Ask Your Representative to Join the Adult Literacy Caucus :: NCL

Ask Your Representative to Join the Adult Literacy Caucus

The Adult Literacy Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives has been re-certified for the 115th Congress. Rep. Phil Roe (R-TN) will continue as caucus sponsor and Republican co-chair. Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY) has agreed to serve as Democratic co-chair, taking the place of Rep. RubĂ©n Hinojosa, who retired last year. Two weeks ago, the offices of Rep. Roe and Rep. Yarmuth distributed a “Dear Colleague” letter, inviting all members of the House to join the Caucus.

The current members of the Caucus are listed here. If your representative is not on the list, we hope you’ll consider asking them to join. (Feel free to reference the Dear Colleague letter when contacting them.)  Be prepared with a concise message that includes your name, your address (to show you’re a constituent), contact information, and what you are calling/writing about (joining the Adult Literacy Caucus).

Orange Public Library :: Volunteer Literacy Tutors Needed

Volunteer Literacy Tutors Needed
City of Orange: 2.07.2017

Did you know the library has a new adult literacy program? We are recruiting volunteers to be tutors, and if you are reading this, you just might be one of them.

Last year, library literacy programs in Southern California helped thousands of adults improve reading and writing skills.

In 2016, we received funds from the California State Library, North Orange Rotary Club, City of Orange Public Library Foundation, Friends of the Orange Public Library, and the Community Foundation of Orange, to establish an adult literacy program in the City of Orange.

Our program is available to English-speaking adults.  Those who cannot speak and understand English are referred to local programs to learn conversation first, then they may enroll in our reading and writing program.

A person seeking help with reading is given an assessment and then matched with a volunteer tutor.  Materials are provided for each tutor-student pair.

Additional books, worksheets, and computer-aided instruction are provided through the Literacy Office.

Tutor Training Class

Happy New Year :: Carlsbad Library Literacy Services :: Samsung Tablets

Happy New Year :: Carlsbad Library Literacy Services

As the new year begins we would like to give you more information about the tablets in the tutoring rooms.  There are instructions in the room: “How to Use the Library’s Samsung Tablets.”  These go through how to use the tablets step-by-step, from turning them on to the different apps available.  There are three apps we would like to highlight for you.  The first is the “US Citizenship” app.  It uses flashcards and practice tests to help improve skills for the citizenship test.  The second app is “Sight Words Wiz.”  This app has different levels of sight words that are read out loud to the learner who then chooses the correct word from a list.  The last app is “The Oxford English Dictionary” which is a great tool for looking up definitions.  No matter what apps you use, the tablets are a great resource to try.  If you need any help, or have suggestions on apps to add, please let a staff member know.
