California Library Association :: 2018 Outstanding Librarian in Support of Literacy Award

Outstanding Librarian in Support of Literacy Award

CLA's Outstanding Librarian in Support of Literacy Award recognizes a librarian who has demonstrated passion, excellence and dedication in support of adult literacy.

Two awards will be given out in 2018. The Outstanding Librarian in Support of Literacy Award recipients will each receive $1,000 and will be honored at the CLA annual conference.



The 2018 award nomination period will close on
Friday, March 30, 2018 at 5:00pm.

Eligibility
➤The nominee can be a library staff member who has performed one or more of the following services in support of literacy: outreach, programming, advocacy, recruitment, public awareness, collection development, fundraising, other -- you name it!
➤The nominee cannot be a literacy services staff person who already provides direct literacy services.
➤Persons nominated for the award are required to be CLA members.
➤Nominators are not required to be CLA members. However, if a nomination is made by a non-member, the nomination must be endorsed by a CLA member. If you need assistance in finding a CLA member to endorse your nomination, please contact the CLA office no later than two weeks prior to the deadline.
➤Only one nomination per library jurisdiction is permitted.
➤The OLSL Award is an individual award and a nomination may not be made for a group.

How to nominate
➤Nominators should submit the following to CLA:
➤A brief description of what the nominee has done to demonstrate passion, excellence, and dedication on behalf of literacy. (Not to exceed 300 words.)
➤Information about the nominee's library background and what the nominee's outstanding qualities are. E.g., how long has s/he worked in libraries and what has been the nature of that work? (Not to exceed 150 words.)
➤Anything else the committee should know about the nominee. (Not to exceed 150 words.)

The California Center for the Book is a recipient of a local Library of Congress Literacy Award for use in supporting state literacy initiatives. Through the generosity of David M. Rubenstein, the Library of Congress Literacy Awards program furthers the Library's mission by honoring organizations that have made outstanding contributions to increasing literacy in the United States or abroad. The awards also encourage the continuing development of innovative methods for promoting literacy and the wide dissemination of the most effective practices. They are intended to draw public attention to the importance of literacy, and the need to promote literacy and encourage reading.

NCFL seeks adult learners to share their learning stories

The National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) invites adult learners to apply to be a speaker at the 2018 Families Learning Conference, held from September 24 to 26, 2018, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.


Each year during our Conference, students share their learning stories with attendees during General Sessions (a time when all attendees are gathered together at once). Having students share their stories of determination, hard work, and achievement inspires us all.

By speaking, student speakers receive

A free round-trip flight to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from September 23 to 26, 2018

Three free nights at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa

A free registration to attend all Families Learning Conference sessions and events

Free meals from September 23 to 26, 2018

A professional photo taken of their family in advance of the Conference

The opportunity to share their unique story with an audience of hundreds of attendees from around the country

The opportunity to raise awareness of their school or program to a national audience

A DVD recording of their speech

Free time to enjoy the beach and pool


We ask student speakers to:
• Submit a draft of their speech to NCFL in advance of the Conference
• Work with NCFL staff to revise their speech as necessary
• Attend a rehearsal on September 23 to practice speaking onstage
• Make the most of their trip by attending Conference sessions and events

Speech guidelines:
• Speech should be approximately 1500 words
• Speech should take about 8 minutes to read
• Tell the story of your learning journey, including what your life was like before you began attending a learning program and how your life is different now
• Incorporate a Thank You message to the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) and program sponsors

Tips to Improve Reading by Using the Internet

1. Find websites that offer visual and auditory support: Not everyone learns the same way. Many may learn through seeing visuals or listening to audio. Find websites that offer these kinds of activities. This way, you get to see and hear vocabulary in a way that will help you understand better.

2. Get into the habit of reading out loud: When you read online, make sure you are not doing so silently, so that you can hear yourself saying the words aloud. This helps with pronunciation and your memorization of the word.

3. Try different links: NaturalReader, TextAloudMp3, and StoryPlace are a few of the websites that can help your reading improve. These links can help you download books on tape, download news and weather, activities and reading lists. All these links help you listen to how vocabulary is properly said and helps you gain a better understanding of what you read.

4. Quizzes: Through the use of grammar and vocabulary skills and understanding, a variety of websites may offer quizzes and games that enhance the skills.

5. Exposure: Remember new vocabulary words must be practiced often and the more you come across new words, the better your reading will become. Website resources also include help with misspelled words, grammar, and provide puzzles and games for ESL students and native English speakers wishing to improve their comprehension, reading skills, and written language skills.

We will match you with an adult learner who is available when you are.

Attend an individual tutor training for specific information about your learner and the materials you will use with your learner.

Meet at the library with your learner one or two times a week for about 1½ hours each session.
