for a literate world, supports literacy educators and leaders, and celebrates the power of literacy. Founded as the International Reading Association, the International Literacy Association (ILA) has worked to enhance literacy instruction through research and professional development for 60 years. Some of its advances made for literacy include:

• Honing the skills of thousands of literacy educators through our practical research journals, publications, professional development, conferences, and advocacy efforts
• Publishing over 900 books on issues in literacy education
• Developing and managing dozens of global literacy projects across the developing world
• Building a community of educators through our network of councils and affiliate groups
• Advocating before legislative and regulatory bodies for resources to enhance students' skills
• Setting standards for educators and assessment that are now used throughout the field
• Co-producing ReadWriteThink -a widely used website resource for peer reviewed lesson plans

As the champion of a vibrant literacy community, we recognize the importance of working together to drive sustainable change and have great expectations for the next 60 years-and beyond.

Together, we are the future of literacy, and the future is now.

Redlands Library :: How to volunteer with Redlands Adult Literacy Program

How to volunteer with Redlands Adult Literacy Program
Redlands Daily Facts: 8.27.2016 by Diane Shimota, adult literacy coordinator at the A.K. Smiley Public Library in Redlands.

Do you have a passion for reading or writing? Would you like to help someone learn to read?

The Redlands Adult Literacy Program provides an opportunity for you to pursue your passion with a purpose by becoming an adult literacy tutor. Volunteer tutors are the foundation of the Adult Literacy Program because they donate their time to support learners in their quest for reading and writing competency.

Let me introduce you to a few of these wonderful volunteers.

Martha Kennedy, a retired teacher from Redlands High School, has tutored with the Redlands Adult Literacy Program for five years. Kennedy, with Sharon Regalado, leads the off-site adult literacy program at Lugonia Elementary School where six tutors meet one-on-one with their adult learners each week.

Riverside County Library :: To Increase Literacy Among Nonliterate Latino Adults

Riverside County Library System to Increase Literacy Among Nonliterate Latino Adults

The Literacy Headquarters, located at the Louis Robidoux Library, has been selected as one of five libraries across California to pilot LeamosTM (Let’s Read) @ the Library.  Centro Latino for Literacy (Centro Latino), a nonprofit organization headquartered in Los Angeles, launched the project to bring its online literacy course to the state’s non-literate Spanish speakers, which number 573,866 (2009-2011 ACS, PERE pooled file).  The two-year pilot project is supported by a grant awarded by the James Irvine Foundation to Centro Latino to explore partnerships with public libraries. Greg Lucas, California State Librarian said, “In a state which in 2014 gained a Latino plurality, it seems at a minimum good common sense to encourage programs like Leamos™.  Without literacy skills in their native language, proficiency in English becomes significantly harder, if not impossible to attain.”

Public libraries will incorporate the use of Leamos™ as an effective strategy to both promote reading at its most basic level and to effectively outreach to Spanish-speakers in their communities. “Public libraries are a natural ally in fulfilling our mission of creating innovative solutions that transform lives through literacy.  Leamos™ @ the Library is the portal for nonliterate Spanish speakers to close both the basic and digital literacy gaps and to increase civic engagement,” stated Mari Riddle, Centro Latino President and CEO.  “Learning to read and write is ground zero. Many students have described learning to read and write as being able to see after a lifetime of being blind – ‘Ya tengo ojos (Now I have eyes)’”.  READ MORE @
