Santa Monica Library :: Literacy at the Library

Literacy at the Library
Santa Monica Daily Press: 3.18.2017 by Nancy Bender

310-458-8646
If you only visit the Library to check-out books or DVDs, you’re missing a huge part of what Santa Monica Public Library has to offer. Did you know that there is a Library program going on, at one or more of our locations, pretty much every day of the year? In 2016 the Library presented over 1,900 programs that drew over 65,800 participants. We have programs of all types – book discussions, crafts, computer classes, author talks, film screenings, concerts – and for all ages.

While some of these programs are totally, completely, unabashedly for fun – how about a screening of The Secret Life of Pets, anyone? – many are educational in nature and, of those, some speak specifically to learning skills that advance one’s literacy, or “competence or knowledge in a specified area.” Our programs include everything from Story Times for babies and children to computer classes for adults; all with the goal of boosting literacy.

This year, the Santa Monica Public Library (SMPL) expands its educational offerings by launching a new Adult Literacy Program, made possible by a California Library Literacy Grant. The program features volunteer adult literacy tutors working one-on-one with adult learners, helping them learn or improve their reading and writing skills. This new program is part of a larger umbrella of learning programming at the Library.

CLA 2017 Day In The District :: SCA 3-Dodd :: State Budget

CLA 2017 Day in the District
CLA: March 2017

What is “Day in the District?”

“Day in the District” is an effective way to build relationships with your legislator(s) by concentrating your time with the legislator in his or her district office, rather than at the busy State Capitol. Developing relationships with new legislators and bolstering your relationship with continuing legislators is incredibly important for the success of CLA’s advocacy platform.

Library directors, staff, Friends groups and trustees, literacy advocates, and other supporters are encouraged to schedule appointments with their legislators during the month of March.

Advocacy Issue: SCA 3-Dodd (library construction bonds – 55% vote approval)
Senator Bill Dodd (D-Napa) has introduced SCA 3, which seeks to lower the local voter threshold for library construction bonds from the current two-thirds vote to a 55% vote. CLA is the official sponsor of SCA 3 and we will be actively working to secure passage of the legislation in the legislature.

Advocacy Issue: State Budget
The Governor’s 2017-18 State Budget does not include any new increases for library funding. Due to the Governor’s concerns over a future economic downturn, as well as the uncertainty surrounding federal Budget issues, the Governor released a prudent Budget in January, which “holds the line” on current library funding.

Due to term limits, many of the “library champions” for CLA have recently departed the legislature. CLA is looking for the next generation of “library champions” in the California State Senate and Assembly. Could your legislator be our next library leader?

Ventura Co Library :: Read to a Child and Support Adult Literacy

Editorial: Read to a child and support adult literacy

Thursday is our national day to promote and celebrate reading. In classrooms across our county and nation, teachers, parents and other guests will be reading to children as part of Read Across America Day.

This annual event created by the National Education Association in 1998 and held on and around the birthday of the late Theodor Seuss Geisel — Dr. Seuss — offers everyone a wonderful chance to get involved in their local schools and support education and literacy.

Literacy, however, is not just an issue for children. About 18 percent of adults 16 to 65 years old in the United States struggle with basic reading and comprehension, according to the U.S. Department of Education. So today is also a good day to applaud a local program that has been working to improve adult literacy in Ventura County for more than three decades.

The Ventura County library system’s READ Adult Literacy Program — featured in a Star story last week — has been offering free help with reading and writing for English-speaking adults since 1984. It trains volunteers to provide weekly, one-on-one reading and writing tutoring for adults, with sessions held at libraries, schools, jails and other facilities throughout the county.  READ MORE @

Carlsbad Library :: How to Use the Library's Tablets

Happy New Year :: Carlsbad Library Literacy

As the new year begins we would like to give you more information about the tablets in the tutoring rooms.

There are instructions in the room: “How to Use the Library’s Samsung Tablets.”  These go through how to use the tablets step-by-step, from turning them on to the different apps available.

There are three apps we would like to highlight for you.  The first is the “US Citizenship” app.  It uses flashcards and practice tests to help improve skills for the citizenship test.

The second app is “Sight Words Wiz.”  This app has different levels of sight words that are read out loud to the learner who then chooses the correct word from a list.

The last app is “The Oxford English Dictionary” which is a great tool for looking up definitions.  No matter what apps you use, the tablets are a great resource to try.  If you need any help, or have suggestions on apps to add, please let a staff member know.  READ MORE @
